The word that was used was the Greek word "Molokoi", the plural form of Molokos, which means soft and weak or lacking courage. The modern western mentality tends to wrongfully equate those qualities with homosexuality. Therefor a translator, being influenced by his/her CURRENT society, perceives this without considering the context or history of the actual text.

The definition of marriage has changed many times (polygamy used to be common in marriage, marriages used to be arranged or only between people of the same race).
The only changing marriage are those voting for prop 8. You are giving marriage a static definition that it has never had. You are taking away rights and for the first time in US history, discriminating against a group of people via the constitution.
The definition of marriage, until recently, has ALWAYS been between opposite sexes. Yes, there have been laws on who could or could not marry. Interracial, Polygamy but the spouses have always been of the opposite sex. Arranged marriage between same-sex couples? I dont think so! We are not trying to discriminate against same-sex couples. I would have to disagree. I believe marriage is far more than a simple contract. I believe it is a covenant between God, a man and his wife. Covenant and contract are similar, but I think of contracts as a legal document enforced by manmade laws. The Marriage Covenant is much more. Its a solemn agreement between God and heterosexual couples. If we obey that covenant we will be blessed spiritually & temporally. I believe God married Adam & Eve long before man created contracts.

Therefor a translator, being influenced by his/her CURRENT society, perceives this without considering the context or history of the actual text.

In fact he goes on for quite a long time about idolatry but the only thing people zero in on this verse. That tends to happen a lot. The entire New Testament is about loving those that you perceive as different than you and not judging or harming people even if you believe they're sinners. They may enter the kingdom of Heaven before you.

Here's what the arguments for both sides should have been.
No on 8: Civil Liberties are set in place to protect minorities from the will of the majority. Thus, the judges decision was just and legal.
Yes on 8: A legal union between a man and a woman is called Marriage. If something does not follow this equation it should be called something else, with all the rights, privilages, and financial responsibility as a married couple...AKA Domestic Partnerships.

God is the one who designed us froggiskools. If he had wanted marriage to be between two same sex people he would have designed our bodies that way too, but that's not my main point. See that commercial was cut, because what she should have said is "NO...that's why family code 297.5 exists already. They are already protected, I don't have to worry about that and I have the freedom to vote Yes on prop 8 and still make it to bbq next time maria and her partener julia show up."

Thank you, rave82000, for clarifying how ridiculous this rhetoric on discrimination, hate and "civil rights" is. Not a single civil right of gays is at stake with prop 8. Marriage has never been a right. The only rights at stake here are those of children who, all other things equal, do best raised by a father and a mother. I support gay rights, and I support prop 8. I love all of my gay friends and family, and I'm voting YES on 8. There's no hate in YES on 8.

Children's rights AREN'T at stake, because prop 8 does not mandate who can or can't raise children, or that every child MUST have a Mom & DAD. This is another false irrelevant point. Prop 8 discriminates people due to gender, and under CA's Constitution, THAT IS a violation of civil rights. NO on 8!

Constitutional amendments like Prop 8 that have passed in other states have been used as a wedge to begin stripping away whatever domestic partnership rights gays and lesbians have. Prop 8 will be used that way too if it passes. Don't try to legislate your religious views onto others. Vote NO ON 8.

It pains me to think that anyone's equal rights are being put to a popular vote. Please vote down Prop 8 and treat all people, and love, equally. Some people suggest civil unions would be best suited for gay couples but I say "separate but equal" has never been the American way. It's wrong to have different laws for different people. Vote NO on Prop 8.

Don't bother donating money to fight prop 8.
Donate money to get congressmen, senators and a PRESIDENT elected THAT WILL BRING OUR TROOPS HOME!
A ban on gay marriage might not be a good thing but it can be undone.
Dead troops can't ever be brought back to life nor can we restore limbs to those missing legs or arms and every time you donate to a cause other than bringing them home you are saying their living or dying doesn't matter.

The ads need to be more hard-hitting. How about an ad highlighting Mark Buse, McCain's gay Chief of Staff. The ad would ask viewers if it is right to strip McCain's most trusted advisor of his civil rights.
The same ad could also feature California Congressman David Dreier and ask the viewer if it's right to strip a gay Congressman of his civil rights. In the final scene, you see Mary Cheney and her wife Heather Poe (with the rest of the Cheney family by their side).

Prop 8 is about changing the meaning of a centuries old word. Are we going to start calling Apples and Oranges both Apples? I have given my employees equal benefits. I have voted for GBLT rights, but don't change the meaning of a word that had religious significance long before it had a legal meaning. Restore the definition of Marriage. Vote YES on 8!(And as a group, quit taking my yard signs, do the people you represent even know the meaning of bigot?)

