Hey mate! Iam trying double bass and i can get up to your speed too... but the problem is that i cant start the speed when i want it to... it just happens sometimes... and most of the time i hit both pedals at the same time... only if i really concentrate it sometimes happens that both pedals go like RLRLRLRLRLR .... i guess it's all about practise.... i also just use my reflex in the foot... i don't really try to controll the feet... i gues Iam doing it wrong : / can you controll every kick
You sir are INCORRECT on the notion that it is all STRICTLY in the Ankles... Proper and GOOD sounding double bass is using your legs AND your Ankles for POWER!!! you wouldnt be able to hear the bass if you were playing with a full band... that is why you integrate the LEGS for more power... ankles are basically used as a ball and socket contraption for tranfering power. :D
hey i have been focusing on my double bass for over a year now. and my teacher said to twitch as fast as you can to strengthen your ankles and then to play 8th notes in each foot, then combining them together for double bass. At this stage if i warm my left foot up (twitching) for a minute i can go pretty damn fast. But i have noticed that my legs feel tense, but my main concern is that i find it hard to play (100BPM) basic double kick patterns. How can i strengthen and gain control like you do?
dude this is the most usefull double bass video i've seen so far. everbody is talking about what kind of pedals, heel up, swivel, spring tension, but that never helped me out. i just can't get much faster then 120bpm. i started to practice this rightaway, it feels weird in the beginning cause i have not so much power, but i comes with time i quess
I can use my ankles easily like that but doing it with both legs like RLRL is impossible, my legs go at the same time and it's no good. I learned to use the ankle in few weeks but now I haven't made any progress in one year. Did you have problems with that(the RLRL thing) also?

I can go as fast as you using my whole leg, I just can't get that damn ankle swivel technique down. I have seemed to reach my max speed, I use 10 pound ankle weights and everything and no faster.
I can do that vibrating thing with one foot but if I do it with 2 they go at the same time and it's basicly just 1 foot. I have tried and tried but I just can't make it go RLRLRL for over 2 secs or so. Does anyone no how to solve this, practice drives me nuts but it's the only way right? And how should I keep my spings? Thanks for any answers.

you should know that its proven that the swivel technique from an average of 20-30 years after doing it, causes long term damage to your ankles. no jk
@tmendoza619 very clean playing, I like it a lot. good explanations too. by the way, do you sometimes feel pain in the knees ? :D (sometimes I do, though I'm far from being as fast as you are. it tends to hold me back from progressing.)
@tmendoza619 watch george kollias's video about swivel technique. if you do it right you wont get f'd up. if its hurting you to play it, then your doing it wrong, if its not hurting, your probably fine
@vamsterr Its hurting because you're muscles aren't used to that and its more like working out and being sore than pulling a muscle and being in pain :/
@tmendoza619 let me be a little more specific. if your kneese are hurting(which they never should) then your doing it wrong :P as i said, look at his video on it, he says how he went to several specialists for advice.
@baronofhell08 huh. I don't think many people even did the swivel teqnique 20 yrs ago. I know no one did 30 years ago really so who are these ppl that were harmed>
@baronofhell08 If you were observant, you would have seen that he ISN'T using the Swivel technique. I suggest you watch other vids on Swivel Technique to Clarify.
hey dude, are u using a pearl double bass pedal? cuz it looks lik one. I heard u say that ur left foot has become stronger than ur right and that has become the same situation for me, is ur left pedal harder to hit than ur right? wats weird is my left leg/foot use to be the week one and now its my right,
yeah they're pearl eliminators. yeah im obviously right handed/footed but when i was training my left leg i was using full motion and my ankle muscles followed and got stronger, but now im effecient in bith ankles :)
Do you have tips on building endurance under ankle motion, like, 180 bpm and under? I have the hardest time holding leg motion particularly at around 140 bpm for more than a minute, and I haven't seemed to be able to hold more than that for a couple months. @baronofhell08 knees not ankles the ankles are in normal motion with swivel you knees have to absorb the side to side motion witch causes the damage
pnutskater96 1 year ago
@baronofhell08 thats only if you kick your heels out really far
TommyOwnzU 1 year ago
@baronofhell08 It puts no stress on the ankle as much as regular playing does. It could howver damage the knee, where the actual pivoting happens.
