I highly recommend covering batteries with dry rags or suitable material. Wet if exposed to welding sparks or slag. While working in close proximity to large Batt. in semi tractor at waist level, I caused an arc with wrench.Batt exploded violently.Heavy cables(4/0) atop batt kept large piece from my face but small ones found their target. Batt case had hairline crack in top,was venting. Have H20+baking soda at hand. Wear goggles.I personally pray now before I work on one!Your call.H2SO4=bad news
SLA Batteries are never fully charged. The chargers are designed to keep the voltage below the level required to release gas. During discharge the rate of discharge the load is designed not to cuase gas release. By discharging the way you are You are infact releasing large amounts of H and O2. This is a very explosive and exothermic reaction. Your are very lucky. My advice is dont push your luck any further.
Idiot, these are SLA batteries. SEALED lead acid. They have caps over the plates to prevent any air from entering/leaving.
Hell, hydrogen is released DURING charging. Not so much during use bro. I'd be willing to hold a lighter an inch away from these batteries while charging...
It's the NON sealed (car batteries, the ones with VENTS) that you have to be wary of.
wht is with everyone free handing it? the only person i kno that can free hand weld has been welding for about 40 years and all he does is stick weld , y dont u mount urself on the table and take ur other hand and put it by the piece of metal and lay the rod on ur hand and get into a comfy position and i PROMIS ur beads will come out 100x better, i dnt mean to be rude or anything cuz everyone has their own way of welding , but give it a try

I'm sure the batteries get real hot, maybe submerge them halfway in some cold water to increase uptime?

if you wire batteries in series; you will spark either side clamp when you try to connect it as ground

what about flamable gases from the batteries? Would suck to explode in your face ! Good Luck! You can get a good cheap wirefeed welder at walmart

6 x 12? 72 volts?!!!!
Dude... that was cooking. Those are the 4.2 amp dry cells though right?
So what is the fix to not cook / pop the batts?
stevebigler 3 years ago
Be careful: if there is no current limiting, the batteries may overheat and/or be damaged.

Yes, one poped and stopped working, I think there is a fusable link inside each battery.
