Nice video. Certainly representative of the vast majority of TORONTONIANS who have been encouraged by all levels of government over the past few decades to move more sustainably within our city. Sadly however much of the hard-earned, long promised cycling-safer infrastructure we were promised ten years ago has not materialized and subsequent municipal regimes have failed miserably to serve the citizens these self-absorbed politicians of various stripes were/are sworn to protect.

Your stupid video proves only that cyclist's lack reason and intelligence, if you think it shows that cyclists arent rude, scummy people. Every reasonable person is society is annoyed by these idiots who like to be in the way of regular people trying to do our jobs. Cycling is recreational (for those of us who have not had our licence's taken away for drinking) and should be done in parks and such. I like that you made this video, It really highlights your lack of insight.
@fukyourselves As a lifetime Torontonian great-grandfather who has never driven a car but has spent the last FIFTY years walking and riding this city's streets, it would seem obvious to any rationally engaged citizen just who the idiot is here.
@alessioxvx - The Toronto Star is well known to be birdcage liner, on par with crap that Rupert Murdoch produces. It makes the Toronto Mop and Pail look credible.
Wait a second... So you actually edited 34 hours of footage to demonstrate 4 minutes of polite biking? Calming music doesn't help. I don't think i've ever driven downtown without getting aggressively cut off by an idiot on a bike with no helmet like these people you display.
Well living in Toronto and being a driver I can say that I haven’t encountered allot of problems with bikes in the bike lanes. However, many tend not to follow any laws. I believe you filmed a very common road (queen st) if I’m not mistaken which does tend to have a very bike oriented community. I believe the paper you are quoting is most likely referring to bike couriers that would rather smash there bike lock on your windshield rather than obey any law or person
@MrRokNRoll I think its reckless to be a rude and your behaving like a cyclist. Rude by slowing down my truck by acting like you own the road. My gas taxes pay for road infrastructure, please have some respect for my road. I call it "The Little Bump Law" and it's just to kindly warn the cyclist to move over, the road is mine and thank you for visiting. I'm sure most cyclists would agree with the law.
@davejsmith just so we're clear....bicycles are motor vehicles under the law and local roads (vs highways) are not in fact paid for by gas taxes & vehicular taxes, so since peds & cyclists all pay property taxes and income taxes they are fully justified in using these roads to the full extent provided by law. And I'd be very careful about trying the bump, you might seriously injure or kill somebody and you'd be hard pressed to call it an accident now that you've advertised your intent here.
@davejsmith In case of rude cyclists, by all means, go ahead. However, gas taxes barely cover the government subsidies for gas, if even that. We all pay taxes, so where the law allows cycling, everyone should share the damn road and follow the f%*!ng law. And your comment on "behaving like a cyclist"? No wonder they're all after you.
@weekstooshort The millions in subsidies that are currently directed towards oil companies instead of road infrastructure... the government needs to correct the flow of money.
I find it hilarious that in 3:14-3:25 you see 100% of the cyclist running the stop sign.
As a new Bixi-er, I'm new to the cycling community, and still, when I'm a pedestrian, I am scared shitless of being run over by a cyclist at a stop sign or making a right turn.
Honestly I dislike (most not all) the cycles in Toronto, I don't actually drive in the city, I walk and but I have been almost plowed into by careless cyclists on many occasions.
When I cross a street I'm more concerned about Cyclists then cars. (-____-')
@MrRokNRoll lol when some dick wad gets on the road and slows down traffic, everyone feels like a little bump is in order. That should be the law... bumps are ok.
This video proves absolutely nothing, you edited 30 mins of footage of random people riding their bikes on random parts of the street, with corny music in the back ground. Now if you set you camera up at an intersection for 30 mins then it would be a different story. If you were trying to sway anyone to believe that all bikers perfect on the road then you failed...miserably might I add.
I gotta say driving downtown toronto isnt as convenient when their is bikers, that being said its really the fault of city planning and bad people in cars and on bikes. Where it is necessary for a truck to stop to make deliveries there really isnt much places he can park. There are probably more bad drivers than bad bikers, simply because there are more drivers, like that taxi who cut of the biker. Alot of drivers dont signal, so I dont expect all bikers either.
hmm lets see, some with no bike helmets (illegal) only one guy in the entire video using a hand signal (while not wearing a helmet) (illegal) riding two abreast (illegal) wearing audio devices (illegal) some bikes no reflective devices (illegal) some wearing open toed foot wear while not illegal is stupid dangerous. While i commend you on choosing alternative transport if you want to be afforded all the courtesy of other drivers you have to obey ALL the rules of the road.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So let me get this straight...you and a bunch of your friends decide to go out for a bike ride, some without helmets might I add, and stop at a bunch of red lights (as you are supposed to ).
