Great vid. Especially proud to see the natural sista speak so glowingly of natural hair in the presence and behind the comments of the relaxed sista who was standing next to her.
Cant respect black women who use the stinking nasty relaxer. Why would you wanna straighten the lambs wool that God has bestowed on you Black people are the only people with that hair. Black women who relax their hair and their childrens hair are agents of white supremacy and therefore an enemy of black people. They are sellouts and sambos and are destroying us Fire and brimstone on them. forgive them father for they know not what they do for you have created us first in your perfect image
wait. was the dude at the end of the video for real? lol. i hope not. and lol @ Niki223344. please, don't feel sorry b'cuz nobody needs your sympathy. i'll take my kinky-ass fro over "curls" any day.
What is wrong with Black American women? So obsessed with the race and hair types. It pisses me off.All hair types are natural whether you have relaxed or coloured it. And stop saying a lighter skin is more beautiful or darker skin more beautiful. I'm beginning to be annoyed by black americans. I'm from Africa and live in Europe and do whatever Iwant with my hair. My daughter has honey blond curls & she wears it curly or straight. White people also got there as immigrants . Stop the racism.
we should not feel encouraged to look down on women like beyonce and keyshia cole just because they're light. they are beautiful black women who did not choose they're skin color. what they did do is celebrate the veratility of black hair.
Im light skinned and i hate when someone who has more african in them think we (light skinned) people dont have trouble with our hair I got more FRIZZ than i can handle....people with straight hair want curles and vice versa that just the way it is BUT i dont put any weave and extensions in my hair that is all too pricey and i am not paying i will just deal with my frizz
They were saying how black female celebities just get lighter and lighter looking. Which is true. I was born in barbados and when rihanna first came out she was never that light. Beyonce also got lighter even tho shes light already and so did Kelly and Keyshia Cole. The media is so harsh to black women its unbelievable.
i agree with what you're saying, but they are not celebrating its versatility, that's not at all what thier point is--- if they were celebrating versatility we'd see thier hair be different texture, closer to the natural one, they clearly stay in a certain texture range
yea i agree... its not our hair they are celebrating. Its Asian peoples hair that is being put in the spotlight everytime you see a black woman with a weave.
If you are getting relaxers you basically covering up that versatility, especially since natual hair can be straight, kinky curly coily wavy frizzy or sleek... relaxed hair is uniform- everyone with a relaxer looks the same. Thats not versatile. Now a wig is somebody elses hair or synthetic. It has nothing to do with black hair.
I love my natural hair. It is big and curly, but it is so hard to work with sometimes. I'll do a bump press at the salon and love itso much cuz I'm not tearing through my hair like when its curly. I'm so torn betwee my love for my natural curls and the easy management with a press
THIS VIDEO SPEAKS TRUTH! If someone i think all people should be ok with THEIR hair! If a person dont feel comfortable in their own skin and in their...they need to closely moniter their self-worth/self-esteem
As a young black girl and a real minority, I had a hard time excepting what God gave to me, but fortunately I grew out of that and now I have locks. I get MORE attention from all races of men since I've done it!!!
Look at Saint at the end cutting up! I'm so glad I ran across this video, and if I wasn't such a fotki hair pic junkie I never would have! There's a lot of truth telling in this vid... Good job Toya :-)

