I always find it amazing that Jeremy Spencer did so many of the vocals, with Peter standing by, with his amazing voice. He just had something that spencer could never bring across. Is it because Peter couldn't sing and play at the same time???
@z: Main reason: Peter gave full effort backing Jeremy, (making FM a great 2-guitar band), but Jeremy refused to back Peter, (making them sound like a 3-piece, never Peter's intention): Peter "let" Jeremy do more to make the band sound better as a whole. Danny was added, not to have 3 guitars, but to finally have 2 guitars on Peter's tunes. Danny's guitar work was integral to Peter's best original material, (FM's best work). Jeremy's guitar was non-existent on that stuff.
We used to play both versions in a band called The Rhythm Doctors, here in Hamilton, NZ - and we rearranged the lyrics a little so that we started out with the chorus first in ".... My Time Ain't Long" so it didn't start off sounding the same as "Dust My Broom" - "Dust My Broom" also had a long drum fill between the end of the chorus and the next verse! Made them sound a little different.
@Piers40 I red on wiki, and there were more interesting things to read on that page: "Dust My Broom" is a blues standard originally recorded as "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom" by Robert Johnson the Mississippi Delta blues singer and guitarist on November 23, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas. The song was originally released on 78 rpm format. There is an ongoing dispute as to whether the song was originally written by Johnson or by his contemporary, bluesman Elmore James.
I was first a fan of the latter-day Fleetwood Mac [the Stevie Nicks version, late 70s, and then the 80s] and then I discovered the older stuff. Totally different, but I just love this version of the band. Every song that I have heard is awesome!!
@SweetUniverse I heard the dude say he was gonna dust his broom, but if this is indeed "Dust My Broom" [i haven't listened to that yet], why do they call it "I Believe My Time Ain't Long?" Was that a standard thing for blues singers, to record a song and re-title it??
This is the original single version of the track featuring temp. bassist Bob Brunning.
The CHAIN anthology features an different recording of the song recorded a year or so later with John McVie, and instead of a harmonica there's a piano playing throughout (Christine Perfect?) Don't know where exactly the later version originated though. Sounds like it could possibly be live in studio.
Yes, the original song by Elmore James is called 'Dust My Broom' but Fleetwood Mac decided to call their cover 'I Believe My Time Ain't Long'. Don't ask me why.
There is a great album called "Fleetwood Mac in Chicago 1969" with a really good version of this on it. or maybe im thinking of the Boston Tea Party performance.
@Tzaosirus7 lots of blues bands brought out the same song twice with a different name. crafty little buggers. i have an original fleetwood mac compilation that has both versions. both are identical.
My Favorite OLD FLEETWOOD MAC SONG =)

Must have been one of the most popular blues songs of the period. I think just about every blues group I saw in that period did a version of it.
