  • you can light the cotton balls with a flint and steel as well :)

  • Whats in the orange tin? plz people

  • @FAWKORZOME Palmaid, it's for hair. When I was an Eagle scout in the Boy Scouts, we used petroleum jelly and cotton balls.

  • @FAWKORZOME some sort of fat i think, for waterprofing boots or something like that.

  • @immasurvivor Did you even watch the video?

  • for a compass spend the coin and don't go cheap... I always recommend the Silva Ranger. works at night, can set your declination. you can use the mirror to signal... has the two most common scales for distance. fluid filled so its smooth and wont stick....its go a lot of bang for your buck.

  • why is a wooden handle better than metal?

  • @mercenaryrebel beacouse if the handle brakes you can replace it in the bush quick:)

  • I use 5000 degree engine paint from the discount auto store. I find that the BBQ High Temp paint does not hold up so well.

  • lol he has a star wars tattoo on his right hand

  • Dave, enjoying this series so far. Noticed you were looking at Neosporin, presumably for your med kit. Have you ever considered adding Crazy or Super Glue to the kit for small cuts etc.? I've found that using either is a good way to close a cut or cover abrasions.

Kind of like a liquid bandage, but for much less the cost. A small tube takes little space, stops the bleeding, disinfects the wound, and it's painless. I may be mistaken, but it seems to speed up the healing process also.

  • Dave, what is the temp on the spray paint that you used in the video?

  • Dave I have been instructing my local cadets in bushcraft and self relience teniques for years now and and i have to say that you are probably the most NO bullshit wilderness instructor i know of. keep it simple and keep up the good work.

  • Wouldn't the steel handled axe be more reliable? As in, the handle won't break? Is the steel better on the mexican one? Maybe I missed it in the video.

  • I found a good compas on the net with the mirror for 5€.

  • Great video. Just a tip about the penny, it may be better to use older ones from before the 80's. Older cents are made of solid copper as opposed to the zinc ones made today and may stand up better in an outdoor enviornment

  • Nice video! Great info.

  • dave you have an insane speaking voice. whatever you say seems to just stick . i hear your voice in my head when i watch action movies and stuff in the wilderness when people do the wrong thing. or when i read what you type. your an amazing teacher. i cant wait to get out and take a class with you.

  • nice

  • Hay Dave me and my kids watch your videos quite a bit and now I have figured out a way to use your vids in conjunction with there home schooling. We've been wondering when your going to stop shooting videos and why?? Thanks Dave

  • @71wicker Because of his contract with Dual Survival he isn't allowed to put out videos as often as in the past. He still has some new ones from time to time, but he's heavily limited by his contract. Also as busy as he is with the show he's unable to do as much as he used to. I recommend you check out his virtual classroom on his website, it has TONS of great videos.

  • Dave,

Do you still suggest painting the outside of the stainless first?

  • if you wanted to you could make a nise lantern for the price of a caned soft drink a candle and some string

  • I am really wondering why you would not prefer 250 Lb. test bank-line for use as snares ? !

Seems like bank-line would be stronger, more versatile, more agile/dextrous and would be way less bulky ... so ... why not just go with bank-line ? I am starting to like bank-line even for most of the tasks that I used to assign to paracord. I can carry SO much of it and it is way cheap ... 250Lbs is really strong, and it does not stretch or rot (when wet) as paracord does ... right ? ... Dave ?-

    Hmm.

  • i dont know if that penny is 96 pounds capacity .

  • I love how he was trying to get the price tag off that bowl and when he couldn't get it he was like "Up your's. You're gonna get painted"

  • you're awesome dave!

  • he looks really familiar. where have i seen him?

  • @cjcall012 dual survival on discovery channel

  • Dave would you prefer a machete or an axe? Im not sure about an axe but I know I can get a machete for about 7$

  • are u canadian?

  • im probley going to sond like a idot but why spray paint the bowl and water bottle? he might have said it in the vid tho :p

  • @lookingdiffrently Its this type of paint that you put on stainless steel so when you burn it ontop of a wood fire it doasnt "make it sticky" from the resedues in the wood. SOmething like that.

  • please tell us what is the diffrence between the two axe's dose one cut easyer is it like a self sharping axe ? or do you just like the wood handle insted of rubber handle ? on the$ 5.00 axe there is a dent under the cutting edge what is that a bottle opener ? please respond thank you

  • @richardheadIII i know its late but the handle on the metal one is a hollow tube which breaks easily, so he just likes to have a replaceable handle for wooden one

  • I would'nt cheap out on the compass, good video though!!!

