Halogenfox it is wonderful when the power of music ( which has a timeless quality) moves us to tears, particularly when we associate it with a person we love or a special occasion. Music has a healing aspect. I remember as a student being booked to sing the Tenor in Stainer's Crucifixion. My Grandad had often sung the Baritone role and one year earlier he had heard me do the work and cried his heart out. This time he was dying in hospital and it became a special performance of this moving piece.
A great moment in British singing history. Definitive in every way. Elgar's song cycle is sublime. Dame Janet , a God-given talent and a great human being. The orchestra under Barbirolli is magnificent. Do try to listen to the whole group of songs.
@Tenortalker I listen to this particular recording very frequently - it was a favourite of my late father, and it has become a favourite of mine as well - even though I can't listen to it without bawling like a baby - lol
This is so beautiful......thanks dear Rose P. xo xo

Janet Baker sings it beautifully. Even so, I don't think Clara Butt's recording has ever been bettered.
