That's why soldiers learned that and carried a spare empty clip around their neck. They threw the spare empty clip from their neck onto a rock while their Garand was fully loaded, causing the enemy to jump right in front of a loaded gun.
@killyouin1punch absolutely impractical. Excellent weapon no doubt but the clip sound is just wrong and something should have been done to correct this problem.
@Ouija121085 I'm not saying our boys' using a decoy clip sound was impractical, I'm saying it happened and it was very effective. There's not much arguing with success when the M1 Garand and Thompson helped carried our boys to victory. Clearly there was a great benefit to having them otherwise they wouldn't have been used to win WW2 and be used in future wars.
Especially used in future wars against our own boys too.
I don't know why you are still arguing this. If you are on a battlefield, and you are by yourself, you have FAR more to worry about than a ping sound 50 times quieter than your last gunshot. Both of which happened at the same time.
Have you ever been around a Garand actually being fired? If your beyond bayonet range you aren't going to hear that ping. Even without a battle roaring around you. The enemy is more likely to see you are out than to hear it.
I have one of these (obviously since I'm the trigger man in the video) and you cannot hear it more than a few feet away. It's not that loud, and it happens as the last round is fired. If an enemy were close enough to hear it he was shot because it's basically point blank range, or he was bayoneted shortly afterwards.
@ytykg depends on what kind of situation is going on... for example this nice cling could tell the enemy that a person is going to spend 3-5 seconds reloading the weapon and not fireing at you which gives you the opprotunity to throw a granade or move in for better position. Never give your enemy an idea that you are out of ammo at any point ever.
He's not going to hear it. This is the same Garand from ten feet away.
/watch?v=MroRQdb7r5s
Do you hear anything there? Now imagine the roar of machine gun fire, explosions, and other rifles going off! If he was close enough to hear it, and toss a grenade, it would kill him too! If he "moved to a better position" your buddy would shoot him since it would be point blank range. The loud "ping" is a myth created by movie sound houses. I'm done explaining. I won't try again.
@Ouija121085 they used it to their advantages, they would have empty garand ammunition so they would drop them tricking enemies to come out of their cover (which you will proceed to shoot him)
@Ouija121085 The ping was more noticed during close combat. House clearing, etc, etc... Once the Germans caught on about the "ping" the GIs would pop off a couple of rounds, take an empty embloc clip and throw it down on the ground causing the "ping" The German would pop his head out thinking the American was empty only to find an American with his rifle ready. Boooommm!!
@brycom1 House clearing?! Do you know what that gun would do to your ears with all the noise reverberating off the walls and such. You would be glad if you could hear the Ping.
@Yachera Yes, house clearing! Unlike most of you youtube commandos I actually own a M1 and not only do I own it, but I built it. I have happened to fire 2 entire emblocs with out ear protection. My ears rang for a day and half but I still heard the ping. I can also hear the ping from other shooters during shooting competitions with hearing protection on. Are you going to hear it in the heat of battle?? NO! But can you hear it if its you and one other enemy close by. Yes.
@Yachera Has this been a story thats been hyped up over the years. Probably. But I bet you a dollar that there have been instances where enemies were "notified" that their foe was now empty. Luckily the M1 can be loaded super quick!!!
@brycom1 they're have been incidents of this, they're extremely rare, (much more rare than the US troops using the 1-2 second delay in the bolt cycling of the Mausers to kill the Germans troops) all were in room clearing combat, or close combat 1 on 1, but odds are that the German would be long dead before the last shot was fired, Americans are great shots
@brycom1 and that trick only happened when it was 1 vs 1 in extreme close combat, the Germans wouldnt pop their head up if 1 out of 2 or so Americans were out. In fact many times the German would hear the sound and use that as a way to escape and put more distance between them and the American, because the semi-auto M-1 is better in close quarters than the German bolt action Mauser rifle, they were instructed to keep as much distance between forces as possible
@Ouija121085 wow and two idiots actually liked this retard of a comment? how exactly would the enemy know what gun went PING when the whole squad it shooting at you? jesus think before you type.

