the concerto itself is not too hard to play (but still, it is quite a challenge, at least for me; of course for miss Argerich it is only a warm-up), but the energy she puts in it is absolutely awesome!
I don't think she liked the pace and the lack of emphasis that the conductor wanted. In the end, she looked a bit upset. Still - she was as good as it could get with Kord.
The conductor couldn't handle her tempos and energy plus the orchestra is just not good - made a lot of the concerto simply sound frantic. Still, she's amazing even when she's not at her best!
@windstorm1000 This is Argerich's style. Listen to her famous recording of Rach 3 if you really wish to appreciate her style. She has so much energy and confidence but usually adheres to the rest of the orchestra.
@Teregliff16 It was the opening concerto to the 1980's Chopin competition; The same competition she were awarded by the first prize in 1957 :D. Search on YouTube, you'll find it! Enjoy it, A+, Dani
@chipncharge94 well, IMHO, the famous octaves are the simplier parts of the movement (I've made it to play them, so it cannot be so difficult :-) ), the octaves at 6:04 or 6:10 are much much more difficult, and those we can see :-D
I don't care what nationality Martha is, I could listen to her all day - a genius in my view. Tchaikovsky's first is my all time favourite piece of music and she plays it beautifully. Wish I could play that fast!! Bravo Martha xx
..and that Licad girl is good but she doesn't hold a candle to Argerich playing any piece.
Argerich is great in the tradition of Rachmaninoff, Levine, Richter to name a few. There's something so natural, so instantaneous with complete abandonment that they have that others simply don't have.

another heartless performance. c'mon martha. nobody was trying to chase you. what were you trying to prove? yes, you can play fast. we all see that. but where is the beef????after you finished playing all i had is an empty feeling like nothing really happened. you should organize club of you, dimitris sgouras and lang(bang bang)lang. you can name it, the speedster club. no soul, just pure speed. i wonder who will take the prize for being the fastest?
@korglove "what were you trying to prove? yes, you can play fast. we all see that. but where is the beef?" She was playing it Allegro CON FUOCO (with energy/fire).
People who readily equate speed with heartlessness are rather dull. It's your opinion whether you like or dislike this performance, but it's hard to deny that it's one of the most exciting/energetic.
@th3wing3dpaint3r Nahh I disagree. Just because they're octaves doesn't mean they can't be musical. Hate to say it, but this is probably the worst version of octaves I have heard of hers (and they remind me of Lang Lang's GAH!) - and I am a die hard Martha fan! Her 2001 version of these octaves is the best, and remind me quite a bit of Horowitz's (though it's all personal opinion, I suppose).
@th3wing3dpaint3r I completely agree with you. Playing a piece "faster than usual" doesn't necessarily make it lacking with emotion or mechanical. Critics of Argerich need not analyze her playing by parts and bits but rather listen, synthesize and just take it as a whole. This I think is the right approach to any art form after all. And no matter how others dislike Argerich's fast tempo, no one can deny that speed in itself is an important foundation of piano technique.
@mb7668 Seems to me the few missed notes at 3:49 are due to the orchestra not keeping up with her in the molto piu mosso and making her lose concentration for a second. Getting out of synch in a passage like that really messes with your head. She bashes out the accents desperately trying to show the conductor where the beat is and then just gives up and relaxes into his tempo.
I think Martha Argerich played this piece well, however it was a little too fast. This is supposed to be "fast and animated". I think that this piece will sound less agressive and more animated if it is slowed down a little more. Martha also played a few wrong notes, so her accuracy could improve also.
At this level of musicianship, it's pretty much irrelevant whether the musician is a man or woman - there aren't many of either out there who can play at this caliber. Horowitz could. Argerich can. Perhaps a few others as well. But there are only a few pianists out there who have piano playing down to an art AND a science simultaneously, without sacrificing either. She appears to be one of them.
@BenMcCormack91 well said. her technique is certainly worked out, and appears so controlled and deliberate. science, indeed. which serves the needs of music making.
Then why don't you write Martha and tell her the conductor failed to bring out the full orchestral possibilities? Maybe she can replay it for you with a fuller orchestra!
truly amazing....a 15 year old couldn't play this better than one of the finest pianists/musicians ever, you moron...sounds oriental...hate to say it, but they're infamous for their technical ability and utter lack of musicianship...just look at lang lang
I agree with your opinion that 1012903 is an ignoramus; but I wish you didn't have to be so blunt towards oriental pianists. It's true; a great deal of us have little or no expression and need a lot of coaching to give our pieces life. But you can't say that they're entirely without expression. And Lang Lang happens to be something of...overexpressive? Many reviews detail his overexaggerated contrasts and general playing style.
And look at Li Yundi - after first prize was not awards for some years at the International Chopin Competition, he took first prize in 2000. And he has achieved critical acclaim since then.
Please don't take offense at my words, if they sound so...I just write kind of funny. This is all just my humble opinion, and I might add that I myself am a failed pianist. My technique is OK, but expression.....people egg me when I go on stage.
Yes it is true that there are lots of Asian pianists whose playing is very mechanical but there are lots of musical ones too. A quarter of the worlds population live in China. There are millons of musicians there so surely a good number of them are musical! You can't just say that Asian people are a race of mechanical musicians. Some good examples wre Li Yundi and Dang Thai Son
@tomargerich66 i think that's a bit too harsh and offensive. although i am asian myself and i do agree with you, because i avoid listening to asian pianists and lean more on the "european" style, i think it's really harsh to say that. Pretty racist too. I do agree that lang lang is quite overrated, but don't judge the whole race based on one person. I know alot of asian pianists that don't play the "asian style". But i do admit that i don't look up to them musically/pianistically.
@Jasoconth lol that's just bullcrap. Tell me, can you hear the difference when Tchaik 1 plays on the radio? Do you go, "oh, that's DEFINITELY a European style right there"? So many people argue about this whole Asian-European style but do not have any idea what the difference is. When you hear only the music, you won't bet a dollar on it. Ethnicity doesn't matter. Each individual is different. GET. OVER. IT.

