one last comment about this priceless interview. What blows me away about the original MO was the infinite blues vocabulary they literally "fused" with some of great jazz harmonies and time signatures,....really this interview is literally priceless.
As the story goes Miles Davis was so impressed with Machine Gun that that was the reason for unleashing Mclaughlin on RIght Off and the box set of Jack Johnson. personally my main regret was that Hendrix died right before he was scheduled to jam with Miles. man, that's a sad bit of history to think Hendrix would have played with Miles. as for Hendrix playing with Mclaughlin, I would give anything to hear Hendrix have played the MO classics YouKnow YouKnow and Miles Beyond, slower stuff!
@anthropomorphicide Something else you might be interested in - on the 'Jan Hammer - Sister Andrea - 2 Versions' video someone provided a link to a Jan Hammer interview in which he mentioned that Hendrix sometimes dropped by to listen to some of the jam sessions Jan Hammer had with (flute player) Jeremy Steig . Later Tommy Bolin joined these sessions but that was after Hendrix' death.
Mclauglin and Hendrix, I try to listen them everyday. I'm with you, they're in a league of their own. the first time I heard Mclaughlin, I had no idea who was playing guitar, not mentioned in the credits on the Miles LP Soundtrack for Jack Johnson. IMHO, the Mclaughlin solo at the very end of Right Off was were as close as they got to playing in a similar way. I've heard it both ways, that solo was Hendrix inspired and the opposite with Machine Gun. either way. Mclaughlin and Hendrix!
mclaughin and hendrix are my favorite players along with a young segovia. hendrix was a force of nature and mclaughin is one of a very select few jazz guitarists i can listen too for an hour or so. both very exciting and interesting players.
Wheres the Hendrix part he talks about i cant find it? Oh i hear the Hendrix shit now,''Damn he did the feedback just like the record on foxy lady..Jimi's feed back makes little Richards big toe shoot up in his boot..John McLaughlin fucking shreds! I mean he sounds like he has the strongest fingers in guitar? Al di meola looks like his favorite pupil when they jam together..Like the old blind man kung fu,' He says,' ahh my favorite pupil, come closer so i may take a look at you? He can see Cain.
This was a great program (my brother taped it). For those that don't know (Aussies especially), I have a John McLaughlin channel - 35+ videos (mostly rarities).

John McGlaughlin is the mother of all guitar players, and is also one of the world's greatest musicians.