For a second there I thought I was going to see J.Edgar Hoover getting wasted but I suppose that was cool too. Should of put a dress on it for added comedic effect...
I shouldered the rifle and tilted my head to the left. My friend then pointed the camera over my shoulder, and told me everything was lined up. I never actually aimed myself. I adjusted the rifle as I watched each impact on the Hoover.
if any one won the war it was the soviets seem as how they were the ones to take germanys parlimentry building not the bbritish or YANKS john wayne.
@therealflyingace No actually if read anything we let the soviets have Berlin because the generals on our side (Yes John Wayne's side!) because taking the city would cause major casualties.
@therealflyingace The kick is harsh.....IF YOU'RE A TOTAL PUSSY! I could shoot mine all day and be fine. The enfield is good, but semi auto is better in combat simply because of the ability to fire quickly when needed.
@PickofDestiny08 Semi-auto is better in combat? In my opinion, that function was totally unnecessary in a rifle. You want semi-auto fire? Use a submachine gun. If you can't do it in one bullet, don't do it at all. The Lee-Enfield was almost half a century old even before WW2 started. If that isn't a tribute to it's excellent design, I don't know what is.The Garand, by comparison, was mostly phased out well before the Vietnam war. It was in service for less than 20 years.
@ThunderCracker26 Then I guess that's Britain's fault (keeping a bolt action rifle for so long when the could've updated). And also, why do you think that bolt action rifle's aren't standard issue to infantry any more? The Garand's accuracy and it's 30-06 bullet are more than enough to take someone down in a single shot. I was saying, in combat semi auto is far better for when one has to, clear rooms for example (yes even riflemen had to do this).
@PickofDestiny08 It wasn't "Britain's fault". The Lee-Enfield was an excellent design, which got through 2 world wars with only minor modification. There was no need for a semi-auto rifle. I know why bolt actions aren't issued any more. It's because of the development of the Assault Rifle, which can do the job of both a Rifle and Submachine Gun in one weapon. We can thank the Germans for that concept.
How well are you going to do house clearing with a bolt action? City fighting is common in modern warfare, and so is long range combat in areas like Afghanistan.
Carrying a sub machine gun and a rifle makes no sense. You have double the weight, and double the ammunition. Why do that when you can have weapon that gives you long range, and close quarter combat ability.
The M14 is based on the M1 and is still in service as a DMR by the US military. Who still uses the Enfield?
@ytykg I wasn't suggesting a soldier carries both a rifle and a submachine gun. I was just saying a submachine gun was better for semi / full auto fire. In actual fact, the best weapon for both longer range and close in fighting is the assault rifle, first deployed by the Germans in the form of the STG44. Any who still uses the Lee-Enfield? It's still in use by some 2nd / 3rd world countries, such as Pakistan and India. It wasn't phased out a a sniper rifle in the British army until the 1980s.
The Garand is also used by many third world militaries, seen most recently in footage from Haiti.
They use assault rifles instead of sub-machine guns and rifles, because it makes sense. However you said in an earlier post that if you need rapid fire, use a SMG. Which is why I replied with that. Combat has too many variables to have one.
The M14 is a Garand with a box mag, and a smaller cartridge. It is still used by the US military 76 years after the initial design was accepted.
If you combine the service history of the M1, and 14. Which I think is fair since the Enfield was modernized as time went on as well (No.4, No.5, etc). You have a service life of 74 years, and still going (1936-present).
@ThunderCracker26 I tried giving a good example. Ok, here's another, if there are multiple targets (lets say 3) all armed and ready, and you have a bolt action rifle, there's no way you could put down the fire as quickly as you could with a gas operated rifle. Be slow be killed. Does that make more sense? Also, you said the Garand has heavy recoil. No, just no. My 13 year old cousin (a girl) could handle the recoin no prob
@PickofDestiny08 Actually, I didn't say the Garand has a heavy recoil. I hear it's fairly tame in that department. However, to address your latest point: speed of fire. A trained man using a Lee-Enfield can do wht they called a "mad minute" in the wars. That means he can get off anywhere between 25-40 AIMEDn shots in 60 seconds. Now, no doubt, a Garand will fire more quickly than that. However, I've seen Lee-Enfield owners getting off 5 shots in less than 5 seconds. Check other YouTube vids.
@ThunderCracker26 I apollogize, I got you mixed up with flyingrace.Right, I do know of the mad minute, however this still is snuffed by the garand, if you watch R. Lee Ermey's new show they test this (it's the combat rifle episode). As far as combat goes, they're both great rifles (accurate and reliable). I just prefer the Garand.
@PickofDestiny08 Look, I'm not saying one is better than the other. All I'm saying is that I don't think semi-auto fire in a rifle is necessarily beneficial. I salute a fellow rifle-nut.
@PickofDestiny08 Here, search in YouTube under this title "Enfield rifle NO4, speed shoot". There, you will see a man firing a Lee-Enfield bolt action rifle just as quickly as the Garand in this video. He's aiming, too. Remember, a rifle is only as accurate and effective as the reciol will allow. You may have semi-auto fire, but if it ain't on target, forget it. It's just a fancy boom stick.
@therealflyingace maybe it's because the either the camera was on his shoulder, he was firing from the hip or he was just firing fast for entertainment.
@TheAngryRooster The recoil isnt high, its the way he was holding it and balancing a camera that made it just around so much, normally the M1 has relativly light recoil, from the gas operation.
GoldenEyeKnuckles Remmington did not make an M1 Garand. They were made by Winchester and Springfield for WWII. International Harvester and Harrington Richardson also made M1's but they didn't have any ready until after WWII. They did use all 4 manufactures in Korea and the beginning of Vietnam.
Amazing, sturdy gun. Way ahead of its time.
If you ever shoot this thing, you'd know why they used it in WW2. It feels powerful. You just don't want to the on the other end of it.

