    Customer Reviews:

Nice build quality. Much nicer than the Blacktops, which I was also considering- Smooth, solid pots and tuning mechanisms. Also, higher quality than the 72 thinline reissue (I have one), and a much better buy _if you can get your hands on one_. My only quibble is the white edging around the f-hole, which isn't that noticeable in the ...

  • really like that Mustang....

  • Love off the wall Fender guitars, and on the wall Fenders, my first love I guess, very cool

  • Everyone check out Isaiah's band Earthless!

  • I'm glad they did some new body designs :3

  • Great demos of three very interesting guitars. You sold me, boys. Charles, you look like you need some rest, brother.

  • Fantastic

  • @TheJazzyJaguar only cheapskates downgrade to squiers......

  • @thejazzyjaguar there's no Squier 51!!! the squier series start making guitars in 80's!!!!

  • @MrAlex981418 of course there is a Squier 51. The number is just a model number, not a production year

  • @thejazzyjaguar theres no squier 51!!!!

  • incredible.

incredible more than my guitar 52 tele.

  • mustang sucks a lot.:S

  • I really only care for the '72 and the mustang

  • I NEED TO HAVE THAT '72.

  • @DopeDethrone Thanks! I'm really keen on getting the 72' now. The only problem is that they don't sell in Australia, well not at the moment I don't think... I guess I'll have to wait. I want to hold it and play it before i can really decide.

  • @42cosmonauts I played one today in Cranbourne Music in the Melbourne CBD

  • Comment removed

  • Really? How was it? I'll have to check it out then!

  • @42cosmonauts Actually I played it again today ;) It's the seafoam green. Looks and sounds great. But I did an A to B comparison again with the Fender Blacktop Strat and once again I preferred the Blacktop. Very similar (if not identical) tones and $800 cheaper - and it has the whammy bar which I prefer. Anyway - you'll have your own view.

  • @42cosmonauts In my opinion the Fender Blacktop Strat was just as good for $700. The 72 Pawnshop is $1500. Can't say I heard $800 difference but that's your call.

  • I have an acoustic guitar and want to move to electric guitar. Would these guitars be good for beginner electric guitar players? I really like the look of the '72 and mustang special.

  • I also played a Mustang. Cool looking but I felt that the bridge pickup was a bit too muddy for my tastes when overdriven. And the neck was too round and small. I like a flatter neck. The neck on the 72 fit my hands better.

  • I played a Surf Green Pawn Shop 72 at a local music store and was BLOWN away! I had to have it. I sold two backup guitars in order to get one. You can feel the quality, it's heavier than I imagined. The neck is flawless. The first time I played it with my band it stayed in tune all night long. Great tones too...the neck pickup gives you a jazzy, clean warmth with just a touch of high end bite and the hot Enforcer Bridge pickup has some nice overdrive.

  • The mustang special is shit, I played one and it fell apart while I was playing it.

  • Which fender is better for hard rock/punky/grungy stuff? I was thinking either a Pawn Shop Mustang Special or an american standard strat... any opinions?

  • @purpleyoshi27 I would go for the Pawn Shop Mustang Special. Just because it has all of those tonal options.

  • @funkyp4nd4 Could you figure out how it has 18 tonal options? I can count only fifteen lol

  • @lukat93 trust me.. theres 18. its just a mouthful to explain

  • @funkyp4nd4 please...I'll do the first fifteen if you want, just give me three more: on alone bridge humbucker you've got 3: single, hum, single on alone neck humbucker you've got 3: single, hum, single that's 6 from each humbucker alone, here is when they are together: bridge hum- neck hum bridge hum- neck single left bridge hum- neck single right bridge single left- neck hum bridge single left- neck single left bridge single left- neck single right br s.r-neck hum br.s.r-neck r br.s.r-neck l
  • @lukat93 the toggle switch on both pickups..

  • Or you can buy a Squier 51 for under $200 if you like the 51. It plays great and you cam always replace the pups.

  • @morgenholz yeah but if you accidentally drop a fender, it might scratch and go out of tune... but if you drop a squier the neck will snap off, the body will split in half and the cheap wiring will catch on fire.

  • @dragantoe Sounds dramatic. Odd how mine has made it with no trouble for 6 years. Will try to get some more milage out of it while saving up for Fender's updated version, which is also not made in America for only $600 more.

  • @dragantoe

    Owned!