  • Dave could be a FEMA and Homeland Security adviser!

  • @MrWatchdawg77 Dave Canterbury for president 2012!!!!! lol

  • I'm glad to see vise grips in a someone's kit. I always thought that they are a great value to a survival kit. I love your video's they have given knowledge and ideas.

  • u say 97 capasity how u know that that penny is strong enough for that

  • @roossi I believe he was referring to the strength of the wiring, not necessarily the penny itself. I don't know this for fact but, I suspect it takes more than 97 pounds of force to bend / break a penny.

  • wet wood becomes dry wood if you cut it down the middle; the center is dry, it catches and boils the water out so the rest is useable

    hurray boyscouts :D

  • Canterbury...this was a lot of fun going shopping with you in these videos and you must have caught my earlier kit because before you did this video I had 90% of the same stuff...however after watching your preferred carry video I upgraded to SRK Carbon V, Alice Back pack, Paracord etc. To kewl!

  • Hey man I really apreciate your work.....apart from always watching your videos , i like the way you explain everything clearly - i think the military experience combined with your education and character came out in the best way they could......your sons and your students must be very proud of you.....thumbs up from me , Dave !!

  • You're awesome man! Keep up the kick ass work!

  • Dude ur awesome, thanks for doing this stuff, really like the dynamic between you and Cody on the show also.

  • watching this, and seeing the spoon and fork, I raided my cutlery drawer, grabbed a table spoon (the large spoons for those not in the know). Clamped them together and drilled a hole through the base of the handles, and threaded a stray shoelace through the holes. Done. Price? free. If you wanted, you could get a fork and spoon from a good will type store for prob. $0.50 total.

  • I dont see how a wood axe is in any way superior to a metal handle axe thats one piece.

  • @Fadsmashers what if the handle breaks with wood handle you can replace it

  • @emocircusops Seriously, to break the metal on a good one you probably ain't using it right! I can see the benefit of the wood though in that respect in addition to the lighter weight but really if you get a good metal axe and use it right you ain't gonna break it

  • @Fadsmashers a good tool should be able to stand up to years of abuse and missuse.you are generaly missuseing an item when you improvise, which is an important bushcrafting skill.in my exsperience wether it is missused or not an axe handle is going to brake.you would be better off being able to replace a handle in the bush wich i have had to do many times.but that may just be my opion,do what you will.that just my imput.

  • @emocircusops It is simply that ...if the handle breaks with a wooden handle axe/hatchet the possibility of manufacturing another handle is possible in the bush. I switched to a Collins wooden axe from a Estwing for just that reason. By the way...that was a Canterbury insight some time ago. Hope that helps.

  • You can also make cheaper snares just by back braiding the wire into a loop, like sailors do making eyelets in ropes. Yes its kind of a pain, but you can do it if you are tring to save money.

  • Dave I a suggestion to keep the cost of your snares down. you can buy a handful of galvanized nuts big enough to put the doubled up wire through for the cost of one or two of those u-bolt locks. heat them to red hot with a torch or in a fire and let them cool then you can just smash them with a hammer or with your vise grips they are less bulky and alot cheaper.

  • thank you! thank you! thank you! :)

  • would you suggest the camp axe or boys axe?

  • the murries is a good pick up i use it for my hair that stuff lasts forever (at least 6 months) and i use more then it looked like you used

  • murrys will last you for ever i own some (for my hair) they usely last me for 6 months and i use far more then what it looked like you used for those cotten balls

  • I don't understand the painting of the stainless steel items. Does it keep it from sooting up in the fire?? Also what about cleanup, will the paint come off?

  • @makkdot1 he stated in a previous video that he painted the bowl and bottle with the high heat paint to help keep wood resin and other things from building up on the bottoms and being messy or causing corrosion when he used them in the fire.

  • one thing u used dry kindling what if u didnt hav any? not to critisize

  • @tylerpienta If its been pouring and you cant find anything dry underneath anything. You can take your knife and split down broken branches in half. Unless they have been soaking in a pool of water. The wood on the inside is dry for kindling. Dave has some older videos that deal with that unless he had to take them down.

