  • i thought he kept saying "deadly" lol

  • ugh ive been transitioning for 7 months and i will never get a perm again!!! i cant believe parents would perm their childrens hair so young smh @bad parenting

  • @snickerdoodles787 How's the transition going? I'm seriously considering doing it.

  • its wonderful. i cant believe how curly thick and healthy my hair is. im doing it for the length bc my family has long hair in its natural state. i had waist length b4 my perm and its been getting shorter ever since. my permed hair is now around my collar bone. but it is not easy. u need 2 find protective styles (i use youtube alot) with out heat! pin ups are so cute. and its liberating now i can workout everyday and swim without worrying about straightening my hair LOL

  • @neecee401100

also im not mixed. my mom has coarse hair my dad has nice slick hair but he still black...i think his daddy was white though...or indian lol

  • disgusting!

  • I'm biracial (black/white) I've been getting perms since I was 12, I'm 19 now and I miss my natural curly hair but theres just no way I'm cutting my extremely long hair off to go back natural. I don't know what to do but after seeing this video I'm scared of perms :/

  • But many white women don't even have actual straight hair. Many of them have wavy or curly hair which they flat iron without mercy, and still many others don't even know they have wavy or curly hair because its damaged or coated in silicones and dried out form the shampoos and conditioners they use. There are even quite a few very white people who secretly use relaxer and lets not forget those Brazilian blowouts. If anyone on this planet has truley straight hair its the people of Asia :/

  • I WILL NEVER LET THAT POISONOUS SHIT SCALD MY HAIR. My hair is fluffy, very long and sexy. I've been natural all my life, lucky me. Dudley more like deadly. I love my hair, and the girls in India should know that their hair they chopping off is going to be sold in markets in stores.

  • if you hairs relaxed white people are relaxed if your hair is nappy white people aren't happy lmao # best line ever

  • I cut all my relaxed hair off about a month ago...

I WILL NOT GO BACK TO THE RELAXER...Lol! My hair may be short, but no burns, I can scratch if I want to (not that I have b/c my hair is moisturized so no dryness) just brush and go...

  • This documentary was enlightening, I watched it when I was transistioning to natural. I'm sad about the economic ramifications, I don't like that girls in India are getting there hair cut as they sleep for profit, and I don't like the denial and judgement we are throwing around. If you haven't seen all of it please watch it, it goes beyond hair.

  • How come Lance(Pootie Tang)Crouther wasn't interviewed in this, wasn't his hair relaxed? They interview all the guys that had one.How come he wasn't?

  • europe and the nitemare it still on Jah PEOPLE

  • i got a nice black girl and she got african hair ......i got a real girl

  • How is this dermatologist wearing light eye contacts while criticizing sodium hydroxide hair straighteners? This world is full of insanity.

  • @SuuupaSugoi that is something different though, straightners are bad for you, contacts are not

  • @galcoolgal 1. Contacts decrease the amount of oxygen getting to the cornea (which has no blood supply) and carry the risk of corneal scratches and eye infection. There is a growing problem of young people buying cheap, unregulated, non-prescription colored contacts (usually lighter) for aesthetic reasons. This Dr is setting a bad example. 2. Half of the controversy over hair straitening is imposing N. European beauty ideals on AA women, which is exactly what this Dr is re-enforcing.

  • @SuuupaSugoi First off, how do you know that she has contacts? Second of all, what does it have to do with a relaxer?? No correlation whatsoever.

  • For some reason, I think black women look gorgeous with shaved heads.

  • This is how it is with everyone of all races. People want beautiful hair, if women get a bad hair cut they will cry and be devastated about it. People dye, cut, straiten, get weaves, extensions and do all kind of crazy shit to their hair in order to feel good about themselves. Its a vicious cycle cause it simply never ends with just hair

  • It felt like I was watching myself when I seen that 6 year old girl getting a relaxer.....

  • This video clearly shows how much Black people are brainwashed. We were trained to believe that our natural kinky/curly hair is ugly and unmanageable. A lot of Black women have NO clue how to care for their hair and frankly probably dont want to know, which is why they are addicted to the creamy crack. Why is that young girl getting her hair relaxed? This is ridiculous.

  • I'm a white girl with 2b-ish hair. I never got a hair treatment at a salon before. I learned a lot. It's interesting.

  • I use relaxer on my hair because i'm too lazy i'm white btw

  • THERE IS NOT SUCH THING AS "good hair"!!!!!!!! I hate when people say that!!!!!