And somehow this proves ALL bike riders don't run lights?
Now, while I appreciate people taking advantage of alternative transits, I find this video idiotic and meaningless.
@ehtax Helmets aren't mandatory here. There are plenty of jerks on bikes, in cars and on feet. This video merely shows that not all bicyclists are inconsiderate.
PS: I find your comment to be meaningless and idiotic.
@ehtax I've biked in Toronto downtown for years and the footage is obviously genuine but the reality is there are plenty of cyclists with dangerous bad habits even during rush hour but of course he wasn't looking for those cyclists. My complaint is... You wouldn't defend cars that speed through school zones by going and filming a bunch of good drivers would you? So why do cyclists point the finger in another direction instead of dealing with the reality of inconsiderate cyclists?
@ehtax This happens every day on College Street, eh pal? It is obvious to all reading your comment just what constitutes idiocy and meaninglessness. If you would care to share in such knowledge, just check the nearest mirror. ( :-)
So what ... you gathered up your 5 friends and said "Ok everyone follow the rules and I will record it" ............ So this is basically just a lie. You are a liar.
I live in Edmonton and id say only 20% of cyclists actually ride properly. The rest don't stop at stop signs or lights, ride across crosswalks, go onto the sidewalk then back onto the road. Then the bike lanes that are here many don't even use them. The majority of cyclists are morons it isn't a misconception. They are endangering themselves and everyone around them.
@Prairielander lol is this really your statement for bikers not being on the road. First anybody who drives a gas car has no say. I don't bike on the road much but when i do and this is not on the really main streets just the kinda main ones i go from road to sidewalk why not im not hurting anyone? Im helping the world by biking and driving are hurting it by driving so of course cars wait bikes don't . I would not do this on a main street though thats bad idea. theres lot more moron drivers.
@adetuyi420 It is illegal to ride your bicycle here on the sidewalk. When you cycle on the road you are considered another vehicle. You have to obey all signs and rules of the road. If you wish to use a crosswalk or a sidewalk you have to dismount. Cyclists are not pedestrians you do not have the right away but it is shared with other vehicles. By disobeying the rules of the road you are putting people at risk and that goes for motorists as well.
@adetuyi420 I didn't say cycling should be banned I just notice the majority do not follow the rules of the road and something should be done about it. Also by your statements and attitude it is clear how misinformed many cyclists are. I think bicycles should be insured and registered as other vehicles are and perhaps even licensing should be put forth. At least then I could report vehicle infractions I encounter and perhaps cyclists may take the rules more seriously and perhaps learn them.
@Prairielander If i went around writing up people for violations than i would have like 50 done within an hour from people driving cars whats your point? That when a biker does something wrong he dies or when a driver does something wrong both he and others can die. Yield to bikers because they are the better people on the road and thats it. You drive a car means you have no say. Mess with the environment you have no say in the matter. Give a hut don't pollute.
Drivers don't have to shout obscenities at cyclists to be inconsiderate and rude. All they have to do, is overtake and right-hook, overtake only to stop, drive aggressively close behind while hooting and revving their engines, pass too close at high speed. Plus all the rest. I expereience all this and more.
Afrayn182, I'd be happy to debunk your "conspiracy theory" by sending you the entire footage from my commute. If that helps you get off, I'd gladly provide you the footage
I love that the video is set up as a rebuttal to the Star's quoted figure of the number of cyclists who don't stop at red lights, and any time you show cyclists at a light, it's two seconds before it changes green. Thus negating the argument, as we don't know how many cyclists have blown past the line up of stopped bikes.
What this does show is how many cyclists are not wearing helmets.
Agreed, I'm not saying every cyclist is a saint. But I'm a bit fed up with the generalizations that paint all of us with the same brush, when the vast majority of us considerate of others. It's not hard to take a camera and find people doing stupid things (be it cyclists, motorists or pedestrians). This footage is just a regular daily commute. There is no filtering that makes it any less objective.
@theurbancountry Sorry bud, but the filtering is in your choice of locations. I like how you hung back from that 4-way stop at Beverley and Baldwin. Many a rush hour, particularly at the end of the day, have I seen cyclists (many and I would be tempted to say most) ride right through from all directions as though there was no stop sign at all and that with cars sitting & lined up at all 4 sides. That was a nice video you put together but it didn't exactly show the full picture. =propaganda

Interesting to see the single-file rule in parts of Ontario . $8.75 fine in Toronto but $53.75 in Scarborough
In the UK it's "more than two-abreast" which some drivers remember incorrectly as single-file.
