For those of you who said this sucks because It doesn't sound the same as REM your looking at this from the wrong perspective. When you cover a song you play It the way It sounds in your head and the way it feels to you. If you want the REM version..watch the REM version. The faster playing and the louder screaming (passion) that's in this cover appeals to me and many others..although i do love REM's original just as much.

Mate nothing personal but you are acting way too much and you are playing it way too fast. I don't think this cover is as good as other people say but if you drop the exaggeration and the screaming/crying you have the voice to sing it the right way. I'm sorry but this doesn't come close to the REM version. In fact, it is a very weak cover - which is not what I expected. I know he has a lot of respect for REM and this song but he has not covered this well at all. Bad song choice really, very difficult to cover a song with so much feeling and emotion, and there are few songs that match the feeling and emotion of Country Feedback, especially when REM play it live.
So he should fill it with fluff? everything you posted was subjective, thereby not "backing up" a goddamn thing. Brynbobboy is just more concise than you. Wordiness=/=Intelligence.
I said it was superfluous because it was subjective, bro. You say it has more feeling and emotion, but that's an opinion. He obviously doesn't agree with your evaluation, and therefore just said "its better". because all he could say besides that is "no, this has more emotion in my opinion." That's what i'm getting at- you can give a subjective reason, but that doesn't make your claim any more substantial in the eyes of others.
Even so he has still not given a reason for this version being better than the original! He has merely disagreed with what I've said. If you were to take the view that he meant that this version has more emotion, that is just speculation as he has not said that is what he thinks. He's simply said "it's better" and is most likely to have a different reason for thinking that.
Also in saying that the REM version has more feeling and emotion, I am giving a reason for my judgement that their version is better, it doesn't matter if it's subjective - it's still a reason, and has still backed up my argument. Has he backed up his claim? Quite clearly no. Why does he think this version is better? We can only speculate because he hasn't said why he thinks it's better!

I watched it twice, to see if I was missing something. It's a poor cover, end of. I know who I'm criticising here too. I'm a massive Peppers fan and I even have one of John's solo albums - To Record Only Water for Ten Days. This doesn't come close to the REM version, it is a poor cover of a fantastic song.

he's trying a warmer tone and singing lower than he usually does - prolly in honor of Stipe. But he adds his own craziness. John listened to the song on repeat when he was facing a lot of depression - I think it was after his apartment burned down? And it's a manically sad song to begin with. And John does crazy well. It seems personal to John this way, all not perfect. If you love REM doing it go listen to REM!

Rubbish. I gave a reason for the REM version being better - thereby backing up my claim that "this doesn't come close to the REM version".
But if you want me to be more concise:
This doesn't come close to the REM version because it lacks feeling and emotion, and they are what made the original great.
That is being concise, and backing up what I said. brynbobboy merely issued a statement.

I said it was superfluous because it was subjective, bro. You say it has more feeling and emotion, but that's an opinion. He obviously doesn't agree with your evaluation, and therefore just said "its better". because all he could say besides that is "no, this has more emotion in my opinion." That's what i'm getting at- you can give a subjective reason, but that doesn't make your claim any more substantial in the eyes of others.

Even so he has still not given a reason for this version being better than the original! He has merely disagreed with what I've said. If you were to take the view that he meant that this version has more emotion, that is just speculation as he has not said that is what he thinks. He's simply said "it's better" and is most likely to have a different reason for thinking that.

Also in saying that the REM version has more feeling and emotion, I am giving a reason for my judgement that their version is better, it doesn't matter if it's subjective - it's still a reason, and has still backed up my argument. Has he backed up his claim? Quite clearly no. Why does he think this version is better? We can only speculate because he hasn't said why he thinks it's better!

the first time i heard john sing i didnt like his voice but after listening to more of his songs it really stuck with me and i have loved his music ever since so im not bashing you but i doubt that u watched the whole video before u said REMs version has more feeling because i find it hard to believe that anyone can put more feeling into a song than what john does on alot of his songs and i mean damn just listen to his voice he gets so into it and just pours emotion out

I watched it twice, to see if I was missing something. It's a poor cover, end of. I know who I'm criticising here too. I'm a massive Peppers fan and I even have one of John's solo albums - To Record Only Water for Ten Days. This doesn't come close to the REM version, it is a poor cover of a fantastic song.

this is not a particularly good example of john covering this song. if you check out the live at the borderline version the feeling and emotion in his voice will floor you!!!!

he's trying a warmer tone and singing lower than he usually does - prolly in honor of Stipe. But he adds his own craziness. John listened to the song on repeat when he was facing a lot of depression - I think it was after his apartment burned down? And it's a manically sad song to begin with. And John does crazy well. It seems personal to John this way, all not perfect. If you love REM doing it go listen to REM!
I DO love REM, btw, my fave song on Out of Time is Half a World Away.