Bo an Lu plays way better he is in my school and i think that he is awesome at playing this piece. He is only 15 and already playing this piece Wow. I admire him.
Musical performance can be divided into two categories. The first category includes musicians like Argerich, Cziffra, Liszt, who are determined to make us aware of their relationship with their instrument. The second category includes musicians who try to bypass the whole question of the instrument and create the illusion of a direct link between themselves and the music and help the listener to achieve a sense of involvement with the music itself. The perfect example of that Sviatoslav Richter.
yes it seems too fast too me too, but who's to say that is not how "con fuoco" was intended. I hate when people fall into copying tempo's phrasing etc like all the recordings they've heard. At least this is unique.
What is an escape running? I bet you can't play it that fast and hear every note you're playing. Martha, however, can hear and listen to each and every note. That's what separates her from the rest. Now, joke's on you! And yes, it is indeed con fuoco, not con moderato.
noone has mentioned con moderato. I know con fuoco is written, but you can play con fuoco without rush. And I think Martha plays for the audience not for herself. It's fine if she enjoys it this way, but if the audience (me, at this very moment) doesn't, then the audience's gonna win. It always does. Still, it's ok if you like it this way, having different taste is something that makes the world go further.
tell me, what is the tempo marking for this movement? and then tell me within that tempo indication where would you place your metronome? it's a LITTLE fast, but she's not out of bounds at all. Her dynamics are fine as well. The dynamics only fall below mf on 4 occasions in the entire mvmt. (p three times and one pp).
I wish there were better quality videos of Martha, on the whole. I have a number of her recordings (not DVD, unfortunately) & admire her immensely besides being a huge fan of Valentina Lisitsa, who has some very hi qual videos on Youtube right now.
Course she plays it well by anyone's standards. I just find Gilels' sound more satisfying, personally. He gets deep into the keys and produces a rich tone.
Argerich has also a beautiful tone and plays with great feeling. Anyway I can understand your preference for Gilels. I like him very much in Brahm's concerto no.2.
If you truly love to make music then NEVER give up. There are NO good teachers. Tchaikovsky received an F in composition for this concerto. Research it! Liszt said that the artist must FIND HIS OWN way. If your teacher does not treat you like gold then find another or teach yourself. A secret of the pros is no CAFFIENE. Believe it or not.
No caffiene is better than two extra hours of Czerny.
If you think that 3rd movement is easy, try those two-hand double octives around 5:10, fast, and see how many notes you hit incorrectly. If you can do it, you are not playing it correctly, fast like she does. Performances don't get better than hers.
This piano concerto is not the most difficult to play but the octave passages in this third movement are incredibly hard to play at even a moderately fast speed. good to know that someone else recognizes good technique, ;-) Argerich is phenomenal.
@Hervinbalfour For sure. Brahms #2 is the most difficult one but Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 has got the most uncovered and dangerous octaves ever written. Martha 5:02 legendary!
for those of u people who judge argerich's playing, think about these:
1. she is argerich, she holds many jury seats in elite competitions
2. she is argerich, she can turn the music sheets of this concerto upside down & play it if she want bc she can.
3. she is argerich, who won the chopin compt., her juries (composed by renown pianists) accepted her performance. u r not a renown pianist& that's y u r not the jury of Chopin compt therefore dont judge bc she knows what she's doing
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
She takes this way too fast and doesn't allow for the nuance and brilliance of either the piano or the orchestral parts to shine through. This was written as a piece of *music,* not a tool for show-off pianists who are more concerned with how fast they can play the notes accurately.
the conductor starts off the orchestra with a certain tempo, and then a few seconds later, when Argerich starts playing, she completely changed the tempo.

She is always too fast...
persdchiu 2 years ago
i agree, it is on the quick side, but still very good.