The definition of marriage has changed many times (polygamy used to be common in marriage, marriages used to be arranged or only between people of the same race).
The only changing marriage are those voting for prop 8. You are giving marriage a static definition that it has never had. You are taking away rights and for the first time in US history, discriminating against a group of people via the constitution.

The definition of marriage, until recently, has ALWAYS been between opposite sexes. Yes, there have been laws on who could or could not marry. Interracial, Polygamy but the spouses have always been of the opposite sex. Arranged marriage between same-sex couples? I dont think so! We are not trying to discriminate against same-sex couples. We are trying to Protect & Preserve Marriage which has had deep religious meaning far longer than its been a legal shortcut to Federal tax benefits.

The religious meaning for marriage for you is entirely different than it is for me. Should the government not recognize Hindi or Buddhist marriages because they are not the same religious meaning as yours? No.
This is marriage in the eyes of the state, not in the eyes of your religion.

If religion has no place in state affairs, then what about the other way around! Why did government STEAL our sacred word and use it to establish a legal union to give out tax benefits and such? I can answer that in case you dont know. This country was FOUNDED on religious principals and FAMILY values. The founding fathers wanted freedom from having a particular church forced on them but they still believed in God and HIS laws. Give back our word and go make up your own!

I would have to disagree. I believe marriage is far more than a simple contract. I believe it is a covenant between God, a man and his wife. Covenant and contract are similar, but I think of contracts as a legal document enforced by manmade laws. The Marriage Covenant is much more. Its a solemn agreement between God and heterosexual couples. If we obey that covenant we will be blessed spiritually & temporally. I believe God married Adam & Eve long before man created contracts.

I feel that you have the write to enter just a covenant with God. But you cannot possibly claim that the current legal definition of marriage includes that. Celebrities and their 1 week marriages? Marriages between atheists?
Clearly "marriage" as legally defined does not involve God.
So unless you wish to ban atheists from marriage, it is hypocritical to ban homosexuals from it. You SHOULD keep your covenant with God if you chose to. But don't confuse that with "marriage" as it stands now.

But the word Marriage has had sacred religious meaning before it was used as a legal term. If the law wants to come up with another word for Civil Marriage thats fine, it can even be the same word as for Civil Unions. Our founding fathers were religious and our ancestors didnt mind them applying legal meaning to the word Marriage but its going too far. I think most in the US want to restore the definition of Marriage to mean opposite sexes.

Yes, the word "marriage" once meant something different. So did most words. Including words we use regularly, such as "abandon" which meant "subdue", or "Sabbath" which meant "Saturday", or "toilet" which was a bag to hold clothes.
Words change over time. "Marriage" is one of those words. Perhaps you need a new word to describe a religious ceremony? Because "marriage" no longer does any such thing.
Or, as I said, you will have to ban atheists from "marriage".
Come up with a new, religious word.

Many of the important founding fathers were DEISTS actually. This country was founded on religious freedom, not religion. The bible did not create marriage. Marriage has been around in almost every society. The constitution makes no mention of marriage actually.
Also, ideas such as "do not lie/murder/steal" have not been tolerated in any society, they are not unique to your bible.
Maybe you should consider opening a text book not made in the 1950's.

Take Benjamin Franklin for example, a self proclaimed Deist was raised by parents who left England because of persecution. He was baptized & raised as a Presbyterian. 1&2- I have many similar "Christian values." I was raised in a Christian home, but I am not a Christian and neither was Franklin. As for everything else, those were all "I believe" statements because there is no concrete evidence to lead you to that conclusion.
Just as a PS: JC never condemned homosexuality. It is condemned in the Levitcial Laws and by Paul (which he states "this is my opinion" at the begging of Romans)

Pt. 2) The reason Franklin fought the religions of the day, he felt they were all corrupt and I would agree. I believe in Apostasy and falling away from Christs true teachings (the dark ages), but I also believe that God inspired the founding fathers to prepare the way so that Christ was able to restore his true Gospel to the Earth. The Covenant of Marriage existed before this world was created. MAN later took the word Marriage and used it as a legal term. Please give it back! continued.

Pt.3) Text books were MUCH more accurate in the 50s than today. Textbooks on EVERY subject today are filled with errors, half truths, misconceptions and even outright lies. The SAME data is being used today to substantiate global warming that was used in the 60s to substantiate and warn of the coming ice age. Textbooks are a joke! The mistakes have been increasing dramatically since the 1950s. And many publishers feel it will get worse before it gets better. Dont trust modern Textbooks!

Wow is right! The largest convention on Global Warming ever held was made up mostly of politicians & journalists plus a few scientists. They overwhelmingly voted that Global Warming is real!
