Hey everybody!!! Thanks for all the comments, and visiting these pages. I have put my Funk guitar method on DVD. It is 55 minutes,NTSC format, and is just exercises and lessons on playing funk. No fluff, or wasted space. Just explaining my way of playing funk.
$10 + shipping. Message me for info on how to buy.
An idea for you in return, go crazy on your "Tags" so more people will see this video, even random shit that doesn't pertain to what you are doing like "American Idol", "Guns" and "Punched in the face during rimjob" - or whatever comes to mind! Thanks again, keep up the good work!
hahah, me too, but that is more for the crowd who is into getting punched in the face during a rimjob, anything to appeal to a variety of people, yeah?
Hi, this looks like a good lesson. Vibrato without bending, no problem for me, bending to the right pitch without vibrato, no problem either, but bending + vibrato - sounds terrible.
youtube search 'like it this way' by fleetwood mac. watch dannys vibrato--which has yet to by matched by any player, and you will soon be obsessed, which will lead you to vibratoryu heaven. I followed that path and it has paid off.
1. Play around with the angle of your left hand as you do your bends.
2. I would just try to make the note "sing" however you can do it. I don't really think any one "exercise" will do it. Put on some blues stuff and try to make the notes you play sing. Go out and get Live at the El Macambo and watch how he does this. Physically,it's either wrist or fingers-which ever you like. B.B. King,Hendrix,Clapton,Yngwie, all have different vibratos. Get some videos, and watch closely.
1.When bending, how do you prevent from getting caught in the other strings and getting unwanted noise?
2.When I bend or do vibrato, my wrist seems to tighten up and make the effect nearly uncontrolable. It's faster using just my fingers, but still not much control. Are there any exercises or tips to train your wrist to do a propper bend/vibrato for a fast Rock tempo? I'm confused on how to control it with my left hand.
Then copy the ones you like. Do this a lot. You may be tightening up because you are trying too hard to get this down. As your hand gets stronger it will get easier.
@DJ80s Try playing bends on acoustic for 2 minutes per day for a week and afterwards play on electrics
Also when starting out stay around the 12th fret, that is the best area the begin bending and eventually work your way down the neck. You may notice it is a lot harder to bend say g string 2nd fret for typical songs like Back in Black ac/dc - and also keep them on the B, G and high E strings to get things down (ignore the 3 thickest strings to begin with and do them later down the road)
duane allman's vibrato was the best... even when he was playing without a slide it sounded like he WAS using one because his vibrato could reach the sky.
i think my vibratos are okay but my friends tell me it's kinda weird bcos i vibrate every strings but the 6th upward??? what do you think? my vibrato's kinda wide yngwie style..
...you know, you have to do what works for you. I do different styles of vibrato. I like wider Yngwie/van halen/srv type vibrato the best. Just think of a great singer,or horn player. I think shredders really should spend time listening to Coltrane,Kirk,Dolphy. The vibrato-and feel-and finesse-of the delivery of the notes is missing in a lot of shred. So for me as far as shred guitar goes Yngwie,Jason Becker,Paul Gilbert,Satch,Vai.
Weird...I played Sax after a hand injury stopped my guitar play for 4 or so years and to me Coltrane has 0 vibrato. I mean with a 9* mouthpiece and a 5 reed you really couldn't other then with breath. Just me but I'd tell 'em to hit Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins for great horn Vibrato. Now I feel like I need to really listen to Coltrane to see if I can pick out Vib. on his playin...
I see what you mean in a way. His vibrato is not wide/big. I was listening to Resolution-the intro- when I wrote that. The vibrato is not like Rollins, but it's there. But my "gist of that statement was to encourage shredders to learn some things about how to "deliver the notes" from the great horn players. But yeah-I did forget Rollins-I stand corrected :-).
Thank you Mel, that helped...but I got one question...how much is a whole step in frets..I always wondered...am I correct that a quarter step is the note just on the next fret, so a whole step is 4 frets away?
That technique was so hard for me to get down. BUT-I think it is essential. The "how" is difficult cuz there is not a trick-or short cut(no matter what you read in book ads). So just do the bend-then vibrato while you hold it-and don't let it go flat. You have to practice this over and over.
Bending + Vibrato Pt 2: Go and rent SRV Live at the El Macambo. Seeing that makes you realize that there is a lot more to playing than just the notes and the technical side of playing. Watch that video you'll see what I mean. Some shred guys miss this. Check out Albert King,Paul Gilbert,Blues Saraceno,Yngwie Malmsteen, everything by Stevie Ray-get DVD's you need to see how it's done.
...yeah man-I spent so much time practicing when I was a kid. I had no teacher,it did take a lot longer to learn certain things, but I love playing. So just have fun man.

Yeah-he had a great vibrato. "Best" is kinda subjective-depends on who you ask-you'll get a million different answers :-).

Whole step=2 frets,Half step=1fret. A quarter bend is a bend just enough to make the note whine, but not reach a half step. Thanks for watching!!
