Warm Greetings Dale, some of us go through life and touch others in a positive way, spreading knowledge, and enhancing lives, you are one of these individuals,
Very Nice.I leaarned this from the fake book back in the day. It sounded wrong with the wrong chord voicings so I put it on a shelf. With your help it lives again. One question I have is in the verse are you sure it goes to the open A instead of returning to the fitfh fret like in the chorus? It sounds great either way. I have been a fan of Dan's for many years and miss him. He was one of the best of our time.
thanks for your kind post and taking time to watch - i'm with you on missing DF - a huge acoustic influence for me! I shot this vid after watching DF very closely playing this tune and using my years of listening experience - i'm not sure that everything is exact - it is the best i could do with my limited abilities and resources. I tend to think the recording is one thing and as the artist evolves with the song then when watching them live they may deviate from the original. Best,
@tonedr I have watched a few videos on here and I think your right about the arrangement. It is almost always different.I like the solo '91 video. It looks like he plays the D chord with the 3rd string or G open throughout the song. The same as your ending. It is way different on the 2003 video.Maybe because it is with a band?Yours is probably like the original on Souvenirs. What a great record with Joe Walsh playing and producing. Thanks again my neighbors are probably tired of hearing it
Sounds beautiful and more authentic than what I have in my DF Volume 1 book.
But I have trouble following your descriptions of the chords. Even an ASCII diagram posted in comments would help. Otherwise I have to roll the video back and forth many many times to catch what you describe.
Hey Dale, hope all is well in your world. Intersting observation I made, The high A note you and I hear on the original recording in the intro is from Dan playing it most of the time on his 12 string, which gets that high note from the octave string on the 4th or D string. I played it first on my 6, then the 12, and heard that. There are several vids posted og Dan doing it both w/ a 6 electric and 12 acoustic. At least you and I are hearing the same! lol. Thanks again for a great lesson, man!
unfortunately i'm just not set up for that and i don't have a reliable tab source to refer to you either. I apologize for not being able to have all the resources that would help.
hello friend, hope all is good where you are! The snow has settle in here which isn't all bad - more guitar time. Thanks for your kind post and i really appreciate you watching - stay well!
God bless Dan Fogelberg and rest his soul. Dale, you've solved a decade's old mystery for me! Been trying to learn this song forever and now you've taught me! Thanks so much, man! I can't handle the angelic high vocal register like Dan did, but I'll improvise somehow. At least I can play it now!!! Great lesson, Dale, thanks sooooooo much!!! You're amazing!
speaking of Dan..........I played and sang his song "Longer" face to face to my wife on the altar at our wedding in 1980, had half the church in tears.......lol.......Dan was truly a musical genius and I miss him.
sadly so, but like you said earlier, their music lives forever! wow, Dale, can't believe how easy this tune is to play once you know the double drop D tuning & the elements......thanks again, man, you've made my weekend!
hey Denny - happy new year friend! I sure appreciate your post and thanks for taking time to check out the vid. I hope you enjoying playing this tune and i wish we could play it together! Keep pickin,

You've inspired me to prob. post this song, I have to go 2 frets lower, but it's working! Thanks!
denman1953 2 years ago
Actually, I keep the 12 tuned 2 frets lower all the time to give the poor neck a break, lol