If you ran out, and the enemy actually heard it over the roar of battle, your buddy would gun down the idiot that decided to stick his head up.
That is one of the worst urban legends about these. It simply didn't happen. If it did it was an isolated incident.

If I could offer a quote by Allan Quartermain from "The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen"
"Oh, I saw. Very American. Fire enough bullets and hope to hit the target."
Never sacrifice accuracy for weight of fire. Give me a Lee-Enfield over any other rifle. That's how a European shoots.

36MonkeysThatFly 1 year ago
what a shit weapon not very acurate and the kick is harsh the kar 98k was better but the enfield still outrates them all.
therealflyingace 1 year ago
@therealflyingace
I own all three, and I'd take the Garand over the other two any day, but to each his own.
ytykg 1 year ago
@therealflyingace
really cause according to ww2 the garand helped with the invasion of Germany.
not to mention we won the fucking war.
voice5751 1 year ago
if any one won the war it was the soviets seem as how they were the ones to take germanys parlimentry building not the bbritish or YANKS john wayne.
therealflyingace 1 year ago
@therealflyingace
yea dont forget there was an alliance soviets couldnt have done it alone.
Or else it wouldnt have gone down like it did.
voice5751 1 year ago
@therealflyingace No actually if read anything we let the soviets have Berlin because the generals on our side (Yes John Wayne's side!) because taking the city would cause major casualties.

