This was kind of sad, the show didn't last and 'Archie Bunkers Place' was soon going off the air.,and NO final episode. I guess the series died a quiet death!
Yes, Bud Kreiger! Funny, though, all the characters in All In The Family at one time toyed with the idea of adultery, even Edith (first with "Cousin" Roy at the wedding in Scranton, and then the German butcher, Mr. Klemmer, though they did most of the chasing); Archie, of course, had Denise the waitress, which almost got out of hand; and Mike, first with Linda, his student (played by Bernadette Peters), and in the end, he DID leave Gloria with another student to join the commune!
@telamon2011 really back then i would think aldutery is one of those things they dont talk about. and those "cousin" roy thing telling her they arent really cousins what did he wait untill then to tell ths to her and then wanted to kiss her? ewww that would eel the same as kissing your cousin being so close after all this time. just gross
It was a shame the writers of All in the Family made Gloria an adultress. What a sad episode.Archie and Edith flew to Commiefornia for Christmas to visit Mike,Gloria, and little Joey, and Archie finds out that Mike and Gloria are separated because Gloria had an affair.I had tears in my eye's and a lump in my throat when Archie said this to Meathead."I never thought I'd see the day where I'd say your too good for her!" Gloria started crying. What a VERY sad episode. The writers didn't have 2 do that.
@Bubbajomama I can imagine why, particularly since 2 Ton Sally's thighs & think tank butt resembled the back 1/2 of a 1956 Cadillac, I not only thought those cars were big & blobby, they all looked big enough for each & every 1 of their very own landline telephone area codes. As a kid, I'd always "Oinked-oinked!" @ each & every 1 of those cars, I thought they were just horrible. Each & every time 1 of them passed by me, I'd always gone, "Oink-oink, oink-oink, oink-oink, oink-oink!"
Never wanted to watch this show because I can't see Gloria without Mike. However, I want to watch this show now because the late great Burgess Meredith was a cast member.
The show actually had potential, but one of the problems was that Sally Struthers evidently wanted to cut off all links between Gloria and All In The Family so as to allow the character of Gloria to grow on her own. This upset Carroll O'Connor, especially after he worked to get the show on immediately after the popular Archie Bunker's Place, and also appeared in the first episode of Gloria. It evidently upset the audiences as well, and the show lasted only one season.
God, I remember that disaster! Marla Gibbs could not carry a show with the character of Florence the maid from The Jeffersons. She was lucky in that the show took her back when her own fizzled, the plot being that the hotel burned down, and Florence once again needed a job. Gibbs would find success, however, with the show 227, though as a different character from Florence.
Speaking of bad shows, remember when Bea Arthur (after Maude went off the air) starred in Amanda's Place, a show based on the British sitcom Fawlty Towers? Amanda (Arthur) runs a country inn in northern California, and the characters are largely modeled on the cast of Fawlty Towers, including the nervous little Spanish bellhop. Who would have known that Arthur would have gone on to the notable success of The Golden Girls? (Which had its own short lived spinoff, The Golden Palace).
@ligreekguy I sort'a remember that...It's a matter of hit or miss. John Stamos left General Hospital to star with Jack Klugman in a FAILED 80's series called You Again, but then rebounded, just like Bea Arthur, with the successful series Full House.
Although Stamos faced a much bigger risk in that he was not an established veteran actor in the manner that Bea Arthur was when he left General Hospital (and let us face facts, most soap opera actors never end up anywhere else). He was lucky because of his good looks and the fact that (I hope I do not offend too many people here) that only in the 1980s could a schmoozy show like Full House become a success.
The scenario was that Mike decided to give up everything, including his marriage and career, and join a commune in California. Basically, it was a return to the hippie roots that he never quite relinquished. In an episode from Archie Bunker's Place, Gloria returns to New York with Joey, and discusses with Archie all that happened. She also tells him that she found a job as a veterinary assistant upstate. Edith is dead by this time, and the two share a very tender moment.
@GJNCA in order for a show where Mike is raising Joey, Gloria would have to be killed off leaving Mike as a widow. The UNWRITTEN SITCOM LAW STATES: any show dealing with a single father raising his children has to be a widow.
