  • thanks man! the most informative thing i've seen on them!

  • do you think if i used thin paracord would that help with absorbing the tug and pull stress on the yoyo

  • @TheSuperspudnik - Anything with some elasticity should help.

  • @ttenni thanks cause im buyin some at cabelas saturday

  • Next time speak a little softer and sit a little further. I can still hear you speak.

  • VERY INFORMATIVE!!! Thanks for sharing.

  • @gardener2go22 I would not spray them with anything on account of scent. In fact, they have a light oily coat right out of the box. I wash mine in the sink with a little detergent before I even use them. They're galvanized sheet metal. They lose their shine quickly in the weather, but don't rust. Some brands have "stainless" springs, while others do not. The non-stainless springs will rust a little, but not bad. Stay away from the orange plastic yo yos. They're crap!!!

  • @gardener2go22 Yo yos come loaded with approx 10' of 60-lb test twisted nylon line. The spring on a yo yo is designed such that it will only wind and hold tension on about 10 ft of line. You can add a leader, but there's not a lot of point unless you trim off an equal amount of the nylon. Otherwise, there won't be any tension on the leader. A mono-filament leader might be useful for line-wary fish. A wire leader might be useful for fish with sharp teeth. None is needed for catfish.

  • limited to ten foot of line?!?!? why cant you attach a longer "leader" to the end of it .. like if i was using this for trout i wouldnt want the thick black line anywhere near my bait...i would add 6 foot or so of 4 lb test and put my hook and bait on that.. that would also keep your yo yo line out of the water to keep it from rotting over years of use..

and i just watched a vid catching some huge catfish on these so i dont think they will break

BTW-i JUST bought some-and this vid helped me!!!

  • @SPADED1269 You can add a leader. However, the spring of the yo yo will only wind so many turns and thus only apply tension to the amount of line which equates to those turns - about 10 ft. If you add a 4 ft leader, there won't be any tension against the fish until he pulls out a foot of line on top of the leader. The yo yo line on the spool is white twisted 60 lb test nylon and doesn't rot. I only use thick black nylon for attaching the yo yos to limbs.

  • @ttenni i never thought of that ... good point.. like i said,i had JUST bought some of these and never actually had on in hand. my comments were more of questions not trying to tell you i know better than you.i was trolling thru vids thrying to see if they are something i could really get a use out of,but for ten bucks for 3 of em on ebay so why not.. thanks for the tips

  • @SPADED1269 You could always replace the yo yo's line with any kind you like as well.

  • @ttenni i got these for my BUG OUT BAG lol im not into the whole 2012 crap but i do like the idea of self reliance and thought these would be great if the shiiit hits the fan...i have lots of fishing line so its good to know i can put new line on them every few years for peace of mind- cant wait till the mail man brings em!

  • @ttenni Hey man i found an old yoyo in my shead that was my grandpaws and it has no string in it and i cant figure out how to replace it. i need help lol

  • @BDavisOutdoors Make sure the spring is intact. When looking at the face of the yo yo, will rotating it clockwise produce spring tension? Cut 10' of 60 lb test twisted nylon line. Tie one end to the spool of the yo yo. Wrap the line around the spool until there's only a few inches of line left. Thread the end of the line through the trigger mechanism and tie a swivel onto the terminal end. Pull about 1 ft of line out, hold spool with thumb, then wrap line around spool, then release.

  • @ttenni Just checked my inbox thanks so much!

  • @ttenni Oh and also i was looking on the back of it its called an whites auto fisher

  • where do you buy your yo yos?

  • @the1stfighter Walmart generally carries them in states where they're legal. You can find them also online. Try searching for "automatic fishing reel." Walmart in Arkansas sells them for around $27.50 per box of a dozen the last time I checked.

  • @ttenni Thanks for the help.

  • Thanks for taking the time to explain the yo yo I can't use them in massachusetts but very cool item anway!

  • im still looking itno all the legality but i figured theyd still be nice to keep around in a survival bag-if you got really crafty you could probably make a non lethal animal snare with one of these

  • extremely helpful in influencing my choice to get a set

    thank you

  • @nalday07 Make sure they're legal in your state. Some states don't allow them. Also, even in states where they're legal, there's a lot of variation in how many you can have out at one time, whether you have to stay with them, etc.

  • maybe another option to take some of the pressure off the yo yo would be to attatch it using a bungee cord. That would provide some give between the branch and the yo yo. Just a thought.

  • @badamson10 That will indeed work. I actually use rubber bungee straps on heavy set lines for flathead catfish. I usually tie such lines to heavy fallen timber. In such cases, the bungee really helps keep the fish from tearing the hook out of their mouth. Something that heavy might be a bit overkill for a yo-yo.

  • GREAT VIDS

  • @skullslinger3 Yo yos can be purchased from Walmart in boxes of 1-dozen for around $28. You can find sellers on-line that sell them in 1 or 3-packs. EBay is a good option for buying them individually.

