  • K everybody else saw the fetus head, right?

  • @michaelcrawfordfreak yea and the sprm

  • @IAmFlem Oh good, I thought I was seeing things or something. This movie kinda messes with your brain.

  • 7:40 I always laughed at this shot. I don't know why.

  • basically the alien are studying him.

Trying to decipher if his species is worthy of joining their United Nation.

Apparently... human suck... so they intend to destroy it. Huh...

  • @xponen not really.....

  • @LegendCorridor I didnt even realise I was watching a movie. When I turn on my xbox and put a music cd in it it provides me the same images, only with better music :(

  • i hate it when that happens

  • is he dead?

  • ok, Dave is inside the monolith k hes being absorbed in it just like HAL was in 2010 ,you see dave is becoimng one of them

  • What is this I don't even

  • After that ride I gotta take a dump.

  • so amazing :)

  • Damn, no wonder hippies went to this movie. I'd take a drop of acid for those 10 minutes too. XD

  • wait what the hell is going on in this shit????

  • I hate the fact that I have to guess most of the stuff. It's like free jazz. So self indulgent it only makes sense to the author (and people who read the book in this case).

  • lol I can't believe in the 60's they actually thought 2001 was going to be this futuristic!

  • This movie is purely scientifical and was not influenced by any type of drugs............even though it is a trip.

  • @007LandShark Ha ha that's debatable. I know for a fact he mentions psychedelics in the book (in like, one sentence). Plus... you gotta consider the era.

Also scientifical is not a word. Scientific is a word.

  • Just goes to show you, never TAKE ACID in space.

  • I think there is too much "progressivist" philosophy in the film, be it that I am a "perennialist," but it is still great and speaks of man's quest for knowledge and transcendence.

  • such a terrible phenomena to be witness of....an experience far beyond the higher known state of mind....

  • The way I interpreted it is like this : The star gate sequence is part of the monoliths intent: it is taking Dave back into the dawn of time as part of his eventual enlightenment. The weird blobby colours symbolise birth of galaxies and stars. The imbalance of colour on the overhead shots of canyons take him into the prehistoric periods of Earth , where the imbalance itself suggests the world was 'under construction'. It is from there that he reaches beyond, encapsulating our entire history.

  • @baruavice great man!

  • @SuperColonel77 Thanks :)

  • @baruavice Read the book and you'll get it.

  • @JumpStartation Yea i will now :) . That is what i was wondering -whether the book has a proper explanation for this sequence

  • @baruavice Completely, I highly recommend it.

  • @baruavice They "explain" the ending more in the book. It has to do with extraterestials that have achieved a new plane of existence. Go read the book. Sorry if someone already said this, i dont want to look through a month's worth of comments.

  • @baruavice your thinking the way i do kubrick was a genius

  • getting high does bring enlightenment! XD

  • obviously the aliens set up the monolith to advance the human race and dave is the one that gets to become the next level of "human". The focus on the eyes is a metaphor as a window to our soul, as in many cultures. The aliens set up the room for him because it would look familiar. Then he watches his mortal body whither and die.

It's really not that difficult to understand, the rest o the movie is just a realistic portrayal of what space travel would be like, mundane and overly uninteresting.

  • @slicydicer uninteresting?! shit

  • @Viz731 Like driving a car to work if you were a scientist.

  • @slicydicer One of my dad's friends is a scientist. In fact, a Physicist, yet a devoted Christian as well.. He drives to work and enjoys every second of it. I have been with him before and he loves to point out things.. He enjoys life and never gets tired of it. Great man.

  • @Viz731 Yeah well, it's a mundane task for most people is what I'm getting at, like space travel is in the future.

  • @slicydicer ah okay, i got cha.. God bless and take care ;)

  • i would have shit myself back at the trippy ass ocean

  • Man... i understand women more then i understand this movie. And that says a whole lot

  • i understand that this movie can be 'beautiful' and is 'an art' but seriously? WTF who actually could sit through this shit and be entertained? It's total crap, and moves waaaay too slow. Oh yeah whats with the heavy breathing? that pisses me off

  • You have to be seriously high to understand this...

  • well that was complete mindfuck

  • if you pause at 3:05, it looks like a pair of big black alien eyes with tiny highlights. it's creepy how i just noiticed that!