  • That test the chemist did really made me laugh... WHO WOULD ALLOW A STYLIST TO LEAVE A RELAXER ON THEIR HEAD FOR AN HOUR, MUCH LESS FOUR!?

  • he's acting like he doesn't know anything about relaxers, and perms, weaves lol

  • I have a six year old and I would never.. She don't need it luckily. What ever happened to press n comb??

  • @AlloftheAbuv she dont need it? noone needs it lol. thats the kind of thinking that needs to stop

  • @mimi42428 Which is why I said whatever happened to the press n comb. I mean, to each his own but you can do whatever you want to your hair, no one needs makeup either, but it's relatively safe.. so. But I would never put it on my child's hair. I am semi-natural as I don't wear weave, but I do relax my hair..!

  • Chemical genius under the professors, name...

  • "You smart" and give her a hug,, I love Chris Rock so much !!

  • I asked my mom if i could get relaxer and she said "Like Hell!" lol

  • @utena90210 LOL. That comment made my day.

  • @utena90210 Your mum's very smart.

  • how can 3 ppl dislike this?

  • natural hair is amazing!

  • im good with my curls

  • I felt my hair was long and nappy.and i loved that perm look. so i went and got one i woke up the next day with very thin hair and very bad breakage at the nape of my neck. this caused me great depression. i do regret getting a perm(my mom begged me not to get one) .ppl see me now and can not believe the state my hair is in. i have gone to the best beauticians and none of them can get my hair back strong and healthy. if anyone have any advice. hit me up. thanks! GREAT JOB CHRIS!

  • @chasity316 Go back to your natural hair.

  • @chasity316 Try cutting it bald and wearing wigs, or just cut it low (you might look really nice with a low cut). You'll have 6 inches or more in a year. That's the usual growth rate.

  • i love my afro too

  • 02:54 (>_<)

  • wow! what a great documentary. i am 22 and i got my first perm when i was 20. Up until then I was getting my hair pressed by my mom. My hair was very long, thick, silky(only after i got it pressed) My natural hair was big and puffy, not wavy or curly. I HATED MY HAIR. I hated getting it pressed and how the least amount of moisture caused my hair to draw up. I did not feel confident about my appearance because my hair was not like "everyone else", but people LOOOOVVVEEED my hair.

  • I GOT MY FIRST PERM AROUND 5 YEARS OLD......YOUNG, HUH?

  • Paul Mooney LOL

  • Lmaoo, washing my hair

  • @thejazzybear19 we gotta let em know!!! lol its about how you care for your hair thats important!!!!

  • ugh I'm so glad I don't get relaxers anymore...I never knew how to care for my relaxed hair, so I never had any significant growth. But now that I don't change the composition of my hair, its much easier to care for, and it's growing like a weed, and if I want I can have it bone straight, but most time, I don't even want to anymore :)

  • I have no problem with women who wear relaxers but I just couldnt do it anymore.. That shyt hurts like hell

  • @MsSpeakMyMind1 i couldn't stand it especially with it itching it's like your head knows when its getting a perm it's start itching like crazy

  • Im on the "Creamy Crack" and I aint ashamed lol and I also have a permanent color "33" my hair is constantly growing...at the end of the day you just have to know how to take care of it

  • @theREALAprilshow exactly:)

  • Black women we don't want to be "white" we love our culture. White women are the ones who ask us a million questions about our hair. They are interested in our hair because they want hair like ours, never have I heard a black person ask a white person what they do to get their hair the way it is. And I don't have kids but there is no way in hell I would put a perm on my daughters hair, when she gets old enough to pay to get her own hair done then she can make that decision for herself.

  • deadly products

  • ....I'm never putting another perm in my hair. I've been telling my mom I want to go natural, she says it'll be tough but I'll do it. This scared me. >.<...

  • "If your hair is relaxed, White people are relaxed. If your hair is nappy, they're not happy." - Paul Mooney

You Gotta Love That Guy XD

  • The little girl said it best: "You're supposed to get a perm."

  • I got my first perm when I was 6th grade. I grew it out and went natural because there was a lot of breakage. Then I got a texturizer sophomore year. I took/take much better care of my hair now and I only get it texturized twice a year. It makes me wince seeing people getting there kids hair permed so young and so often. They think their natural hair is bad when it's not. I've been natural and permed and I love it both ways.

