I watched the American Music Awards last night and got up hundreds of times for various reasons. Right now, I'm listening to this Karen Dalton song and I have to take a wicked piss. It's been about an hour of listening. But I keep saying, just one more Karen Dalton song and then I'll get up and go to pee. I think I found some new ways to sit. Karen -- you're worth it. Singers on AMA's just can't compete. Thanks for leaving these tunes behind to remind us how very special you were.
Does anybody else think that the backing on the first track is ripped from Fairport Convention - esp Who Knows Where thr Time Goes - or is Richard Thompson jamming here
This woman is GREAT. Yes, yes, yes I can hear the Billie Holiday similarities but it's no imitation. Karen's what Billie Holiday may have been past 1959. In many ways everything she sings retains a Karen Dalton originality throughout. Years after Ms Dalton's passing I wonder how she ever went unnoticed by me. Even Dylan thought she was one of the best. I agree for sure.
Wow- what a voice, what a natural beauty she is! For me she is really strong although her life seems to be tragic- but in her voice I feel an ocean of passion, power and surrender: not half, total... Found her through Devendra Banhart- and I am happy that I may enjoy this strong musical flame now!
Not the sort for keeping favourites, but there is something of the ethereal in the performance of particularly 'Something On Your Mind', Dalton just plucked it from somewhere else, somewhere other songs don't come from. It'll do me nicely on my desert island.
I read most of her recordings required only one straight studio performance, which verges on the unbelievable after listening to these two. Very special stuff, and sad to think of her terrible premature demise.
I shall always be glad I saw Margot at the Wedding, because otherwise I might never have heard this song; I've never heard it played on UK radio. Hearing it over the closing credits stopped me in my tracks. That said, the film itself was pretty standard American pseudo-independent cinema fare.
I too heard it too the end of the movie Margot at the wedding. Never heard of her. Was captued by her vice. looked up in filmscredits. I assume she is no longer with us. #What happend?
Good Lord, this is amazing! by some stroke of luck, I heard this song yesterday playing under the end-credits of some terrible movie- "Margot at the Wedding" I think. so glad I heard it! so glad you posted it! thanks alot.
I saw the movie "Margot at the Wedding" with Nicole Kidman among others. Quite bad movie, but I let the the end title text roll on while I left the room. In the kitchen I heard from my living room the most beautiful voice I ever heard and ran to the room and listened to the song ("Something on your mind"), I was stunned. I am "only" 28 years old and haven't, despite I like Dylan, Baez and music from that era, heard about Karen before that. I ordered all of her CD's and I'm in love in her voice!
That's how I discovered Karen but I disagree I LOVE "Margot at the Wedding." I think it's timeless & classic. Karen's voice is haunting, can't wait to get her albums.
i likes this girl reel good did i see that she has died she has very speshal gift in her luffly buzz ofa her spins ya along wi her an gives ya reel nice felin from her music ---kilby----
What a fearless singer. She pushes her voice to the breaking point and goes a bit more, the broken heart driving a broken voice. Then Karen picks up the broken pieces to assemble a beautiful mosaic of heartache. Sure, there is the semblance to Billie Holliday, but I can't help but think of how Van Morrison used his voice similar to a jazz saxophone. Close your eyes and listen to the sound, forget the words. Listen to the voice as an instrument.

Probably the best "jazz" folk singer in American history. A national treasure.

Bautiful, definitely some astral weeks-style violin work going on there. An exceptional performance.