  • stanley kubrick sucks people need to get over him his only good movie wa sfull metal jacket

  • Comment removed

  • what the fuck....

  • The whole time watching this I thought: "i'm 12 and what is this?"

  • @Myers2Gumbleton I know. Methinks Mr. Kubrick was partaking of some serious "herbal medecine" (if you catch my drift).

  • @ChristianPainter i am thinking more along the lines of synthetic lol.

  • @ChristianPainter nope stanly kubrick said he never took drugs

  • 3:14 anyone have any ideas what these 7 floating objects might represent? I think it's the 7 eyes of God

  • @joshmania7 THey might be the aliens themselves, or their ships.

  • Just some extra creepiness here: So I read in comments that this whole part is reffering to masonry and the illuminati and all that, COINCIDENTALLY THE RATING FOR THIS CLIP IS 66 THUMBS UP AND 6THUMBS DOWN. 666 :D Creepy, no?

  • wat the fuck is this shit?

  • What has been seen....cannot be unseen O.O

  • Whatever, you know what. This movie is 50/50, very good in some areas, lacking in others.. The ending of this movie starts to scratch the surface but doesn't quite get there. But I won't insult this movie if you guys don't insult "The Fountain" which I believe in 40 years time will be a classic.

  • I guess the alien is raping his mind just like he did with HAL.. or he is simply lost in space and his head go nuts..

  • Very good movie. Thanks for posting.

  • Well... other than this being extremely trippy and making a note to self to watch this stoned.........

I fail to see the meaning of this scene.

  • @Childist2 yeah as a matter of fact i thought that too

  • What are those strange "things" at 3:12-3:29???And after 4:03 what are these?A new world??unknown planets in other galaxies??What are all these things, does anybody know here??

  • must

    watch

    this

    on

    LSD

  • @Armigo91 I'm not entirely sure there would be any difference! o_O

  • So, if I understand correctly. The majority of this scene represents his point of view in transitioning from mortal being to immaterial entity, and partly is getting tickets to see this from the lsd imbued audience.

  • seriously what do need drugs for, this scene is trippy enough as it is

  • must

    watch

    this

    on

    shrooms

  • I've been here. Service is shit.

  • this trip through "space gate " could understand only those who expiried the COSMIC DREAM ( only a few people including myself)

  • 2:09 - 2:18 looks like a dolphin face.

    Give me some more lsd

  • I had a trapper keeper that had 3:15 as the cover!

  • 00:00 - 07:14 "Like totally far out man."

  • WTF can someone please explain to me what just happened. This is why directors shouldn't smoke crack before finishing a film

  • There will be no boarding a space ship with out a thorough groping by a fat, uneducated TSA employee grabing your junk.

  • This isn't where i parked my car

  • @corgiboy101 best caption ever.

  • So, starting at 4:00, is that supposed to be the alien homeworld? Or at least the world where the Jupiter monolith's "superior officer" is?

  • @boriato It is the alien homeworld, I believe. the Monolith took him to where it was created... thats what I always thought, anyway.

  • I just noticed that in this scene Dave walks much like that dorky stewardess who grabbed Floyd's pen back on the space shuttle. Wut up with that?

  • people in the 60s are really damn high

  • remind me to watch this part next time i do a psychedelic drug

  • @kraken589 and with "lucy in the sky with diamonds" playing. well it was the 60,s.

  • @kraken589 can't help but feel that would be a very bad idea...

  • @plugindave i think it would be interesting. i could always turn it off if it gets too intense

  • At 9:00, it's the inevitable. Bathrooms are scary in Kubric films. I tell these Kubric characters, STAY OUT OF THE BATHROOM!!! I've been telling them that since Jack Ripper shot himself in the bathroom in Dr. Strangelove, but no one listens to me. At this rate, someone's going to see a ghost in one. Oh yeah, The Shining. Or someone else will get shot in one. Oh yeah, Full Metal Jacket. Or someone will O.D. in one. Oh yeah, Eyes Wide Shut. Did Kubrick get scared in a bathroom as a kid?

  • Is that supposed to be a human fetus at 1:35? A baby head at 2:06? And what's with the flying exclamation point at 3:55? Is this just foreshadowing Bowman's upcoming transformation, or is something else going on here?

