@Unaphiliated just my 5 cent, the effect was used for the first time (by peter gabriel). it was actually used before that. david bowie's "low" and the tubes "mondo bondage" for example. cheers
Even though this version is superiour in my eyes, I will always love the Primus' cover of this and family and the fishing net for introducing me to Mr. Gabriel.
My son's middle names are as fallows Liam Philip Gabriel(love Genesis!!!) ....... . Sorry no last name... as character fraud is rampant upon the internet. The wool is soft and warm...
What an absolutely GREAT track. This was music to be experienced as well as listened to. Just freakin` brilliant, down to the last percussive element. The vocals, as only Gabriel can deliver.
This is easily Peter's greatest and most disturbing album...Geffen Records refused to release it and Pete had to go to Mercury Rec. to get it out there...Then he proceeded to wimped out forever-after.
I recommend Oingo Boing's "Insanity". That song and this are two of the most wonderfully disturbing songs I have ever heard. Elvis Costello's I Want You falls in the same list.
I saw him preform this live in Toronto. He opened with this song. While the drums were playing he and the band members were walking through the stadium with hand held spotlights. So cool. Oh and all the band members had shaved their heads. One of the best concerts I've seen.
easily one of the creepiest songs ever recorded by a human...this one song almost ruined Peter Gabriel's' career and got him fired at Geffen Records (he retreated to Mercury Records) Hey Peter...This is one of the best albums ever, Pal ...
Peter G. has never topped this song or this album and remains a green earth wussy...
haha. my history teacher is crazy and he played this song randomly for my class. it was kinda creepy cuz he locked the door, shut off the lights, and creeped around the room.
the song is rather self explanatory, what i really like about this album (peter gabriel 3) is it exists in its own disjointed atmosphere that hits your aural senses like few albums of the time or since. this song is one of the bleakest introductions to an album in the past thirty years, and i love it.
You know, it's not the performance, it's the way they were recorded. Nobody had done this before Phil Collins. This was a really revolutionary drum sound at the time.
I don't think you understand the revolutionary nature of that big drum sound that Phil began. This, along with In the Air Tonight completely changed the way drumming on songs was in the early 80s. It is a complete change from the busy drum fills of guys like Keith Moon of the Who. NO ONE drummed like this when Phil started. This gated drum effect was a huge evolution in the sound of music at that time, and the influence cannot be overstated.
@Cavauro look up watcher of the skies, suppers ready, hell.. any Genesis Album and you'll find out he's not as mediocre as you say man, I bet you can't do it... And so what if the drums are simplistic in this song, it sure as hell work with the rest of the song...
I understand the admiration of Phil's drums but I feel the true brilliance of this song lies in the writing. I love creepy music and this is one of the creepiest ever. The use of scraping guitar strings and the drums add to it, but if you just read the words without the music it still causes shivers. To touch that nerve we all have of someone lurking behind that door is wonderful.
@Malzarin okay, you understand the admiration of Phil's drums. Now, Who the fuck is Phil? That PuddySack , who, Peter Gabriel was so far above in musical talent, had to leave, him and the entire 'Band' named after the religious 'Christian' dogma, meaning the beginning of creation, "Genesis"? And you dare question Peter Gabriel's use of the guitar? "scraping"?
Refer to another song by Mr.Gabriel. Also one which does not include "PHIL" crumbling on drums. "You're Not One of Us."
@bordercollieluv Actually, you have taken my comments completely out of context. When I first comemmented on this post all anyone wanted to praise was "Phils" drumming. I acknowledged that, kindly to start, and then I spoke of what was best in the music which was the writing and use of unsual sounds. I am not a Genesis fan honestly, my interest in Peter came from Tony Levin and Fripp.
@bordercollieluv dude fuck you. Phil is as much of a musician as peter.Just because phil was more mainstream does not make him less talented.Besides Phil's genesis was far superior than Peter's. Ask yourself this who has sold more records both in a band and solo.........i know for the most part records sells dont matter but they do show he's doing something right.
@MrJihadjared You are right, Phil Collins is a very good allround muisician, but Peter is more genius and innovative with new styles and sounds, that makes him less mainstream, but record sales means nothing. Just look how a relative low-talented band like AC/DC are one of the highest selling bands!
@proslade "a relative low-talented band like AC/DC " what a rediculious statement , ok there not pushing the bounds of creativity or diversity , but untalented ?
One of Gabriel`s best, a really great musical achievement made especially memorable with Phil Collins` thumping back beat. Its too bad Peter left Genesis before they both reached their creative peaks.
I shattered my shoulder playing football. I was 15. Many drugs and many visitors but all that I remember is this album. My evil Bro saying that I'd get a rise out of it. He was right!
with out a doubt one of the scariest songs i've ever heard ..... Wonderful

Lyrics
I know something about opening windows and doors
I know how to move quietly to creep across creaky wooden floors
I know where to find precious things in all your cupboards and drawers
Slipping the clippers
Slipping the clippers through the telephone wires
The sense of isolation inspires
Inspires me

I like to feel the suspense when I'm certain you know I am there
I like you lying awake, your baited breath charging the air
I like the touch and the smell of all the pretty dresses you wear
Intruders happy in the dark
Intruder come
Intruder come and leave his mark, leave his mark