Horowitz/Toscanini is better!!!!!
lisztbest 2 years ago
yes, way too fast... cannot enjoy each note. It's not con fuoco, rather like an escape running.
thege6 2 years ago
yes it seems too fast too me too, but who's to say that is not how "con fuoco" was intended. I hate when people fall into copying tempo's phrasing etc like all the recordings they've heard. At least this is unique.
davidbaker03 2 years ago
the last two runs from 6:05 are really good, though!
thege6 2 years ago
thege6,
What is an escape running? I bet you can't play it that fast and hear every note you're playing. Martha, however, can hear and listen to each and every note. That's what separates her from the rest. Now, joke's on you! And yes, it is indeed con fuoco, not con moderato.
hideaway3 1 year ago 2
Dear hideaaway3,
noone has mentioned con moderato. I know con fuoco is written, but you can play con fuoco without rush. And I think Martha plays for the audience not for herself. It's fine if she enjoys it this way, but if the audience (me, at this very moment) doesn't, then the audience's gonna win. It always does. Still, it's ok if you like it this way, having different taste is something that makes the world go further.
thege6 1 year ago
I agree. Martha can play the fastest without sacrificing clarity. Others who does end up sounding blurred.

She will never be forgotten as one of the best pianists in the world.

marginally too fast for me, some bits seemed rushed!

Her third movement is better than the first. Cliburn and Gilels capture the emotion of the first movement far better

it should not be played this fast and with little change in dynamics no matter how brilliant the pianist.
c`mon guys!
jhagenson 3 years ago
tell me, what is the tempo marking for this movement? and then tell me within that tempo indication where would you place your metronome? it's a LITTLE fast, but she's not out of bounds at all. Her dynamics are fine as well. The dynamics only fall below mf on 4 occasions in the entire mvmt. (p three times and one pp).

Someone find and kill the f#$%ing camera man or woman.

Yes please. Why didn't they have the camera on her hands during the octaves??

I wish there were better quality videos of Martha, on the whole. I have a number of her recordings (not DVD, unfortunately) & admire her immensely besides being a huge fan of Valentina Lisitsa, who has some very hi qual videos on Youtube right now.

Incrediable technique.Musically, it sucked rather grandly. Van Cliburn,so much better.Oh hell, Cliburn is Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto numero uno.
karljeff14 3 years ago
Well, she's no Gilels/Richter/Solomon. Great fingers though.
micheldvorsky 3 years ago
Of course, she is Martha Argerich, and she plays this concerto as well, if not better than all the (great) pianists you mention !
rigel48 3 years ago 4
Course she plays it well by anyone's standards. I just find Gilels' sound more satisfying, personally. He gets deep into the keys and produces a rich tone.
micheldvorsky 3 years ago
Argerich has also a beautiful tone and plays with great feeling. Anyway I can understand your preference for Gilels. I like him very much in Brahm's concerto no.2.
rigel48 3 years ago
Well..she plays much more better than Gilels here.
Ellinidara 2 years ago
micheldvorsky,
No she's not Gilels/Richter/Solomon.Thank God, because Richter, for one, couldn't play a correct note to save his life. Come on; you're full of it.

Horowitz and Argerich have the best feeling for this concerto. Van Cliburn is very good but not better.
rigel48 3 years ago 2
I think that Horowitz/Toscanini is the definite recording of this concerto to date. Of course Martha and Emil are amazing too!

Argerich ALWAYS plays this movement very fast.
The conductor and orchestra didn't catch up with her.
They needed a lot of rehearsals.

PianoClassMan 3 years ago
She is another marvelous pianist. What talent.
If you think that 3rd movement is easy, try those two-hand double octives around 5:10, fast, and see how many notes you hit incorrectly. If you can do it, you are not playing it correctly, fast like she does. Performances don't get better than hers.
Simply marvelous.
26294Gib 3 years ago 4
This piano concerto is not the most difficult to play but the octave passages in this third movement are incredibly hard to play at even a moderately fast speed. good to know that someone else recognizes good technique, ;-) Argerich is phenomenal.
Hervinbalfour 3 years ago 23
@Hervinbalfour For sure. Brahms #2 is the most difficult one but Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 has got the most uncovered and dangerous octaves ever written. Martha 5:02 legendary!
iguarni 1 year ago
@iguarni
NOT necessarily, what about the octave passage at the end of Liszt's 1st piano concerto in E flat major? sounds equally nightmarish to me!
robfuturemd 1 year ago
@robfuturemd it's not that hard lool...that's not liszt's hardest octave frenzy lool

for those of u people who judge argerich's playing, think about these:
1. she is argerich, she holds many jury seats in elite competitions
2. she is argerich, she can turn the music sheets of this concerto upside down & play it if she want bc she can.
3. she is argerich, who won the chopin compt., her juries (composed by renown pianists) accepted her performance. u r not a renown pianist& that's y u r not the jury of Chopin compt therefore dont judge bc she knows what she's doing

Yefim Bronfman plays it much better (from my honest point of view). I uploaded Yefim's version, you can watch it and comment...
However, great Martha Argerich! Bravo...

She takes this way too fast and doesn't allow for the nuance and brilliance of either the piano or the orchestral parts to shine through. This was written as a piece of *music,* not a tool for show-off pianists who are more concerned with how fast they can play the notes accurately.

As for me, too sharp.

OCTAVES!

the conductor starts off the orchestra with a certain tempo, and then a few seconds later, when Argerich starts playing, she completely changed the tempo.
foodmore 3 years ago
Yes, she obviously wanted it faster. Phenomenal piano playing, whatever the tempo.
