My first car had this engine and was solid, but it got wrecked.
My next car was a more abused, overheat prone Fiero w/ same engine. It had blowby and low compression but kept going forever. Even in that condition, mileage on a hwy trip was low 30s with the 3spd cruising at 3500rpm.
Only real breakdown was a stripped cam timing gear, which is common. Non-interference but a pain to replace the gear.
I wanted to try rebuilding it but found frame nearly rusted through, so it became a parts car.
@davida1hiwaaynet By far it does. My cousin had an iron duke S-10, and he "tried" (really weak engines, nothing to my 2005 Monte Carlo SS supercharged and 2011 Camaro SS) driving it around like an idiot on the roads. I don't think it lasted more than 80k miles..? Yes, this had some wear and tear on it by 100k miles, but after initial repairs everything has been smooth. Still never broke down on me. More comfortable than my other cars, too. ;P Also, only gets 24 mpg. Thats bad for a 4-banger.
@lumker Wow 24 MPG? I haven't driven this car enough to know milage. My friends on a-body dot net seem to get much better milage with their Duke cars.
For reference, a 1989 3800 gets nearly 30 MPG on the highway. That is a 160 HP engine.
@davida1hiwaaynet I always wondered why the cars I've had before, like my 1994 Honda Accord with about 200 hp, 1999 camaro rs, and 2005 monte carlo ss supercharged got better mpgs, and put out an assload more horsepower... maybe a very basic design? All i know is I've maintained it the way i maintained my previous cars; accord went 213k miles, camaro rs went 176k, monte carlo ss supercharged whent 149k and motor had to be rebuilt, and the camaro ss no problems, but less than 500 miles on it.
i would actualy buy that car its pretty nice ecpt the hood roof trunk lid

@lumker The Iron Duke in an interesting engine. They are very reliable, but seem to suffer fromearly wear-out issues.
Seems the Duke is completely worn out by the time most other GM engines need a basic overhaul.
I'm not saying it's a bad engine - just needs to be treated a little gentler than the other GM powerplants.