  • @dragantoe Wow, that's totally untrue. The Squier '51 was built solid, though I admit that the electronics weren't great (got it for under 100 bucks, so that's to be expected). With it's low price, it was an amazing canvas for guitar modders, and turned into a really nice guitar with a good setup, some hardware changes, and a change of p-ups. The evidence of it's success is right here, in the form of the Fender '51. The man said 'loosely based' (1:19), but its really just an upscale replica.

  • Played the 72' and the 51' today. I love the 72!! I wish it had the 51's stained neck, but it played GODLY! The 51 that was there had it's action wayy too low

  • Ummm.....kurt...played a jaguar with a mustang bridge if I'm not mistaken....he didn't play an actual mustang

  • @xshaman100 He played many guitars. He did play a Jaguar at one point in time but also a Mustang. But he used the Mustang a lot more.

  • @xshaman100

Wrong. Kurt played many Mustangs throughout his career as well as Jaguars.

  • who would put humbuckers on a mustang? falkfhsdkf;. lol

  • the pawn shop 72 is one amazing guitar. I just played my first one today, and I have never been more impressed with the sound of a guitar!

  • earthless!!! :)

  • I played the Fender Mustang Special at the guitar center last friday, I didn't want to put it down

  • @gabyartes01 $800 at guitarcenter

  • So can someone explain to me what the controls do and how the pickup selection works?

I assumed the 2 knobs were volume and tone, but one seems to be acting as a pickup selector by turning it? I've played push/pull to activate a particular pickup sysem before but I can't figure out how this one works...

  • @BandwannaMcGunner If it's like the Squier '51, there's no tone knob. It's a rotary three way switch. Turning it all one way goes to the neck pickup, the bridge if you go the other way.

  • price?

  • 'loosely inspired'?

but thanks for the vid anyhow :)

can reviews please give ten secs to give a look at the necks, C shape U shape and 60's C shape, but i guess some visuals would be cool.

  • Reckon this guitar would handle rhythm well?

  • @maxismax1 there are three guitars in this video, and just about any guitar works for rhythm, lead is what you have to worry about

  • also i don't think i heard a single open chord or hint of overdrive / distortion in this video...

  • in my opinion the price range of the backline should be similar to that of the Guitar itself,

most people buying these guitars are only spending about £500 - 600, students etc, somehow i don't think they can afford a backline like that,

i wanna hear what it sounds like out of a 20 year old Marshall half stack thats seen better days and a fender frontman with no reverb,

lets hear what the guitar sounds like not the backline...

Rant over... good video other than that.

  • why is the telestrat hybrid called a '51?

  • @PANICBLADE

i would have thought because the pickguard is loosely based on the 51 Precision bass one.

  • @PANICBLADE it's an uprgrade of the sqiure '51

  • Are theese made in Mexico?

  • @smilmedstil japan

  • drrruuuuuullllllllll :)

  • I LOVE Fender, but these...are just ugly :/

  • @jimihendrixfan2008 it's not about the looks.. but about the tone..

  • I played a seafoam green 72 today...neck felt great! Body was light, comfortable, the blending switch for the two humbuckers was a stroke of genius! Unbelievable tone! Well, it could've been the amp...lol

Either way, I liked the guitar; it was cool looking and the Fender Wide Range humbucker (neck) sounded killer...the Enforcer pickup in the bridge basically sucked but you could tell from the growl that if you dropped a Super Distortion, JB, or a Pearly Gates in it, walls would be shaking!!!

  • What kinda of pickups are in the '72?

  • @Jcm005 fender wide range humbucker in the neck, fender enforcer in the bridge.

  • these are very cool guitars. i think im gonna buy the mustang special.

  • Anyone know how long these will run for?

  • I just bought the Pawn Shop '72 in Sea Foam Green. Love it!

  • gimmick

  • rarely r there ppl who demo guitars in genres other than blues or metal

  • I played one of the 51's today in a guitar shop and fell in love with it. Absolutely beautiful guitar.

  • Anybody want to buy my squier 51,only 500$.Ok stop laughing it's the original.

  • I absolutely love the '72 me wanty

  • @Kreason95 yeah! same here, in the surf green!

  • Just not digging the amp choice for this demo - the mids are completely scooped, and not in a good way. makes these guitars sound plinky and lightweight. old fenders need to be up above 3 to get to the sweet spot, otherwise you get a sound, well, like that. next time use a super, deluxe reverb, or princeton reverb to demo and set the volume at 4

  • @avalanchecanvass Not such good advice. First, maple strats are almost universally too bright due to the density of the wood. alder is a much more neutral base to get a good strat sound. next, I own a squier51 and I have chosen to keep it stock because it sounds fine. with the squier51, no tone control means when you turn it all the way up, it will be bright. solution? back the volume off a touch, or adust your amp to compensate.

