The allaince system was terrible back then. Serbain nationalists with aid by the serbian government murdered the Archuke and his pregnant wife sophie and a few months later everyone wnats to turn on Austria-Hungary and Germany when it was Serbian nationalists and a nosey Czar who couldn't mind his damn business. Germany was in a way a victim that was forced to use agressive offensive actions due to the foolishness of everyone ganging up on them when Germany simply was avenging the murders.
No wonder Americans took a back seat to international affairs during both world wars...at least until unrestricted submarine warfare and Pearl Harbor.