I don't know what took me so long to look up this series. Would you believe the theme song stuck in my head for the 25 years that it's been off the air--despite my not having heard it since or really watching the show during the one season it aired. I heard it again in this YouTube video late in the 4 AM hour (EST) on Tue. Dec. 8, 2009 (about 4:50 AM). I'm always amazed at how powerful a medium TV is, leaving impressions on us with barely an effort. Or do I just have a different kind of memory?
What's funny about rediscovering these long-lost memories is matching your recollection to the actuality. Sometimes with music, it's exactly as I remember it--down to the last note and lyric. But with dialogue, there's more margin for error. "A" vs. "the" or other small details mean I usually get most of the words correct in recalling, but unless there's a stenographer and archivist in your brain, you have to have super memory to get dialogue exactly right. Savant-like memory, you know.
With the "Gloria" theme & opening credits, I remembered a station wagon, but not white in color, or in the form of a taxi. In my recollection, Sally Struthers was apparently driving the car, as I had her getting out and slamming the door, then charging toward the house--not standing still with her son and looking at it. But the refrain: "GLooor-ia...GLooor-ia..." I've sang in my head many, many times over the years. YouTube has done it again! Isn't it the greatest thing since sliced bread?
BURGess MEREDITH as Dr. WILLARD ADAMS could relate to the "amalgamation" theme, which tends to suggest a clash between our real-life world and the fictional world of television. But you have to go backward and forward in time from 2009 to 1982-83, when "Gloria" aired AND hook into the "morning broadcasting" theme. On the network level, character name Dr. WILLARD Adams could remind of NBC "Today" show weatherman WILLARD SCOTT, whose surname, ADAMs could evoke the progenitor of mankind, ADAM
BURGess MEREDITH could remind that in 2006, MEREDITH VieIRA became "Today" co-anchor, which still has regular appearances by WILLARD SCOTT (whose surname evokes SCOTTISH Rites) with the birthday & wedding anniversary rollcall sponsored by SMUCKers. Lou Richards as CLARK V. Uhley could link to local morning broadcasting through WTVD (VHF 11), the DurHAM, NC affiliate for ABC. The morning anchor fixture there for almost two decades is John CLARK, matching the first name of character CLARK V. Uhley
Lou Richards (as CLARK V. Uhley) is seen wagging his finger at :32 in a chastising, "got that load" manner. The clock over his shoulder shows "straight" hands at 9 & 3 o'clock. His "CHECKerborad" shirt collar could link to orchestrated dependence & "time rollback" targeting. If he was wagging his finger at Gloria BUNKer in a chastising manner, it fits nicely with the character's strident, pro-Women's Liberation persona for comedic possibilities. sALLy STRUThers--is like a HER STRUTTING her stuff
Christian Jacobs, (Joey Stivic), was born Jan. 11, 1972 in REXburg, the seat of MADISON County, Idaho. Other towns in the county include SUGAR City (could link to SUGAR as pejorative for gays) and THORNTON--which is unrelated to 241-20-7353 or 578-52-3300--despite 2008 Republican V. P. nominee, Sarah Louise Heath Palin being born in SANDpoint--seat of BONNer County, Idaho. Palin's birthday (b. 2/11/64) comes exactly one month after Christian jaCOBs's. Bonner borders Shoshone, which has BURKE
Character name Gloria BUNKer has surname BUNKer, beginning BUNK & possibly reminding of military sleeping accommodation, BUNK. That "Gloria" aired in 1982-83 is unrelated to the month of MAY & cover photo of Lake DAWSON at MoRAINe View State Recreation Area on the 2006 "Wild & Scenic ILLINOIS". Photos in the calendar were taken by WILLARD cLAY, who isn't "Today" show weatherman WILLARD SCOTT. The October photo of DIXON Springs State Park fits nicely with "Gloria" & 1982-83 6th grade teachers
SHOshone County, IdaHO is unrelated to colorful scribes honoring pioneering black journalist & anti-LYNCHING crusader IDA B. Wells in PALINdrome 1991. SHOShone County has AVERY, while bordering BONNer has HOPE, EAST HOPE, DOVER, KOOTenai, OLDtown--but is unrelated to SHOShana NyREE Johnson (b. 01/18/73), who became the first female P.O.W. of African descent during the 2003 IRAq war. Fellow P.O.W., PFC JESSICA DAWN LYNCH (b. 04/26/83) was part of Johnson's U.S. Army 507th Maintenance Company
Was Christian Jacobs supposed to be "Little Joey"?