  • ps I was 10 my first relaxer just for me ...thats still my brand

  • Once you go relaxed its like u never can go back I have curly hair and everyone says "oh are u half" but really I still get a relaxer once a year if not I am not use to the look that occurs from it But I will never relax my future kids hair for sure it will be there choice I had to get one because my braids was left in to long and my grandma only knew relax it or hot comb it and my hair really would have been gone with a hot comb lol

  • oh and my story with perms is that i had my first perm at 5 years old and now i am 17 and have been natural for a couple of weeks. when i was a kid i had caught on to the nappy is bad thing. the kids would call you bad names including nappy headed lil girl nd whatnot. and every time i had a little new growth, it was time for a perm. so i did think that our hair was bad just from observing. but now i know it's not because good hair is healthy hair!!! and i am no longer ashamed of how i look (:

  • that can's gotta good perm haha!

i went natural a couple weeks ago and i love it so much (:

  • i got my first perm when i was 7. i was never exposed to negative comments about 'good hair and bad hair'. my mom never made racist comments about nappy hair, but for some reason i always thought straight hair looked better. i just dont like the way black hair looks. but i still think future generations of black girls should be taught at a very young age that their natural hair is beautiful, so they dont end up damaged. their should be an age limit for perms

  • @xLavenderBlossomx I agree. That part with the little girl getting a perm made me tear up a bit. I felt chest pains. Why would one do that to a little girl. Personally if relaxers were going to be done it has to be at the same age hair coloring is ok... around the teens. About middle or high school age is ok. Hair is strong enough to handle the stuff, compare to a younger child. My first hair coloring was done at 15 yrs of age, still dye my hair and I have a lot of it still.

  • @xLavenderBlossomx but its not as beautiful. That's a fact, its stiff, coarse, has no movement, waterproof, it's not beautiful, it's functional, like a trayback ute.

  • Comment removed

  • @neelantra yeah i get that and it's sad.

  • @xLavenderBlossomx im 12 and my mom says u will get your first relaxser in 19 - 20 my hair is very long !

  • This is why I went natural.

  • @Sweetlynatural10 So awesome to hear that. I'm still stuck on the creamy crack call hair color. And to those who think that hair coloring is different. It's not. It has some of the same damaging chemicals as relaxers do. Back to Sweetlynatural10, thank you for sharing your inspirational thoughts.

  • @LadyBludgeon Your welcome. LOL I love that name, the creamy crack, too funny!

  • That doctor was like "why on earth would you put this in your hair?" To any white people out there: you don't know how easy you have it!

  • @eier I laughed at that line the doctor said. Anyways I wouldn't say that all white people have it easy... we just have a different creamy crack to use. It's called bleach & hair dye. Bleaching to look more Nordic (European blonde)/ lighter hair or dye to a different color than our own natural color because natural is seen as bad especially gray on women. Yes hair dyes do have the same chemicals as relaxers. There is a reason why I haven't had lice or any other nasty bugs in my hair for 15 yrs.

  • @eier This is the one case in which the WHITE guy is giving sound advice.

  • Natural is the way to gooooooooooooooo

  • im actually doing a photography project on this :D i just hope it inspires someone to go back natural

  • I cant believe i used to wear relaxers.......this is horrible......im so glad i went natural.....

  • as a chemistry major, i did not appreciate that scientist failure to explain Molarity in his example. The Molarity in the home relaxor kit is nothing like what he was using.

  • @ryoshi100 Please elaborate a bit. I know what you mean. Just want it more clear for others who are viewing this video. As for the chemicals...ammonium thioglycolate & alkali are still ammonium thioglycolate & alkali regardless the amount. Yea it wouldn't do the same damages in the same amount of time as shown in the video but over time & long periods (seen 1 salon leave this on for five hrs) will cause irreversible damages to the whole scalp & well being of that person who is having this done.

  • @LadyBludgeon Molarity is measurement of dilution. The lye is a base which is very caustic (the slipperiness is because it's literally dissolving our cells) however there is a difference between the molarity in the example of the coke can and the molarity of the average hair relaxer. It would be illegal to make a hair product that was pure lye. So, we are talking about a mixture that is 15% pure caustic soda. Still bad for your hair no doubt, but the example was misleading.

  • @LadyBludgeon there should be a decimal. Not 15% my bad 1.5 %. Of course, salon brands are going to be much more concentrated than the kiddie perms you guy at walgreens.

That may seem like a small amount, but when it comes to pure chemicals, a little can pack a whole lot of punch. Bases are strange monsters from a chemical standpoint.

