Amputations did happen a lot but the amputee would not be concious except in extraordinary circumstances. Chloroform would be used to knock out the patient before surgery.

They didn't have proper hospitals and medicine back then so if a bullet hit your arm, doctors may have to cut it off so the infection didn't spread.

This happened a lot actually.
They did not have the antibiotics we have today, so when someone got shot in the arm or leg, it came off. If someone got shot in the torso and lived, they were left to die, there was nothing that could be done for them.

well depends on where you got shot. if it didnt hit the bone then you dont loose and arm or leg, same for torso. they would still opperate to have a chance to save em but mostly proved fatal
