I had a hard time trying to understand why Riku and the King wore the coats; everything that exists gives off a scent or feel, so the coat hides the scent. That's why Axel evaded the Organization, and why the King told Sora and co, to be quiet in Ansem's Study ;)

In this reality, yeah Darkness has a scent. It's how he was able to identify his heightened powers Ansem gave him, as well as identifying Ansem. For Darkness to be recognized as a scent, I guess it has a pungent smell ;)
