@tcradical I agree to a point. Great Carmen. But she sacrifices a lot of her voice to add character. I think there should be balance. She wouldn't have to gasp so much for air if she sang a little more evenly.
@nalib11 Do you think? Maybe she is "gasping" because of excitement, maybe she enjoys doing this character very much. I get it, you think she should tone down the acting a little bit so her singing woud be better, but I do not think she is "gasping" because she is paying so much attention to the acting to the point that it is affecting her singing, I respect your opinion though.
@nalib11 mmm. i see that. its possible that she does it intentionally sometimes, but before every phrase? her neck flexes and all too often her tone goes straight. natural vibrato comes from just enough antagonism of musculature in the body. singers need pharyngeal space and an open rib cage to breath effectively and to resonate at both higher decibels and frequencies. the problem is most telling as she ascends into her upper register and pops up. most of her performances are similar cases.
es tan hermosa que le perdono el agudo final...

Anna Sofie rules!! A wonderfully talented artist at our time.

I agree—Anne Sofie von Otter tops all others as Carmen.

She is even better than Garanca, she is more of an artist. I wish she had been the Carmen for the last Met production with Garanca.
