I have one too...the straight 8 engines were so long you had to work on them from the sides...when buick went to a v-8 they changed the way the hood opens. mines a two door
@antnys53myers - re: hood opening from either side - now I know why Buicks had side opening hoods - in order to service its straight 8 engines. Buicks from the 40's and 50's are my favorite cars.

Beautiful car. I have a 1951 Caddy, similar style, but your car is in much better shape. Is that standard, how the hood opens.