  • @JamesD2023 i know this but im just sayin he should hav tried both just in case

just to make shur it would light any wood

  • this is so great man, sharing wisdom and survival tips and maybe even saving lives if we ever need to use these during an emergency. I know I love doing this stuff for fun to educate myself and also as a hobby but I really want to say that I love what you're doing with these videos man! Great Job! Bless~

  • Dave thanks to these vids i have a low cost kit. I make 20$ week from allounce and i bought about 165$ of kit in a few months.

  • what backpack is that message me

  • build t-pee with kindling shove cotton ball inside light and enjoy. thank you so much for takeing the time to help the common man. Most people have zero survival skills im glad your doing what your doing and your show duel survival is great tell the hippy to put on some shoes lol

  • build t-pee with kindling shove cotton ball inside light and enjoy

  • I really like those snares, I might even go with 1/32" wire rope... That 96lb rating is like a safe working load not a break strength. I have seen the 1/16" stuff hold 250-300 lbs easy. And btw jfyi that clamp you are using is called a Crosby clamp and you always put it on so that the live end of the rope rests in the saddle and the dead end is clamped down by the u bolt. "Never Saddle a Dead Horse"

  • Dont forget your Blackberry 3:22 3:38!! hahaha

  • still say he needs to add at least a shotgun

  • Great videos, very instructive. just wanted to know what kind of pants and boots did you have in this video or the others? i wanted to know how durable they were and how much safer than say jeans (which are terrible) if cold and wet?

  • That snare wire looks more like 4ft than 2ft long. I tried 2ft and I don't have much left to set the snare properly with.

  • Great video, good info- Cheers bro.........NZ

  • heck for spoons i just find the crappiest fork/spoon in my house, clean em real good and tie em together, works great for me haha great vid dave learned alot

  • I'm going with what the last guy said

  • On behalf of myself and every other survivalist out there, we thank you for doing what you do. I've had many a simple question answered in a very quick, easy to understand manner about the craft. Keep doing what you're doing!

  • @mattlowry87 Agree. I learned a lot of these videos...

  • Silly question, but how do you attach the snare wire to a solid base, dont you need more attachments?

  • Dave, I've seen multiple discount bushcraft videos, what I would like to see is a no holds barred, money wise, bushcraft kit. Kind of the best of the best, not the most expensive, just the best you can get. I know that's kind of counter to the whole bushcraft philosophy, but a minimalist kit that you know is not going to fail you. How about it?

  • @Joe55darter I am not sure how these items would fail you.....

  • @Joe55darter I Like the Idea! but... who's Payin??

  • thanks a lot dave !!!

  • Hello folks! I purchased a small container of Murray's pomade at our local dollar store and I was so impressed by the product I purchased another can of Murray's Beeswax Black. I use the plain Murray's Beeswax in yellow container for specific duties and use the Murray's Beeswax black for my tools and fishing reels. Dave, thank you for commenting on the product as I have added it to my B.O.B.

  • I'm a Dapper Dan man, myself.

  • Dave. I use old spare guitar strings to make small snares. They work good. Should check that out.

  • @IdigHistoryVideo yea i use them as well works great

  • @Caleb4551 They do! And its pretty much already set up to go right out of the pack. Threw the hole, make a loop. And set it up and your off. Best part is. you can find good deals on steel guitar strings at any guitar store. Buy a few. They are compact. And fit in your pack easily. Perfect for small game. And holds really well. I also used braided beading wire as well. Which also works. Gonna make daves this weekend. I got a nice die punch set that will make the penny part easy.

  • what a but band aids for Bush craft Kit

  • 1. About that *high heat* paint: it says, that you should not use this paint on surfaces, which treats with open fire.

    2. About axe with wooden handle: i do not recommned This one. If you purchase it, prepare to make handle from time to time (it is easy to break)

    3. You may use plexiglas for *firestarter*. It is lightweight, *always dry* material which burns even on strong wind. It is easy to obtain(Cotton balls only needed when you use flint). Main disadvantage of plexiglas is not eco-friendly

  • i watch all your videos dave and its nice to see that there r people still out there getting the kids back in to the out doors and i have learned so much from you and your videos thanks dave and i hope you have a good new years brother

  • whats palmade

  • @reighmey "whats palmade"

It's a kind of petroleum-based cream used in hair styling.

  • @ArtemiaSalina use that murphys polmade with caution!

i used some in my hair for a 1920`s party to slick it back real greasy and it didnt wash out for 3-4 months no joke.

  • @bjizzle123 Olive oil will wash it right out.

  • @BTeamHooligan

man where were you 5 years ago?!!!