  • @boriato it's the oposite. nothing is going on here. turn the movie off now.

  • I'll have 2 of what Dave's having

  • @lockatdeeznutz So will I!! (LMAO)

  • i dont get it? am i not supposed to get it? is it symbolic?

  • lol, 0:20-0:40 makes me wonder if Tool got the inspiration for the cover of their Aenima album.

  • colorful eyes.....

  • Dude, the elites will rather fu%$ us over a million times than spill the beans about alien contact and ET technology...

  • It's the fucking music.

  • @MrMcGwn Yes it is man.

  • I like to think that Bowman discovers everything about everything here.

  • sounds like DMT entities and talking to him inthat room to me

  • if you dont get scare when you trip... it means you havent taken enough

  • Somebody was tripping some serious balls...

  • One bad trip. Kubrick was a smoker, right ?

  • This movie consists of 3 parts

    1st part: Boring, confusing, unentertaining

    2nd part: Sad, special, entertaining.

    3nd part: Holy shiiiiiiiii-

  • im so fucking stoned right now...i dont even know what to say or do about this...what the fuck

  • So many questions about what happens when we venture further into space. Yet we've probably screwd our chances at actually getting out of the solar system before the sun explodes because of nuclear weapons and all the other things that the world can end from.

  • Some of this movie is very frightening to watch.

  • I think the guy that made this had allot of fun messing with the color settings for the movie.

  • My theory? I think he has been smoking some space crack it gets you so high you would shit your pants twelve times if you were to smoke even a little of it.

  • my oun theory y think the farder you get from the sun every living creature would expirience space dementia, no living thing is design to leave the solar system, unless advance technology greater than our body

  • im 12 and what is this

  • Psychodelic.

  • i know how many mololiths there are insactly 42!

  • @TheGhostlyboredom just wow.

  • 8:17

  • @0180917 So creepy.

  • Some fucked up shit this.

  • @ navylaks 2

    indeed! :-) the whole movie.

  • This would be cool in 3D

  • am i tripin...?

  • THE FUCK IS HAPPENING

  • I really wish I was high when I started watching this part.

  • this scene reminds me of the spock scene in star trek the motion picture, where he jets off in a space suit and jet pack. but what's with the landscapes at the end? what planet is that?

  • @GlobalDating probably either IO or Europa.

  • what were those voices in the background when he was standing in the red suit?

  • how did they get to jupiter so fast? I thought it would take a year they said? at the start of this they said they just took off from earth and were watching their recent interview on the screen. huh?

  • Did we really need a 7 minute long "acid trip" wormhole like scene? I think a minute or two would have sufficed.

  • @BlitzWing00 Seriously? In a world of humans running the show and running their mouths, you don't appreciate this detour from dialogue and commonplace situational imagery? In an effort to express the inexpressible, Kubrick wisely lets the images speak for themselves.

  • @sex6cult9revolution well the imeges need hooked on phonix then.

  • sorry for all the comment removeds but i kept editing my post.

  • Clearly the death of black and white cinema in the western world until the likes of Raging Bull and Elephant Man Lol!

  • Whooaaaaa soooo trippy......pretty colors......

  • The last half hour of this movie is still the creepiest damn thing I've seen in a movie. Nothing else has taken better advantage of the horror that can be produced by letting the audience's imagination fill in the blanks.

  • @melosebrainuhoh Way true! This wasn't marketed as a horror film, but it has all the elements of one - freakish music, a few people isolated in a cold, lonely space, running in circles (literally, as Poole jogs around the Discovery), one character (HAL) going crazy & killing people, then the whole Stargate thing which disorients you, takes you to an even more freaky place w/ figures appearing unexpectedly, Bowman seeing himself & suddenly aging... This is as scary as The Shining, if not more!

  • This is a great movie to watch after popping a couple hits of acid. Smoke a couple joints while watching it also. What a freaky trip that would be.

  • Okay Dave, here's the situation: You're all alone. The computer killed your only human contact (outside radio transmission), the three men in stasis are likewise dead. Your spacecraft is 390 million miles from Earth, (double that for a round trip.) Your superiors withheld vital information from you to the extent that the HAL9000 may have been intentionally compromised. And finally, your final orders are to investigate the evidence of extra-terrestrial life without a crew.

  • I'd say get me the hell home.