  • @ryoshi100 Thank you so much for elaborating that. :) You would be surprised at what manufacturers would pass on in their products. Watch "America the Beautiful" Derril goes to find out how much phthalates are in some cosmetic products. I wouldn't be surprised if some relaxers may have that pure lye labeled as a fragrance, which is regarded as a trademark ingredient secret. Not stating that you're wrong. It's just a thought. FDA doesn't always have our best interes, so pure lye can be present.

  • @LadyB been wanting 2 see that doc! (4 free. lol) adding extra percentages of dangerous chemicals marked as fragrance, sounds like a conspiracy that would kill an industry! could u imagine the lawsuits if the majority of relaxed ppl had bald heads full of serious take your a** 2 a hospital lesions? fragrance on a label can encompass tons of ingredients. i try to avoid it especially if it's a high priced brand. if a brand is natural/ lots o $ fragrance should come from essen. oils!

  • @LadyBludgeon did u call the better business bureau abt this salon? they need to be shut down! that would have been a public service! if u were getting a service done u shoulda walked out in protest! idk, maybe there r a lot more ppl doing it wrong bc i have never run into the type of extra serious problems that some naturals & others speak of while relaxing. i hope i never do!

  • @ryoshi100 exactly! ppl point 2 that scene & i'm like they showed sodium hydroxide w/out all the additives that stop it from burning through to someones brain! & i'm like r u serious? c'mon u don't have 2 b a chemists 2 see that scene is more abt drama not facts. yes relaxers cause damage, so does hair dye. that doc is clearly biased & more for sh*ts & giggles. fascinating that someone who married a girl w/ loose curls took it upon himself to tackle this topic!

  • I remember perms, but what i remember the most is how thin my hair used to feel after my mom did it. I felt like I could see my scalp through my hair. It's not for everyone, my hair is definitely healthier now that it's natural.

  • not to be overly sensitive but this almost made me cry.

  • I am transitioning to my natural hair. Never again will I get a perm, and I will never give my children perms.

  • I got my first relaxer around the age of 8. I love relaxers though. I do not like my curly hair :P.

  • I didn't get a perm until I was...6 or 7.

  • the little girl near the end broke my heart....

  • its not our fault we have nappy hair and want to make it more manageable and appeal more to us.

  • @jaya7000 "It's not our fault we have nappy hair" You say that like it's a bad thing. I rock my natural hair and it's just as manageable as it was when I used to relax it.

  • @ReesieDenise trust me. i'v had my hair natural for most of my life but i can't get it in any way manageable. i'm not saying its a bad thing to have black hair, because i'm mixed yet still have crazy curly hair but isn't it easier to make it more manageable than not?

  • @jaya7000 Of course people want manageable hair. But your comment insinuated that it's hard to manage "nappy" hair. For one thing the term is kinky and if you're mixed so I doubt you have it. You probably have beautiful extremely thick, extremely curly hair, which issn't the same as beautiful extremely thick and kinky hair. Yes, if ones feels like their hair isn't manageable they can change it if the will. But don't speak for all Black hair when you insinuate that it's hard to manage.

  • iiLove Traciie Thoms..

    her hair is Freakin beautiful...

  • naw man ever since i gt a perm i can nt go 2daiis naturall and if i do i stay home in my room

  • bless his daughter she's cute :) god bless him and his family, Love Chris Rock and I would love to see any show about any topic if he's in it :)

  • I remember before I started my first day of kindergarten, my mom gave me 2 choices. I could rock a jheri curl or get a Just For ME. I didn't have a choice. My hair stayed broke off because she never maintained it, just so long as it was straight. When i was 14 I started doing my own hair. I experimented with natural off and on. But now, i'm full fledged natural and I love it.

  • If I could go back in time I would stop my dad from putting relaxer in my hair when I was three ><

  • @RandomDreamer05 wtf?? ur dad?

  • @UTubeuzername84 Yeah, my dad v.v I don't even know why he put it in my hair in the first place! But his mum is still upset with him to this day for doing that to my hair XD

  • My kids aren't getting perms! When I have kids, that is...

  • i thought he was saying deadly lmao

  • I wish more of us wake up and use their unique natural beauty

  • I Love my Afro

  • @karaloca That's awesome. I wish more people would be like that... enjoy their natural texture, rather than putting acid on it to conform some unrealistic ideals of beauty. Ever since I was a child I would admire the uniqueness that our gender has. The diversity of our hair. Men don't have this uniqueness. Many of them all look the same. To conform to the ideal of beauty is saying "I hate my uniqueness. I hate myself. I want to be a puppet for society." Anyways thank you for commenting. Peace.

  • @karaloca I agree with you also, I love mines too :)

  • @karaloca I regret perming my hair!
