i have a question that i haven't found in the google summer of code ginourmous FAQ, do you need a team to apply? can't you just apply if you're a student (all by yourself) and want to work in a project? the faq says you have to propose an idea, what if you just want to follow others idea and work with theirs and with them.
You do realize that it is a global program, right? It is not US-specific:
"Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought together nearly 2500 successful student participants and 2500 mentors from 98 countries worldwide, all for the love of code."
yes, it means more freedom, for anyone who knows how to program. Since you have the source code you know what you got and you can customize the code to your preferences, heck, you can even copy some of the code and use it in your own software, as long as it doesn't go past a certain limit.
It can also be free as in beer but not necessarily, it is possible to sell open source software, as long as it comes with the source code when you sell it.
It's the difference between "free" programs like Internet Explorer and "free" programs like Firefox. People are free to modify and redistribute Firefox to their liking, but Microsoft has a tight rein on their source code.
Free as in freedom - When you recieve the software you are entitled to , study, modify and redistribute the program without restriction. You may still pay for the original copy (although a friend who has payed could give it to you without charge).
Free as in beer - You can obtain the software without charge. It does not imply any of the freedoms listed above although many free-as-in-freedom applications are also free as in beer.

I find it slightly funny that he doesn't have a good open source replacement for the PowerPoint abomination.

The desciption on the graphs make no sense, "passion" should be on the x-axis and "# developers" on y-axis otherwise it doesn't make any sense.
jofr23 2 years ago 6
Haha yea, I noticed that
mm658 2 years ago
no, the passion depend on the number of developper, so he's good.
isra017 1 year ago
I was about to write that as well.
It's not that the more developers you have working on a project, the more passion until it starts to get too big as the graph implies.
Otherwise GSOC would be rubbish because you are only one developer and hence have no passion!

@jofr23
it makes some sense it means that as the developers increase the passion decreases!hahahhah

"Free as in freedom, not as in beer" ... What is that suposed to mean? That open source means more freedom? For who? And why not free beer also?