  • i think that guitar made in japan or mexican something

  • It's funny how my Squier '51 sounds better... I modded it, and it still costed less than this Fender version. It actually sounds totally different - A Seymour Duncan Twangbanger in the neck makes for a really warm sound.

  • I like the Mustang one best

  • I like the '72, very cool with the "F Hole"

  • cgi.ebay.com/Fender-Pawn-Shop-72-3-Color-Sunburst-Rosewood-/190522580581?pt=Guitar&hash=item2c5c07de65

  • THE MUSTANG REMINDS ME KURT COBAIN JAGSTANG

  • the new fenders coming out are okay.. but i would rather buy a G&L

  • @PooPoo2U

    let's see you do better

  • @inlinefreak92: Oh, the smart mouth on this little teenager.

It'd be damn-near impossible to do any worse!

  • @inlinefreak92: Also I'd say the guy's pretty well aware that he sucks, that's most likely why he hands off the guitar to the other guy each time. Duh huh.

  • @PooPoo2U

    a. I highly doubt you're much older than me, if you're older at all, but that's irrelevant.

    b. If you really think he's so horrible, put up a video of you playing to give your comment some credibility.

    c. he's not at all a bad player. and even if he was, what purpose does it serve trying to humiliate the guy on an international stage.

all that comment did was make you look like a bad guy, it didn't add anything to the video.

  • @inlinefreak92: the reason i said it is because it's true and i have every right to say so. if you defend piss-poor playing that's your problem, but it doesn't mean it's any less true.

  • ugly guitars

  • im digging that mustang. plus im a huge azusa fan so that kinda takes its toll. im mostly a bass player so this makes me want to put fender bass humbuckers in a mustang bass.

  • the mustang is nice but i'm not quite sure if i should buy one cuz i got a '65 already but the ability to split the humbuckers is pretty sweet :|

  • Re: the 51...

The neck is finished in heavy gloss and the body is alder instead of basswood... I really think I would prefer the Squier version.

  • Wish they made a '72 as a solid-body as opposed to that semi-hollow design.

  • How many more fenders can we take, I have a custom no caster and white custom strat. they can't be beat.

  • @19501960 Thats the great thing bout the fender crowd they are always willing to try new things. I'm glad you've found your go to guitars, I'm still trying to find mine. This 72' model has all the features I love except a 22nd. fret!

  • am I the only one who feels that this is nonsense?

  • @letterbekmen how is this nonsense?

  • Even though they look like Squiers, they sound and feel better :/

  • they look like squier 51, but a hell of a lot more expensive

  • I want to go to there

  • Don't forget it's made in mexico not china so the parts and materials will be of better quality. I think it's awesome and I'll be buying one definatly!

  • @Iwazaru674 i dont even know if there is a difference in quality if it would be built in mexico or china

  • @butterknucklez I've played mexican american and japanese models, there is definitely a difference. The more money you spend the more dependable the hardware and electronics are (holding in tune, and noise interference). Mexican Classic players are USUALLY well made though I have encountered some bad ones. The Japanese in terms of quality and precision are right up there with American made .

  • @Iwazaru674 naaaah bro, i was talking about the mexican and chinese ones

i already know japan makes great things

  • @butterknucklez Oh I see what you mean, yeah thats a fair statement comparing the chinese to the mexican standards. The classic player series though in my opinion is a cut above those though.

  • @Iwazaru674 I thought the "Pawn Shop" series were all made in japan?

  • @Dragon555 Your absolutely right, my bad. That makes me want them even more!

  • does the mustang come with a maple fretboard?

  • Can you play something other than just blues on the neck pickup? I love the idea of the Mustang Special but you really don't show much of what it could do.

  • Do you think...the squire '51 will be more of a collectors item after FENDER built a real fender unit???

  • Fender copies Squier? Then raises the price to 800?Huh??

  • I don't know about that CBS-era 3-bolt neck. I've heard the neck comes loose easier and they diminish sustain.

  • You guys just inspired me to create my one '51. I think I'll use a hot rail and a Vintage noiseless neck maybe. Thanks for the video guys. Brilliant, Friggin' Brilliant!

  • The Pawn Shop guitars are made in Japan. They're MIJ hence the price.

I'm really looking forward to that '72 and the Mustang.

    They'll cost about 700$.

