If I cut my hand into a cymbal or something while soloing or doing some fast breaks I don't find it as a bad technique. I feel like I'm alive, like I'm a part of the drum kit, I feel like confronting something. I'm not a masochist, but you know, it feels real and you shouldn't care about the pain when you put all of your heart into the playing. Well, I'm very young, so maybe it's because of it.. You get the point..
@ mrbateman00 ... maybe you are seeing percussionists from that point of view because you as the rest of us are on youtube where often times arguments get started over hogwash really ... i think that every music group can fight over something ... like what kind of pick-ups are the best or one ply vs two ply heads or what kind of saxophone is the best and so forth ... if you want to have an intelligent conversation with a percussionist i'd be happy to oblige your need ... (continued)...
@jonnyeis No. I'm a drummer. But really Im a musician first. It's like I'm white but really I'm just human, fuck the preconceptions, plus I can't stand most white people. The thing is it's music, there are NO rules. And for the most part it's sad but true, the only way to really get it is just by having it. It's very rare that people have a balanced perspective on something. You have to have gone so far w/ it to realize that you must always be a student (of music anyhow).
I would agree. Guitarist don't obsess over these things. They tend to concern themselves with real matters like, "What kind of hair spray should I use?" or " Are these pants tight enough? or " Can my girlfriend play the tamborine on this song?"
Reread last line of 1st paragraph. "Technique" "wood of the stick"? If you mean not using the stik like a knife then yes...ofcourse. Someone commented "but they (stiks) dent your heads. My point was heads dent.
I hate to be like this. However, your comment is exactly what I'm talking about. Drummers making comments or recorrecting on things that either don't make sense, are trivial or just incorrect - usually on some pretty obvious aspect of drumming. I don't think guitar players do this.
Simple physics. If you play hard don't use tiny sticks, or don't be concerned about "denting" heads. These are jazz sticks, play lighter, and your still gonna dent your heads.
Drummers are freakin goof balls. I don't think piano, guitar, bass any other type of musicians have as dumb a comments, seriously. It's always what kind of drums are those? I don't play em they suck. Or Erskine can't play like Peart. Or he can't play double pedal. It's all relative to style, sound and approach.
@mrbateman00 im a drummer, and ur comment in some points make alot of sense, im also tired of the stupid questions, so well done on speaking your mind
@spacitydrummer4JC Tony Williams used Vater 2Bs, and Victor Lewis actually uses Vic Firth 5Bs. It all depends on your touch, and what is meant by "jazz."
its the peter erskine ride stick that will dent your heads over time I play with a light approach. that stick is pointy but it sounds by far the best on a ride cymbal its my second favorite next to the sd4 & hd4
the only bad technique is if you hurt yourself when you play.. big words from the great Freddie Gruber.. now i understand why there is no correct or wrong, but only a reason to learn something the way that you are supposed to learn it.
The Erskine sticks are great. It's only going to dent your drum head if you set your drums up poorly. Try a flatter set up with your toms. I mean more level with the ground. It's tough to find a good setup on a lot of Pearl kits, but you can usually figure something out. It's not the sticks making dents, it's the setup and the player...
play a triplet god damn it, LOL, jk

Peter Erskine is an inspiration to me, I'd do anything to study with him.

I do not know guitarists who are concerned with that matters...but if you say so.
Look at Robert Fripp and his "Guitar Craft" lessons, he is pretty much concerned about teaching to hold the pick right..and that for hours...
