I wondered to myself why Jim morrision was always the one to take the spotlight. i mean god damn hes a good poet and singer course. but if it werent for krieger manzarek and densmore i mean what would jim be other than a poet in a book somewhere. i dunno if its just me but id like to hear why jim is so important and hes the face of the doors.
This is not only interesting in terms of the history of the group and the songs, it's also the most instructional video on song composition for organ I've ever seen ! Really clear !
This is an incredible video...one of the greatest interviews of a rock musician I have ever seen. What strikes me the most (aside from his brilliant playing and stories of course) is the way Manzarek gives an equal plug to all his bandmates for their contributions; a rare find in the rock world or super egos and such. As successful as he has been it never seems to have gone to his head through the years and he seems truly appreciative and still humble about all this...a real classy guy!!
Do you suppose today's ROCK wannabe SUPERSTARS put songs like this together ? Ahh, NO, I don't think so. It's magic, that's what makes it a CLASSIC !!
I love Ray and the Doors in general, but try playing a J.S. Bach piece on the organ. That is true genius, both hands flying, both feet moving, and all the while conducting a choir. Now that is amazing. But old Bach doesn't have the stories to tell that old Ray does.
Manzarek Philosophy 101 @ it's best. Such a self depreciating fellow - thus what makes his words & thoughts so pleasing to the ear...< just my humble opinion.
Ray Manzarek is just living proof that the more brilliant a man is, the more humble and down to earth he will be. he is a genuine pleasure to listen to and learn from.
It is so exciting and enlightening to hear a musician open the doors (pun intended) to their musical brilliance. I personally find it absolutely fantastic to hear Ray talk about how he wrote songs like Light My Fire (or any song they ever did really) and hear what he was thinking when he wrote it and say to myself "aha, yes that is really cool". Fucking amazing!
Please God...just one day of Organ lessons with you Ray!! Please!!!! I swear I'll roll a joint for both of us Ray!!!! Oh man, just to smoke with you, and go off on a tangent about the 60's, the doors, the concerts, the energy, Jim and his antics, the stories!! You, Ray, are almost all that is left of the last modern revolution. I gotta see you in perform before you, or I, dies. Golden Scarab!!!
I never thought I'd leave a comment like this one...but...what is to dislike about this interview? the guy just gave you the keys to the fucking universe!
@ University of Cal... I am only guessin in the Oliver Stone film he was the teacher Jim walked out on...I found my Aunt Devora Von Sternberg thanks to facebook.
Love the Doors.... my great uncle was the number one inspiration(named by Ray Manzarek(you) as) in the bands music....Josef Von Sternberg(film teacher/ director) found this out through wikipedia.... pretty neat considering I idolized Morrison... I know every lyric to every poem or song long b4 I found this out.
This is when they use to have real musicians before the karaoke holocaust that we have today. Well actually it's not even karaoke as karaoke requires you to sing. It's more like lip synching karaoke. All that is required is a reality show and/or the ability to shout gibberish over other peoples recordings while you interrupt young female country singers and call yourself a genius.
Hey Ray? if you have a modicum of talent and skill, Touch is all you need to send you into stardom! and you have it. an incredibly different touch than I have. it makes songs as real as flesh.
I love when he's talking about the second verse of light my fire and says "of course death enters the equation again". Love Manzarek and Morrison with all my heart!!!
Every time I hear I song by The Doors it gives me chills up and down my entire body. No matter how many times I hear it, that feeling never goes away.
@cowboytonydee well first of all hes a genius but also i mean...think about how many times ray has had to play this...in 40 years. i mean hes gotta know it like the back of his hand
i went to a doors concert last tuesday at the norva(6-8-10) and i had to pay 50$ to meet robby kreiger and ray, but i didnt. so i ended up waiting outside the norva for 2 hours and then was told the band went out the back door to a hotel.
I love Ray so much! Such a handsome man and a joy to listen to and watch. I can't help but smile when I watch this clip. I hope I am lucky enough to meet him some day. :)
mr94hitman F**k you man. i hate people who only glorify Jim. Dont get me wrong i love ray and jim but without john and robbie there is no doors there is no lizard king there is no James Douglas Morrison
Something really sad to me is that, yes, Jim had a huge charisma, and was one of the people who brought art to rock through his poetry, but Ray, Robbie and John are awsome musicians who had to carry the curse of having played with Morrison and faced his death. It's a great experience to hear "Other Voices", "Full Circle" (except for the mosquito song) and "An America Prayer" the 3 post-Morrison albums and hear the great talent these guys had and still had. What of Jim hadn't died? Who knows.
my eyes have seen you is my fav. doors song, amazing music with robby slide guitar, ray's upbeat organ just perfect, and those are some of jim's best lyrics i think...my eyes have seen you let them photograph your soul memorize your alleys on an endless roll...now that is a line
He is a great guy. I met him at a small show in a restaurant in Port Townshend, WA. ray is an incredible story teller. How he remembers every little detail he does, i don't know.he is a great person to talk to.sort of like an old friend and he was more than happy to sign my doors cd that i had with me.
he's great''such a good storyteller too''imagine fuking playing with Jim Morrisson''& Being part of that''u can put The Doors With The Best Of All Time''
I will do ANYTHING if someone posts the notes to that version of Moonlight Drive, its way funkier than the original, and its the way he played it live, the studio version doesn't work on a Vox.
Ray Manzarek is the man. They don't come any cooler than him! Seriously whenever I have a bad day I just watch Ray and he turns my grey skies blue! He got me interested in music (Heard Riders when I was in 6th grade) And I've been Doors and Music crazy since then! Man I even took organ back up after quitting it just to play like him!
Too cool. Ray and the Doors wrote some great tunes. I love the sound of a Connie, I got a Super Connie and I love the light touch. It's different from my Hammonds but a whole lot to play. Great video!
The greatest rock and roll storyteller to ever live. There is something about his voice that just makes his stories come alive. He would be that movie father that was reading to his son at night because the boy could not sleep. And five minutes into telling the boy about that magical journey of some sort, the boy would be in la la land. Ray, your the best man...
Ray was the older and wiser, he kept em togheter when J.D could only see doom in the band and was unhappy, and when Jim was afraid to go sing in first line live, at the end Jim has become that notorious thank to Ray too, and Ray has become that notorious thanks to Jim, at the end it was a great balance mixed with great talent and open minded mentality to create the Doors and make em live till today, and tomorrow too indeed, The Doors have earned eternity
Well before talking about "tools" u need to understand that nothing happens without a reason, and that the key to success and longevity in a band, is only achievable by having different personalityes in each single band member, u need the smartass, u need the eccentric, u need the serious one, imagine having not Ray but someone else like Jim, how far would they had gone? They gone far cos there was someone to keep the chords tight, and someone trying to break those all time, and much more ...

