This part of the line never runs on the weekends. It only runs Monday-Friday. In addition, more than half of all the trains that go west of Dover end in Lake Hopatcong. Some continue on and end in Mt. Olive, such as the one in this video. Only a few continue all the way to Hackettstown.
No problem. I'm pretty sure that this part of the line is also owned or partially owned by Norfolk Southern. Beyond Hackettstown, the tracks continue as a freight line, and it eventually connects to the Lehigh Line down in Phillipsburg. The funny thing is that when an NJT train ends in Hackettstown, it just sits there for about 15-20 minutes. It then either heads east in revenure service, or simply deadheads to Hoboken.
That might be. The only other thing I can think of is that it was from some freight train on this very line. That doesn't seem possible, since there aren't any sidings to let anything pass by until Port Morris.
While I will say that it is a good horn, I would not say that it is the best K5LA I've ever heard. I love the K5LAs on 4100, 4108, 4145, 4146, 4801, 4803, 5029, and 6000.
It was probably from H02 on its way back from Washington, following this train. I'm gonna guess it was either blowing for a crossing, or answering the 6059
yes, but i believe that they always leave Dover around the same time, because they need to avoid NJT. So I don't know how a 3 hour difference comes in...
Yeah, Dover is a great place for railfanning because of that. Unfortunately, Dover itself is kind of seedy. Then again, alot of railroad towns are like that.
whats that other horn in the backround?
Railfan108 10 months ago
@Railfan108 seems to be a Leslie RS3L

Ive been to this station ,but never seen this train
ned987 2 years ago
cool. I never been to this station before so it was a treat for me.
jpaufsc 2 years ago
Wait, so that line gets used once a day?
johnyboy087 2 years ago
no, several times.
jpaufsc 2 years ago
ok thanks, i thought you meant once a day
johnyboy087 2 years ago
I see what made you think it was once a day and I changed it.
jpaufsc 2 years ago
i thought they changed ends in hackettstown??
i guess i was wrong

I thought they did too, but they don't go all the way on weekends.

Thanks a lot for the info. This clears up a lot of things for me and many others.

When I filmed this I sat there for a while too. I waited about 20 minutes waiting for it to leave.
jpaufsc 2 years ago
I see. BTW, while it was leaving, I think I heard another horn that sounded like some kind of Leslie. Do you have any clue where that came from?
GenesisSanctuary 2 years ago
I heard that too. I was puzzled when I heard it because I didn't see any other tracks around. I think the horn may have been mounted on a car.
jpaufsc 2 years ago

GenesisSanctuary 2 years ago
I think the most probable answer is a car due to the fact there is no other tracks near these.
jpaufsc 2 years ago
I think you're right.
GenesisSanctuary 2 years ago
I agree.
jpaufsc 2 years ago
BTW, that Comet V has a really awesome horn. 6059 is one of the best Comet Vs of all, along with 6000, 6004, and 6016.
GenesisSanctuary 2 years ago
Yeah, I fell in love with the horn at first blast. It is the best K5LA I've ever heard.

I'll have to search for those to see how they sound.

ns3010 2 years ago
Probably. I didn't think of that.
jpaufsc 2 years ago
I see. How often does freight run on that line anyway?
GenesisSanctuary 2 years ago
H-02 runs M-F. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, it runs west (from Dover) to Washington, and east, to the Boonton Line on Tuesday and Thursday.
I remember once seeing freight on a Saturday, but it was probably an extra.
ns3010 2 years ago
I see. Do they run early in the morning or late at night?
GenesisSanctuary 2 years ago
Always during daylight, but times vary.
For example, I once saw them returing to Dover (they were almost there, ready to drop the cars and tie up) around noon.
But one other time, I saw them in Mount Olive (at Saxton Falls) after 5 on their way back to Dover. So there's no set times, only days.
ns3010 2 years ago
Well that figures. Thanks for the info.:)
GenesisSanctuary 2 years ago
No prob.
You'd probably have to station yourself at one place all day if you want to see it.
I'm not sure why the times are different, though. Maybe it has something to do with the amount of switching for the day.
It has nothing to do with what day it is, though, since I've seen it at two completely different times, both on days where it runs to Washington.
ns3010 2 years ago
Yeah, that usually is how frieght trains operate.
GenesisSanctuary 2 years ago
yes, but i believe that they always leave Dover around the same time, because they need to avoid NJT. So I don't know how a 3 hour difference comes in...
ns3010 2 years ago
In that case, it sounds like Dover is the baest place to see it.
GenesisSanctuary 2 years ago
Probably. Then you also get all the Morristown Line (MidTOWN Direct, as well as Hoboken) and Montclair-Boonton Line stuff, too.
ns3010 2 years ago
Yeah, Dover is a great place for railfanning because of that. Unfortunately, Dover itself is kind of seedy. Then again, alot of railroad towns are like that.
