Gran video, ojala mas Ham radio operators, compartan este tipo de experiencias. Great video, I wish more Ham radio operators share their experiences with us.
But poor Jimmy! He doesn't have a proper callsign. On behalf of my fellow hams in the US 9th call district, I apologize for the oversight that stuck him with W9SR3. After all this years, he still believes he made contact with colombia.
Once upon a time, hams were unique. Now they are clearly at least 20 years behind current communications technology.
Another drawback of ham radio is the "hand holding" control of operations. Even though "wireless" is radio, hams cannot even put up any wifi oriented systems, due to laws written in the 1950's!
Every ham wants to "help humanity", but only from the "comfort" of their musty basement. "On the ground" involvement is not a reality...
'Rafmanne', you need to seriously get a clue and educate yourself. 'When all else fails' is still true today. There was massive cell phone failure, and departmental communication problems during and after 9/11, and hundreds of Amateur Radio operators set up emergency units in and around 'ground zero'. They handled critical emergency traffic between emergency responders, aid units, and other government units via 2 way radio using repeaters when ALL ELSE FAILED!
'Rafmanne', once again, you show how deluded you are. It is FACT that Amateur Radio operators set up emergency communications near 'ground zero', and helped coordinate key communications after cell systems failed completely in lower Manhattan. Hams also have helped, and continue to do so, when hurricanes, tornados, floods, or other disasters occur where communication systems fail or are unavailable terrain-wise. Hams even helped with the search effort after the last shuttle blew up on re-entry.
Big effing deal. So your father spent 38 years in the NYFD. The same NYFD (and NYPD) that had massive communication failures with their radio gear and/or lack of frequency coordination on 9/11 (i'm not dissing their heroism). This was all over the news and common fact, and helped add to the necessity of Hams. You obviously have some kind of animosity against Hams, given your false negative posts. You probably think black is white and white is black. If I 'need meds', then you need a lobotomy!
"The same NYFD (and NYPD) that had massive communication failures with their radio gear and/or lack of frequency coordination on 9/11"
The radio system was designed by Communications Engineers, who were all hams... All the frequency "coordination" in the world could not have foretold of the main antenna structure being removed "terrain-wise"

'Rafmanne', you're wrong again. Not all who designed their radio systems were Hams. And the point of argument is NOT about foretelling disaster, but RESPONDING to it. Amateur Radio operators DID respond by setting up point to point, as well as repeater communications that greatly aided local and national authorities for various groups. You must have been asleep those few days. Lastly, I did not 'diss' FDNY. I was just mentioning that 38 years with FDNY had nothing to do with your argument.

There was nothing to read. The signal from the plane simply stopped, reasonable assumption would be that the plane crashed, knowing it was low on fuel.
I was ham radioamateur from 13 years old boy and I was build all my homebrew equipment in late 80ties like that boy and I can tell that Ham radio was destroyed by american fascists from ARRL and DXCC. They are commercialized and politisized that nice hobby. Today Ham radio is dead and it is not internet/celluar fones reasons, its because of people who are radioamateurs in western capitalist regime countries.
True, today ham radio can not compete with the internet or cell phones. But what it can do is supply a hands on knowledge of electronics. Those who are interested in this aspect can appreciate what can be done in amateur radio. Those who want to stare into a screen all day will be satisfied with doing that.
Now if you dont mind, I have pc boards to design, metal cabinets to fabricate, and satellites to track.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Face it, Hams are loons. Technology has left them in the dust and they did not have as big as role in the advancement of technology as they want you believe. They are good at tooting their own horn, I'll give them that. Our society no longer has any use for them. The Katrina deal outlined that very well. They can pass "Welfare messages". They have no business being in the emerg response service nor are they wanted It's only a hobby for them to talk to each other on antiquated radio equipment.
Evidently you have no idea what you're talking about. The Katrina disaster proved just the opposite is true of what you're saying. We don't use antiquated radios. I'm an active member with ARES and other emergency services which deal directly with our local fire and police departments and are used quite frequently as co-participants in disaster drills. Cell phones, telephones, and the Internet can all go down in disasters.. Ham Radio continues on, providing necessary communications.
you should all be fucking shot and bummed at dawn! may the fleas of a thousand camels infest your arseholes. Go for a walk or read a book, or better still by a fone.
Hamming was obviously not thought of as a geekfest in 1939 as it is today. It had a certain romance to it, as did broadcasting. That is what people enjoy looking back on this film.
EXCELLENT. HAPPY TO SEE THIS OLD VIDEO ON HAM RADIO. WOULDN'T IT BE NICE IF WE HAD VIDEOS OF SAY, THE SIGNING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE OR GEORGE WASHINGTON CROSSING THE DELAWARE RIVER? We all should thank those who came before us and made a positive difference.
There is a whole range of generations in ham radio, and their interest in science and invention has over the years up to today propelled many advances in engineering and technology. I might be old in your eyes at 58 but did my part in advancing various technologies, including RF communications and even music recording....my 28 gold and platinum records were in a major way contributed to by my childhood till present passion for ham radio and discovery.
yes sir,I have to agree with you, what we see today in everyday life and on our screens is nothing short of moral decay, make no wonder that youngsters turn out like they do when exposed to such sensationalism and a lack of familly values. 73's sir and good dx.

For one thing, there's echolink, which allows you to access repeaters all over the world using your computer, or use a handie talky with DTMF tones to connect a local repeater to one abroad. Folks get real impressed when you call up strangers thousands of miles away on an HT.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Pete Smith shorts. Thank you SO much for posting these.

Embarrassing, truly embarrassing. I feel sorry for these old ham guys tho still think it's 1955. Cool back then, not cool now.

This great stuff, a trifle corny by today's
standards. The receiver is a National SW-3.

yes sir,I have to agree with you, what we see today in everyday life and on our screens is nothing short of moral decay, make no wonder that youngsters turn out like they do when exposed to such sensationalism and a lack of familly values. 73's sir and good dx.