Apparently I am the only one that thinks Ray is somewhat of a tool. Not that I don't give him his share of credit. From what I've read he was about the only thing holding the threads of the band together most of the time but I don't know how long I could stay in the room with the guy.
oliver stone made them look like stoners who never did anything good. the movie never shows any good concert scenes. ray is the second best in the doors.
I've always thought that! I've always thought Ray would be like an awesome grandpa, fun, still active, AWESOME story teller! Awesome Musician, and he dresses sssooo cool :D
Absolutely correct! Jim was the most talented of The Doors with his voice, but then Ray's keyboard lines were GENIUS! The movie made them look like a shitty band too.
@mr94hitman I hate the Oliver stone movie too but they where stoners in a way they liked to take acid and weed but it exaggerated Jim's drinking that's the problem with the film it doesn't really show Jim as Ray knew him the artist and poet
@mr94hitman I think oliver stone THINKS he made them look good. In the bonus footage on the DVD he goes off about how taking acid was a social revolution and how he was such a hippie when at that time. I think thats what this was about for him. Like with many weak people, I think the music was secondary to the drugs and the "rebellion" for him. In reality, these guys were great because they were educated, both in music and in literature, and weren't afraid of being eclectic.
Second best? Jim was a great singer and all, but even he admitted later that he didn't think he had all that much to say. Ray Manzarek was the core musical talent in the doors. His keyboard lines are easily the trademark of The Doors.
Ray, you look great in this video -- very handsome and enjoyable to watch. You are perhaps the greatest spokesman from the classic rock era -- a great showman, musician, story-teller, myth-maker, mystic, philosopher and educator. We love you and can't get enough of you no matter what subject you're discussing. Personally, I would like to hear more of your thoughts on spirituality, Eastern philosophy and the meaning of love -- those things we spent so much time contemplating in the Sixties.
I wondered to myself why Jim morrision was always the one to take the spotlight. i mean god damn hes a good poet and singer course. but if it werent for krieger manzarek and densmore i mean what would jim be other than a poet in a book somewhere. i dunno if its just me but id like to hear why jim is so important and hes the face of the doors.

oliver stone made them look like stoners who never did anything good. the movie never shows any good concert scenes. ray is the second best in the doors.

Stone is a complete ass. To the public, Morrison's image has been damaged beyond repair because of that movie.
Ray would be an awesome grandfather, and Jim (RIP!) could have been the cool, eccentric great-uncle.

thank god there is some one who thinks like me.

@mr94hitman