  • so normally you would catch like 5~10 lbs fish with this but it is possible to catch like say a 20 lb fish? not likely but possible right?

  • @panzuman I catch 5-10 lb channel cats all the time on yo yos and a few regularly up to around 15 lbs. Above that, you're gonna have a lot of torn up yo yos. I once caught a 25 lb flathead cat on a yo yo. When I found him, the yo yo was bent all up and nearly destroyed. If I'd come along 30 minutes later, he'd been gone. The one thing I can't emphasize enough is, the "springier" the limb to attach your yo yo to, the bigger fish you'll hold without tearing something up.

  • @ttenni wow thats amazing i need to practice like this for when me and my friend go camping

  • @panzuman I've started baiting with 4" live bream, which are large enough to trip yo yos. So, I've pretty much started using limb lines, rather than yo yos. I'm using #12 nylon (106 lb test) where as yo yos have 60 lb test line. I use larger hooks and swivels too. I'm catching and holding much bigger cats. Caught a 42.3 lb flathead on such a limb line 1-1/2 months ago. They're cheap to make, costing virtually nothing.

  • Not sure if these will work in Australia? I have ordered a couple on Ebay to find out. Thanks for the tips on how to use these.

  • @aussiesurvivalist Obviously, there's a limit to how large a fish they'll hold. Most have about 60 lb test nylon. Tie to limbs with some give when possible - makes a huge difference in keeping larger fish from destroying the yo yo. Furthermore, if you're likely do be catching fish with sharp teeth, you may want to use some sort of 9" wire leader on the terminal end of the line. Good luck. Let me know what you catch!!!

  • great vid, thanks for sharing.

  • The tip on putting the yoyo on a branch to absorb shock was great!!!

  • Great video. I was thinking about getting a few and now im sold. I was also thinking you could attach a small spring in between the yo yo and the rope you tie it off with just in case you cant find a tree limb springy enough. Like i said great video, very informative.

  • @yardboss1987 I've used things like pieces of elastic bungee chord for the same purpose. Spring should work just fine.

  • what is the max size fish you can catch on this?

  • Pretty much all yo yos come loaded with about 60-lb test nylon line and typically an undersized swivel. They'll hold any crappie or bream species. There's obviously a limit to how large a catfish you're gonna hold. I replace the swivel with a larger one before using the yo yo. I catch 12-14 lb catfish routinely with yo yos hung from "springy" limbs. My personal record is a 25-lb flathead catfish. He would have shreaded the yo yo if I hadn't gotten him off quickly. Springy limbs are key!!!

  • If you tie your yo yos to a rigid limb or stump, they probably won't last the night with a 7-8 lb cat on. A springy limb keeps the fish from hammering the yo yo to pieces at the moment the line runs out to the full extent and comes to an abrupt stop. Springy limb = shock absorber!!! I've fished yo yos for years and can't stress this enough.

  • As of today, I've had 84,412 views on my videos. You're the first to complain about the volume. I guess the other 84,411 realized they had a volume control on their speakers.

  • Good stuff thanks !

  • do you use circle hooks on ur yo yos?

  • Yes, I do. I like the way circle hooks almost always hook the fish in the corner of the mouth. I was afraid initially that I might be losing fish, given that you're not supposed to have to "set" a circle hook. However, after experimenting a lot, I've convinced myself that circle and more traditional "J" style hooks catch about the same number of fish. I just "gut hook" fewer with circles. Plus, it's a lot easier to get the fish off, as you're not having to dig for the hook.

  • hey ttenni, i like fishin yoyo too, check out my jugfishing with a yoyo. In my opinion the whites brand of yoyo(wire catch) has a better trigger, better than the teeter totter. I am looking for one of the really old yoyos, they had a yellow or red plastic cover and were larger( and louder) than todays yoyos.

  • Even the old ones I've seen are pretty much like what's available today. I so wish somebody made a really humongous yo yo that would be suitable for catching large flatheads and blues.

  • thats awsome c my trappinging vids on my channel

  • cool! whats the biggest thing youv ever caughten off of one what bait what fish and most of all what type

  • The fish I'm holding in my profile picture was caught on a yo yo. It was a 25 lb flathead, caught on a large golden shiner minnow. I must have come along pretty quick after he was caught, otherwise the yo yo would have been destroyed in a very short time.

  • good thing you got there in time lol how do you clean and cook your fish all people have diffrent styles

  • I fillet catfish and deep fry with some sort of seasoned coating. There are many different brands in stores. My favorite is Zatarain's New Orleans Seasoned Fish Fry Breading Mix. It comes in a blue & yellow plastic bag.

  • mmmmmmmmm when can i come over for dinner

  • I have saw yoyo befor but never have use them yet but ill have to gice them a try some time

  • There's nothing quite as much fun as pulling up along side a shaking limb in the middle of the night, hearing that yo yo reeling in and out, and seeing the line cutting back and forth through the water!