@therealflyingace You're kidding, right?
sandcrab132 1 year ago
@therealflyingace The kick is harsh.....IF YOU'RE A TOTAL PUSSY! I could shoot mine all day and be fine. The enfield is good, but semi auto is better in combat simply because of the ability to fire quickly when needed.
PickofDestiny08 1 year ago
@PickofDestiny08 Semi-auto is better in combat? In my opinion, that function was totally unnecessary in a rifle. You want semi-auto fire? Use a submachine gun. If you can't do it in one bullet, don't do it at all. The Lee-Enfield was almost half a century old even before WW2 started. If that isn't a tribute to it's excellent design, I don't know what is.The Garand, by comparison, was mostly phased out well before the Vietnam war. It was in service for less than 20 years.
ThunderCracker26 1 year ago
@ThunderCracker26 Then I guess that's Britain's fault (keeping a bolt action rifle for so long when the could've updated). And also, why do you think that bolt action rifle's aren't standard issue to infantry any more? The Garand's accuracy and it's 30-06 bullet are more than enough to take someone down in a single shot. I was saying, in combat semi auto is far better for when one has to, clear rooms for example (yes even riflemen had to do this).
PickofDestiny08 1 year ago
@PickofDestiny08 It wasn't "Britain's fault". The Lee-Enfield was an excellent design, which got through 2 world wars with only minor modification. There was no need for a semi-auto rifle. I know why bolt actions aren't issued any more. It's because of the development of the Assault Rifle, which can do the job of both a Rifle and Submachine Gun in one weapon. We can thank the Germans for that concept.
ThunderCracker26 1 year ago
@ThunderCracker26 actually the Garand went from 1936-1963 which gives it about 27 years.
Mike82A1 1 year ago
@Mike82A1 Ok, I was close. My point about the Lee-Enfield's far longer service life still stands though...
ThunderCracker26 1 year ago
@ThunderCracker26
Who still uses the Enfield?
ytykg 1 year ago
@ytykg I wasn't suggesting a soldier carries both a rifle and a submachine gun. I was just saying a submachine gun was better for semi / full auto fire. In actual fact, the best weapon for both longer range and close in fighting is the assault rifle, first deployed by the Germans in the form of the STG44. Any who still uses the Lee-Enfield? It's still in use by some 2nd / 3rd world countries, such as Pakistan and India. It wasn't phased out a a sniper rifle in the British army until the 1980s.
ThunderCracker26 1 year ago
The Garand is also used by many third world militaries, seen most recently in footage from Haiti.
They use assault rifles instead of sub-machine guns and rifles, because it makes sense. However you said in an earlier post that if you need rapid fire, use a SMG. Which is why I replied with that. Combat has too many variables to have one.
The M14 is a Garand with a box mag, and a smaller cartridge. It is still used by the US military 76 years after the initial design was accepted.
ytykg 1 year ago
@ThunderCracker26
If you combine the service history of the M1, and 14. Which I think is fair since the Enfield was modernized as time went on as well (No.4, No.5, etc). You have a service life of 74 years, and still going (1936-present).
ytykg 1 year ago
@ThunderCracker26 I tried giving a good example. Ok, here's another, if there are multiple targets (lets say 3) all armed and ready, and you have a bolt action rifle, there's no way you could put down the fire as quickly as you could with a gas operated rifle. Be slow be killed. Does that make more sense? Also, you said the Garand has heavy recoil. No, just no. My 13 year old cousin (a girl) could handle the recoin no prob
PickofDestiny08 1 year ago
@PickofDestiny08 Actually, I didn't say the Garand has a heavy recoil. I hear it's fairly tame in that department. However, to address your latest point: speed of fire. A trained man using a Lee-Enfield can do wht they called a "mad minute" in the wars. That means he can get off anywhere between 25-40 AIMEDn shots in 60 seconds. Now, no doubt, a Garand will fire more quickly than that. However, I've seen Lee-Enfield owners getting off 5 shots in less than 5 seconds. Check other YouTube vids.
ThunderCracker26 1 year ago
@ThunderCracker26 I apollogize, I got you mixed up with flyingrace.Right, I do know of the mad minute, however this still is snuffed by the garand, if you watch R. Lee Ermey's new show they test this (it's the combat rifle episode). As far as combat goes, they're both great rifles (accurate and reliable). I just prefer the Garand.
PickofDestiny08 1 year ago
@PickofDestiny08 Look, I'm not saying one is better than the other. All I'm saying is that I don't think semi-auto fire in a rifle is necessarily beneficial. I salute a fellow rifle-nut.
ThunderCracker26 1 year ago
@ThunderCracker26 and, just for fun, check this out "Luger P-08 pistol, old school shooting" It's the same mad English ex-para firing a Luger. Lol.
ThunderCracker26 1 year ago
@PickofDestiny08 Here, search in YouTube under this title "Enfield rifle NO4, speed shoot". There, you will see a man firing a Lee-Enfield bolt action rifle just as quickly as the Garand in this video. He's aiming, too. Remember, a rifle is only as accurate and effective as the reciol will allow. You may have semi-auto fire, but if it ain't on target, forget it. It's just a fancy boom stick.
ThunderCracker26 1 year ago
@therealflyingace maybe it's because the either the camera was on his shoulder, he was firing from the hip or he was just firing fast for entertainment.

The m1 garand great stopping power, fair rate of fire but high recoil making it slightly inaccurate
TheAngryRooster 1 year ago
@TheAngryRooster The recoil isnt high, its the way he was holding it and balancing a camera that made it just around so much, normally the M1 has relativly light recoil, from the gas operation.

GoldenEyeKnuckles Remmington did not make an M1 Garand. They were made by Winchester and Springfield for WWII. International Harvester and Harrington Richardson also made M1's but they didn't have any ready until after WWII. They did use all 4 manufactures in Korea and the beginning of Vietnam.
