I remember this scene well - just before he sings this he had to walk down a long sloped platform and he fell and skated down on his backside. Then he stood up as if nothing happened and sang this.
He starts out tight and is pushing all the way.Changing the position of the vowels&squeezing, which is preventing him to round out his phrases. He is also short of breath. But he ends with a good B-flat which is helped by audio enhancement. This role is just too large for him.Does the KING have clothes or doesn't he?
such a passionate and powerful display Cavaradossi's committed love to Tosca. You can see the devout love flowing from Domingo. And the way closes epitomizes his voice control. Tooooooscaaa, cest tui!!!
This is how I discovered Tosca. In my cousin's apt in Rome, I was 12 and she played this movie for me. I still remember my mom coming in to check on me to find me sobbing. Domingo is no longer my favorite Cavaradossi, since I discovered Di Stefano... but he's still my #2.
In the original live version, he sing a quite good high B, but, although Zubin Meta is satisfied, Domingo is'nt and prefer sing again the last part of the aria in studio. So, the 1992 direct broadcast is a bit different then the DVD version)
The best Bass perform of all versions of this aria,to me is Roberto Algna's acting in this aria, and the bass into it...awesome...This bass have no life in his voice, like he's only talking...Bass is the bass, the low rang of voice! :))) ;)
@flautist Agreed. I can never make uo my mind which one I like more, but I'll say this - I think that Pavarotti was dinitely more suited to the lyric roles, but Domingo totally owns the dramatic tenor repertoire.
@witness124 I think that you are partially accurate. Pavarotti is more suited for the lyric roles. However, Domingo is a lyric spinto tenor at best& to say that he owns the dramatic repertoire is a real stretch of the imagination, even for a devoted fan.Dramatic is Delmonaco, Merli, Zenatello Tamagno Vickers Paoli Piccaluga Martinelli.Spinto, is Corelli Tucker, Lauri Volpi,Fillipeschi, Pertile,Fleta. All these tenors in the spinto category were more suited for Dramatic roles than Domingo.
certainly Domingo had one of the most beautiful tenor voices, (for his voice was that of half tenor-half baritone), still his performance is sharp and not enough "felt", I mean he could interpret Cavaradossi better, than just use his routine positions. There are plenty of better recordings...
could you all please, by the way, listen to the leading Polish tenor of late 60-ties and 70-ties, Roman Węgrzyn, and express your opinion? thanks!
This years talent show happened again ( only thing now is I'm 18) and Im going to post the video of me singing Shenandoah. It will be posted on February 21. Check it out and tell me what I need to work on, or if I have improved in a year! :)
He's a good Cavaradossi, though he is singing sharp through most of this aria. I still think nobody beats Bjoerling for sheer beauty of sound and perfection of technique ... none of the "tenor grunt" that often occurs with Domingo and other large voices at the end of the line, when the diaphragm suddenly releases.
Indeed. Moreover, the tape is not as in the original: Domingo had to sing the high notes from 2:17 again, since in the original performance they were horribly delivered (you can realise this if you listen carefully to the strangely abrupt ending of the aria)
Love the old sacrastan washing the paintbrushes in the background. Loosely interpreted, he's imploring Mario to "paint only the heathens, and leave the saints alone".
In some circles in old Europe, it was considered a sacrilege to "debase" a saint by painting his/her portrait. The old sacrastan is reminding Cavaradossi of this, as he looks on the portrait he painted of Mary Magdaline.
It's not true. Not in Italy anyway. "Scherza coi fanti e lascia stare i santi" is a proverb that means, more or less, that you may joke with unimportant people ( fanti, that means simple soldiers) but not with your superiors (santi = saints, intending important people). I think that "fanti" and "santi" are choosen because of the rhyme, not for else.
I remember this scene well - just before he sings this he had to walk down a long sloped platform and he fell and skated down on his backside. Then he stood up as if nothing happened and sang this.

The best TENOR...the worst BASS vocal I've ever heard :...
BatoBFlex 2 years ago
I disagree about the bass part. The flat voice is the character of the role. I think he did great.
And of course Domingo is awesome. The role suits him better than it does for Pavarotti.

De Stefano has always been my favorite Cavaradossi. Domingo has great stage presence, but he's terribly out of tune on this.
He was capable of so much better than this performance.