  • Excellent review. I hope to see you guys do more reviews. =D

  • play the 51 for 919516821365 hours and the others just a second >.>

  • that brown dude can't play the red mustang... can't even tune it lol

  • i love how fender thinks because the squier 51 was such a great success, everyone's gonna buy one of the expensive fender 51s, but it was only the good build quality plus the CHEAP price that everyone wanted, the design itself is hideous.

  • How exactly do you switch pickups on the '51?

  • Nice guitar.. but I would buy the Squier series

  • Nice but - where are these made for sure?

  • Nice name that Isaiah have!

  • i like the mustang, but the other ones look shitty and dont have that right sound im lookin for

  • I guess made in mexico ? But sounds great.

  • Where are these made? Mexico? US?

  • If you go to guitargrabber dotcom you can find out which of the big vendors have them in stock. It's in their featured section on the home page.

  • Turn off reverb and all effects on guitar demos please.

  • @linkwray22 For real that reverb feels like getting hit in the face with a paper bag full of vomit.

  • WAY. COOL. :o

  • these things may be a little pricey but hey if the alternative is a 5000 dollar Firebird X then get my one of the pawn shop Fenders :P

  • I really thought this was a joke but they are selling them. search them at guitarcenter.

  • Where is the Fender Mustang Special made? Mexico?

  • @CureRadio all of those are made in Japan

  • I honestly don't think that they would've gone through all this trouble if it wasn't real. They are a bit overpriced in my opinion.

  • I like the red one !!

  • you purist strat/tele guys need to start thinking outside the box... these are awesome ! U shaped 3-bolt neck on the 72 ..

  • i like them.

  • Ugly guitars. Fender needs to think of something different because this sure isn't it!

  • Could this be an april fools collaboration between fender and pg? Remember how long reviews took to come out for the blacktop series? this review came out the same day fender got the page up.

  • The '72 sounds incredible!

  • no sir, i don't like it

  • lol@ a modified squier being better...these are made in Japan Squiers are in China/Korea /story.

  • this was all about a super quality fender amp... that's what i heard.

  • i think about the mustang the same as the blacktops, theyre tampering with perfect guitars,so i dont like the mustang or the blacktops because theyre destroying perfection,

the 51 is a squire for £600 more because of a sticker

the 72 looks ok to me, but is pretty much a 51 with an f hole. good idea, badly produced, CREATE SOME NEW GUITARS DAMMIT and stop wrecking the good ones

  • i love the '72

  • Loosely inspired by the Squier '51??? News flash.....it looks identical to the Squier '51 except for the headstock decal and extra $700!!

  • @raunchymac and its actually being manufactured now. unlike the squier

  • @raunchymac Don't forget Texas Special, Enforcer, best woods and so on ;)

  • @josustrat

    Yup...lol

  • @raunchymac It may "look" identical, but the body is alder instead of basswood, the neck is glossier, the pickups are an Enforcer in the bridge and a Texas Special in the neck, and it's built in Japan. I'm sure there are more differences, but I can't think of any others.

  • @Digitbig

Yeah that's what I said "looks identical". Certainly more than loosely inspired.....let's just say more than a coincidence. :)

  • @raunchymac

    check the specification?

  • @raunchymac Right? they were selling 51s for under $100 before they discontinued them.

  • @vibroluxor Yup that's right. The lowest I've seen them when they were clearing them out was $79!! They had one of the nicest necks I've ever played on.

  • @raunchymac which is why you find all those Squier51 bodies on eBay. If i had known anything about these guitars when they were available, I would've bought one of every color. now they're scarce as hen's teeth.

  • @raunchymac it's not all about looks..

  • @raunchymac But the only upside to this is that it's easier to find, than the squier.

  • haha, i think these guitar are getting too much dirt.... i really like the mustang special, except i wish it had the maple option or at least a full scale neck

  • What a joke. I built my squier '51 up from stock with parts 3x better than what fender is offering and it still cost less than the $1000 they're talking about pricing it at.

    Fender is the new Gibson.

    Dm

  • Damn, these guitars sound sexy. I wish you guys would demonstrate the coil splitting on the neck pickups, though.

  • APRIL FOOLS!

  • @therichardchannel That was my initial thought, but this seems like a pretty long way to go for an April Fools joke...

  • The Mustang is pretty sweet!

  • where could you buy these's things?

  • @thebeerfest2008

    Musician's Friend has them.

  • Ugly as hell

  • God I hate April fools! Can't figure out if this is real or not arrrrrrrggggggg

  • @martinrking real

  • @martinrking its real man

  • @martinrking Its real you can buy it at guitar center and online

  • @superskwrl no, I'm pretty sure this is a a joke :)

  • @martinrking I just played one at Guitar Center...no joke :)