  • this is daft punk one more time

  • who is that old man? is he a creater of universe?

  • This would be a great movie if you were high and watching it...

  • what is this I don't even...

  • You will see all seeing eye, masonic motifs in every Kubrick's movie.

  • Many of the scenes just after the "BIG BANG" look more like an embryology video than anything else (though they're not all that much like this, either).

And what's the deal with those flashing pyramids & blinking eye? Did the effects guys come from a masonic lodge?

  • it's all caused by HAL releasing nitrous oxide into the air just before being shutdown

  • throughout all of that i was screaming FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • What is it with Kubrick and bathrooms? Dr. Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut all have scenes with people killed or traumatized in bathrooms. Maybe his other films have similar scenes too; I don't know. It's like the Godzilla movies: they always have a scene where they line up tanks and shoot at him. When you see a Kubrick movie, even if you've never seen it before, you'll find yourself saying: "Oh, here comes the bathroom scene..."

  • physchadelic man...

  • thid cloen well below me requires a drug to comprehend this..we;; live in mommy's basement meatpie boy..you are the very reason ..all of us have a long, long way to go before we are evn invited in an inplaneteary roudtable...moron..

Gemma Inc. yes , a female...and not if you were the las t ugly fuck on this planet.

  • When one looks at this particular scene, they are looking at total beauty put to film! Anyone who does not recognize this; it is his problem caused by his ignorance. This may be terrible filming to some folks spoiled by the special effects of the last decade. However, the importance of this movie as a landmark and influential film will never be diminished. It's awesome! Ok?

I am a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick's work, so I understand that some may believe that I am biased in my assessment.

  • can someone explain this part to me (the old dude+fancy room)

  • Comment removed

  • brilliant...

  • I have no clue at this point of the movie... I'm totally lost.

  • he brings books to life

  • wasn't this a normal sic-fi movie about 20 minutes ago

  • It´s just a trip to the inside, a no certainly dimension, the buried knowledge, genuines natural essence............................

  • Can someone explain to me where the HELL Dave traveled too? That always puzzles me. One minute he's traveling the whole galaxy or maybe universe, the next he's in someweird place watching himself grow old. I understand the meaning of the movie but how the hell did he get where he is now?

  • @dasdasist bassically the monalith at Jupiter was a gateway to a cosmic hub which leads to other dimensions, and after travelling through the universe and beyond he ends up in a room where he sees his life pass by representing how his time as a being of matter is over and then he becomes a fetus representing how he is just a baby in his form of pure energy which transcends time and space

  • @graidstin So basically he becomes a theoretical "super being"

  • @dasdasist well yes I suppose so but not in a "I'm gonna take over the world" kind of way but rather he's leading the human race into a new era where they will no longer be bound by their bodies of matter but rather they can live as pure energy and they can travel through space and time uninhibited. and the aliens which are themselves just energy have been leading the humans to this moment since they first sent the monolith to teach the man-apes to use tools(which lead to civilization)

  • @graidstin Hey, im going to try that tomorrow!

  • @graidstin I still think Dave smuggled a bit of acid onboard in the event of boredom

  • @brianhourigan or maybe kubrick did so

  • The "light show" everyone is talking about is (in my opinion) a fault with human perception. As you know, we are limited to what we can perceive. It could be that, according to the perception of the race that created the monolith, what we're seeing is something completely different to them and it makes sense to them.

It's like having a media player that won't play a particular media format because it does not understand the coding in it.

  • I don't know if this is wrong, or extremely obvious, but I'm thinking the lights and colors and things here are the aliens themselves. They became body-less entities, just membranes of consciousness. This red thing starting at 2:14 seems to be a membrane with a giant brain, or other organ inside.

  • @terracottaheavens That's an interesting theory, I'll think about it, thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • uhm...really?

  • at 3:04 does that not look like a grey aliens eyes??!

  • I think that after the deactivating HAL scene, the writers quit, but the director was like "Yeah just have a bunch of colors and the set from "I love lucy""

  • Buzz Lightyear doesnt want to go to this different infinity and beyond...

  • Seems like this is some kind of a recreation of the big bang and the formation of planets... through time travel in fast motion?? Oh.. Mr Kubrick... haha

  • I'll never smoke weed with Willie again...
