Just a gentle note - Wikipedia is not always the best sort of "final word" on things. I have corrected things about family members there. This was definitely the original. Thank you for posting! :)
This is the version my dad knows considerably more, making me think airplay favored the Hillside Singers, but sales favored the New Seekers, which consequently went 6 notches higher to #7 and sell a million.
The New Seekers did the Coca Cola add song. It was a radio add in the US then on the TV add. Unknown English girl Linda Neary mimed the song on the opening. There was 1000s of requests to buy the Coca Cola song. Coca Cola had a non-branded version of the song to run with the ad. The New Seekers were booked up not able to record the new version, so a bunch of sessions singers, named the Hillside Singers after the ad did. it. Then the New Seekers recorded it which was a bigger hit
@NearAbbeyRoad Wikipedia on the Hillside Singers says that they recorded the original Coke ad, then later recorded this "Teach the World to Sing" version. Maybe the New Seekers recorded a later version of the Coke ad, in addition to the "Teach the World to Sing" version.
"McCann Erickson had written the jingle 'I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke' for Coca-Cola, and had sought to have The New Seekers sing it, but The New Seekers could not fit the project into their schedule and turned it down. McCann Erickson then got in touch with producer Al Ham, who then put together a group of singers for the project (including his wife, Mary Mayo, and their daughter Lori)." Continued in next post...
@juslookin3 Wikipedia entry for Hillside Singers continued: "The commercial began airing late in 1971 and was extremely popular, convincing Ham to rewrite the song as "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" and to record an album and a Christmas record; the single hit #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #5 on the Adult Contemporary chart, which convinced The New Seekers to issue it as a single as well."
I'd like to buy the world a Coke, and keep it company. Coca-Cola, it's the real thing.