  • @bjizzle123 Ha. I went through a rockabilly phase in high school. The only problem is I hate havin that greasy feeling in my hair at night. So I was washing with olive oil or dish washing liquid every night.

  • @BTeamHooligan

    makes sense

  • Dave, on your snare instead if the 2 nut locking device, if you take a nut large enough to fit the wires and then hammer it down to secure the 2 wires it will be lighter and much cheaper. And still do the same job.

    Al

  • In my state it is illegal to take hare or rabbits by use of a snare = (

  • @SuperR3volver that might be so, however in a survival situation i highly doubt that you'll get in trouble.

  • Great vids Dave/Wildernessoutfitters. It seems almost sacreligious to spend excessive amounts on bushcraft items, even though some of the more pricey items can be pretty cool.

  • i have asked people in the stores and they say your not supposed to boil water in those metal water bottles and soup cans is that true

  • @JesseTBlack LOL! If stainless steel isn't safe I wonder what they cook out of then.

  • What does spraying the bottle with paint do for it?

  • @Honeycomb9000 Keeps it from getting sticky from resins the fire creates.

  • @Honeycomb9000 It keeps the resin and sap from your firewood from making the sides of your containers sticky.

  • i love the snare idea ima try out one of those

  • In my kit I got an 12'' cold steel spear machete, which is AWESOME for 13$!!!

  • Great video.

    Keep on Prepping

  • I like the video, but I wouldn't show the destruction of a penny or any other money, I would suggest you use a leftover electrical coin from the outlet boxes etc for the snare. I also like the snare kit for 15, lots of good ideas, I'm just saying watch out for BIG BROTHA

  • @moofasa1211 According to the history channel what he did with the penny is perfectly legal. It's my understanding that defacing federal reserve notes is illegal.

  • Lets say you had to go back to indian days of survival for Under a couple hundred bucks what 10 items would you consider then?

  • 2:04 scrape scrape scrape... screw it!

  • Why paint the pot black? Is it for heat or reduce the "flash" of the metal?

  • Great ideas. Down to earth guy.

  • hmmmmm... What kind of watch is that?

  • Buy a good fixed blade knife,a kabar ,or sog seal pup and learn the little tricks for splitting wood with them and you will find the axe is not that important to take with you.

  • @savageriverman Your gonna baton wood for how long years? You think your knife is gonna last that long batoning wood LULZ....Good luck.

  • i want a mora like dave's can anyone tell me where to get one the link would be appreciated

  • what is the link to his store?

  • what is the link to his store?

  • what did you use to cut the wire cable

  • Hi, I am kind of new to surviving in the woods and find these videos interesting because i really don't know what all i will need. Are there any videos that actually show this stuff in action or to learn how to survive with it? Maybe a reference site or books or maybe an organization of seasoned people that can teach?

  • im not to damn impressed with gerber there macheties are junk and ive had problems with the hatchets to

  • looks like to me you buy a lot of stuff that you might not really need

  • @61520a Sounds like to me you weren't paying attention.

He clearly stated that he was showing the viewers the upgrades you can make as you go and when you can afford them.

  • @markshmily the way it works is what you carry in you have to carry out. the only tool you really need to take with you is a hachet.

  • @61520a Have you ever been out in the woods? Sure a hatchet is handy and all.. but I'd rather have a good knife and a folding saw any day and twice on sunday.

  • @markshmily yes i have lived in the woods, i was there for a week or so with just a knife and hachet, and done pretty good.

  • @markshmily i too prefer a folding saw since you can make a good throwing weapon with it to discharge small game with (like the rabbit stick from wildernessoutfitters). even tho a hatchet can be used as a great discharging tool, you run the risk of degrading a tool when you throw it, and a hatchet is typically much heavier and more cumbersome than a folding saw. always treat your kit well so it lasts.

  • Dual survival rocks !

  • brasso works well aswell

  • Doesn't cody have one of your knives? that made me laugh lol.

  • Dave is a cool dude.Eww i dont like them traps though i know i eat meat so i am a hypocrit i just dont like suffering. I know a good trap limits suffering and i know their is 100 times suffering in slaughter houses. I would use caloeies to kill my self. Please dont comment i respect dave

  • God job Dave. Wasn't aware of the bent penny trick on the snare. Good useful insight jamesjeff44

  • a guitar string makes a great snare and already has a brass eye to loop the string through

  • Big thanks from UK Dave

  • once again thank you dave

  • Lovin this vid, awesome advice Dave thats why ur King!!!!!