Hey, thanks to all you black american women who are going natural. Looking at the history and reasons why we enslave ourselves to the LYE in the first place made me look for the truth in other areas of my life too and not believe the LIES.
I've gone natural years ago by not perming anymore.. But I still wore weaves. This summer I wore my hair natural all the way and it was mentally hard. Many black women asked me why I didn't get a weave etc. And I had a hard time meeting people who understood that it WAS MY HAIR. Nothing to be ashamed off, nothing be be bashing or hiding. So when it got colder I got braids in and people treated me normal again. It is tough out there...
Why are African American women wearing this fake crap on their scalps?.My advice - Get a good haircut, keep it conditoned. Trim the ends every 3 months and get a major haircut every year.I have been doing this since I was a girl and my hair is beautiful
Nappy hair here! And I love it! Not jealous of anyone's hair. Don't get me wrong, every race of women has beautiful hair. However, this doesn't mean that I am envious of them. I can appreciate all hair types.
I liked the vid. not only mainstream society but within our own race there is still self hatred. untill that is destroyed there will always be good and bad hair comments among black people. we have to transform our minds.
I am a natural woman (no relaxer, no heat) and I really enjoyed the video. I just wish that I could hear the sisters that are featured in this more clearly. I also enjoyed the background music.
Love the vid brotha. My ethnographic studies during undergrad as an anthro major echoes what you convey in your documentary. As a black woman I feel there needs to be more dialogue on assimilation and conformity with black women in the U.S. Great vid and keep it coming.
There is nothing wrong w/ wearing weave.. As long as it's taken care of.. For the young lady who said," why would you come outside w/ weave." People can say the same thing about YOUR hair.. To some that might not even be attractive.. Do what fits you.. Be true to yourself!
black woman be proud of what you are wear your hair natural. if you all do it nobody can do nothing about it your job a corporation, nobody. Be proud wear your hair natural.
i dont think it matters. as long as it looks good on her. haha but i aint a fan of the mowhawk but long hair, short hair(if it she can look it) braids, burly hiar, all that its cool. as long as she looks good with it.
As a natural sista I have to say that I appreciate the honesty of this video. Brothas love your sisters curves and curls and sisters love yourself and the brothas will follow suit. Trust me I got a higher calibere of Nubian men once I chopped off all that caucausianesce hair!
Thanks for the doc. Why aren't more black products advertised on mainstream t.v.? I get WHY it's like that but... Companies should cater to ALL peoples, that's more money, right? I'm tired of Caucasian hair CMs. Why are black hair CMs just on BET? We struggle w/our hair yet the other 87% of America has no problem styling their hair & keeping it healthy. Why are we left out? Give me products for wash n wear hair so I don't fight with it anymore. The tech is there & I'm tired of grease & perms.
What the fuck does that mean??? Have you even touched a black person's hair? You sound like an idiot. MEDAL does not grow out of a human being's head! Your a discrace to humanity!!!!
I think this documentary would be better if you tone down the music. Maybe the use of more instrumental would be a better choice. It was at times hard to listen to the dialog or you were focusing too much on the music to get the point across.
Nobody asked you for your sympathy. Thats your opinion, and right you dont "GO THROUGH ANYTHING" thats obviously why you have a narrow minded view on the issue.
We didn't create these stereotypes, we live under them. BEAYBG check it out on the web. It's unfortunate that black women/girls have had to live in a society that tries daily to lessen their worth and beauty. Who said white was the standard. And although I believe everyone should be celebrate who they are and love themselves; black, white, asian, latin, etc, I don't believe there is a standard. Because then I'd have to ask: Who created the standard and who are they?
Black women are hurting in this racist country due to their hair and skin color yet they give a straight haired pink doll to daughters as a priority.
Were they to listen to their men they would be better off. Black women r the least married women in history because of white oppression of them and their men
Frank Sinatra a white man singing about black beauty?
Black women wish! Black women have been told by the white man how to wear their hair for centuries and long for the white man to notice her inspite of him branding them with hot irons in slavery and publicly dismembering them in lynchings. Still black women give pink dolls to daughters making them want a white man secretly go to blacktown(.)net
so WHAT Frank Sinatra was singing in the background? WHITE MEN are some of the FIRST and ONLY men to appreciate the natural beauty of the Black female. like my WHITE father did with my HALF-BLACK Mama, and my WHITE Grandfather did with my BLACK Grandmama.
I liked the laid-back approach of the video without an axe to grind. It's a problem for all groups - possessing a characteristic that is seen as unattractive by the majority. People should be taught how to deal with it, and laws introduced to stop them from being harrassed over it in a hateful way.
Girly i loved how you did this video and the view points expressed. But why did the dude at end, liken the characateristic of natural hair being black like stealing and robbing cars is being black. If that was your brother you needed to pop him in the back of his head.
lol. it was supposed to be completely sarcastic for humor purposes only, a "blooper" of sorts. he wasn't serious though. :) thanks for the compliment!
It's called "variation" and it's a woman's perogative. Deal with it. At least they aren't ashamed of their natural hair and had quite a bit of meaningful things to say about it (if you had listened).
And most importantly, I'm an anthropologist. It's not our job to go around telling people what's right and wrong and what practices are acceptable or not, and I'm damn sure not the one to tell people what they should and shouldn't do. My job is to create an unbiased portrayal of people and culture, and that's what I did. Keep your negative, ill-informed comments to yourself. Thanks.
Black women aren't ashamed of their hair? They burn their scalp with chemicals and go weeks without washing their hair just to keep it straight. That's not being ashamed of curly hair? There is no hairstyle that I would be willing to go 2 weeks without a shower for. Black women should not be ashamed of African, curly hair, but they are. It's your issue, not mine. 1 more thing, if you don't want responses, don't post videos.
I don't mind comments, but you could be less ignorant. I obviously have to approve the comments before they are posted, and I do to show the world your stupidity.
You should learn not to generalize so much as well. I never said that black women were not ashamed of their hair. Some indeed are, and some aren't. Why overgeneralize? You told me that my video did not make sense. I simply recorded what was...I don't understand angry youtubbers like you who go around looking for fights to pick, with minimal information.
I agree with the film producer. They don't go 2 weeks to keep it straight... talk to a black woman ok. Black hair does not produce a much oil as people from European dissent. Thus white people was their hair so often because their hair get oily faster and black hair doesn't... theres ya lesson. know all the fact before you type next time
Give me a break. Super skinny straight or big black fro, they both can look great. Women like to change their style almost every season. Why should black women be any different. Women shouldn't torture their hair but quit hateing just because women want to express themselves with different styles of hair.
This video makes no sense. These girls all talk about how "natural" black hair is beautiful, but all of them have it straightened or in braids. If you believed it was beautiful that way, your hair would be that way. Black women are so afraid of having curly hair that they will go 2 weeks without washing it, just to keep it straight, that's disgusting. Black girls should leave their hair curly and stop being ashamed of it.
first off, why belittle my video just because you disagree with the people in it? secondly, only one person in this video had chemically processed hair. the other had short twists, the other had longer ones and the girl with the long straight hair (white tank top) switches between wearing her naturally kinky fro or flat ironing it with tracks.
even if black women have natural hair, they can't wash it every day. the chemical nature of black hair, pressed, or not, is to be dry, the exact opposite of other cultures where they must wash it nearly every day or it will get greasy.
Good video.

Grace, can you please stop your nonsense? All you do is bash Black women and White men, and it is OLD.

Good documentary except for the end. Whether he was serious or not, it wasn't funny.

Black girls should leave their hair curly and stop being ashamed of it.

first off, why belittle my video just because you disagree with the people in it? secondly, only one person in this video had chemically processed hair. the other had short twists, the other had longer ones and the girl with the long straight hair (white tank top) switches between wearing her naturally kinky fro or flat ironing it with tracks.
toytoy84 4 years ago
even if black women have natural hair, they can't wash it every day. the chemical nature of black hair, pressed, or not, is to be dry, the exact opposite of other cultures where they must wash it nearly every day or it will get greasy.