  • Great stuff ! for people on a budget (Like me) :)

  • Suprised you didn't look at the grain of the hatchet handle.

    cheers

  • what are the benefits of a wood handle axe?

  • Great video, Dave. I can't wait to practice.

  • do u not carry the mora on your site anymore?

    i couldnt find it

  • isnt this guy off of dual survival

  • I would have ditched the axe and the knife and spent $20 on a Cold steel carbon steel Kukri Machete. It chops like a camp axe and is very versatile. Can be used as a draw knife a drill and batons wood like no other.

  • just wanted to thank you for making these video's. i feel like i am in school mimicking a sponge, sucking all the info up! :D my daughter is 12 and she is really into survival & hunting. i recently made her one of the biblical type slingshots. she's is having a blast with it, she also has a wrist supported slingshot as do i. i figure, better safe than sorry. your VERY practical knowledgeable advice for those of us who can't afford the classes is invaluable. THANK YOU!!

  • that snare design is genius!!!!

  • chillicothe ohio thats were i got every thang on that list

  • Sooo...are you currently out on the trail? If so, what parts?

Here are some more cheap ideas.

    Vaseline soaked cotton balls (fire)

Dental Floss (snares, survival line, ect)

Fire starter Logs= .88 cents at Wal-Mart (fire)

Re-use Sterno cans when empty. Stuff empty cans with cotton balls, insulation, (any other material ideas??) and pour in alcohol (or??) and viola!

Make a stove stand out of a soup can with holes drilled in it to set your cookware on.

  • @YouImposter clothesdryer lint is really good to use to start fires to and it's something that usually gets tossed in the trash. :D

  • great videos dave, keep up the good work.

  • what was an ex army guy doing in his wifes make up kit?? lol

  • @Argar1980 Hey Argar, I heard some military (branch..?anyone know?) guys wear pantyhose as under garment for extra warmth! I know for sure some hunters in Montana do and they ONLY do because it WORKS!

  • Dave

Great Vid, got some good ideas, tyvm

  • BSA clear orienteering compass 11.00$ at scount store

  • lol i love how dave is like screw that tag on the bowl

  • 3:26 and at 3:41 and at 4:10 you can hear his blackberry chime in his emails lol. Great info

  • Totally great attitude you are showing and in the end that kit is totally up to it. Reminds me of that SAS guy with the cheap knife in one of the vids around YT.

  • why does he have to stop filming?

  • @Thecando He is under contract with Discovery for Dual Survivor.

  • great video. nuf said ;)

  • you do know its a federal crime to deface federal currency, right?? lol.

  • I have a small request:

Is there any way you could make a video for people about making a bushcraft kit to take on an airplane>? (all legal) it would help me alot and some others, I think.

    thanks so much.

  • how would you make a cover for your ax

  • love what you're doing. thanks.

  • lolol at 9:44 "the wife's" makeup cabinet i loled

  • i have one of those little metal hatcets. its alright but the handle is quite uncomfortable so i pelled the rubber off and put a big length of duct tape on for a handle and now its comfortable to chop with.

  • if you play electric guitar you can use the strings from them as snares:)

  • Simple, easy to follow ideas. I appreciate your time and effort in making these videos. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

  • These items are on clearance today and were expected to sell for christmas this is why they are so cheap and you have many choices for many differnt kits.

  • Recent finds at walmart were all winchester knives or tools . Multi tool spring loaded sharp knives great multitool for a pack has a quality file $2.50

Winchester package of 4 knives $4the package contains the rip off swiss army quality file sharp knife phillips/flat screw driver only thing missing was the tooth pick,,,,, a smaller ripoff swiss army a nice lock blade and a small double blade jack knife. All these knives have wooden handles.

  • Keepin' it real & keepin' it true!!

    Salute!

  • those cheap metal handle axes suck because the handle is actully hollow and can snap also the rubber grip slips down a little with each strike. i know from experience

  • Great stuff brother please keep up the good work, My and I will be going out to learn some of your bushcraft together. There seems to be a lot of ego that goes with talking about bushcraft.

In another video you spoke about how nobody knows it all and learning this is a continueing process. So if the opther brothers and sisters reading this should check their ego, teach the ignorant and learn from each other. (in response to some of the comments below)

  • super glue wood be a great addition brother, Real strong for fixing stuff, works great for wounds that would otherwise need stitches
