Wallis’ Position: I believe abortion is wrong – and that it kills an unborn human being but I think people should be allowed to kill unborn human beings.
@FreedomInAmerica : Actually, it's BIBLICAL. Read the Beautitudes. Then read Micah. Then do a search in the Bible for "unjust weights and measures" (i.e., economic ethics). Then read Leviticus regarding the treatment of "foreigners in your midst".
Then repent of your idol worship of America, over God.
dont care. Have secular organisations promote them then.
Then again I dont are what they do and who they help, federal dollars going to charities, particularly religious ones, defies the separation of church and state. There is no way of mincing words about that.
Churches have a special place in our society, and it should stay that way. The founders had great insight into what happens when church and state come together. We need to remember that, and if we dont, it comes at our own peril
of course, and people are welcome to go to charities for support. However, that DOESNT mean that MY tax dollars can possibly go to those same charities. Its not that im against helping poor people, I just want to maintain the separation of church and state. Government intervention in church organisations creates problems not only for the running of the church group, but for the government itself.
"trying something new" is great, lets just do it constitutionally.
And the only problem I see with obamas plan is that it is based off an unconstitutional policy in the first place. Because of that unconstitutional premise i am reluctant to even look at it.
Making sure these charities don't use the money to promote their Church.
I've seen it done before.
A couple of local churchs + a synagoge pooled their resources to open a free clinic the agreement being that their was to be no preeching at the clinic.
I've been their a couple of times (to help) and saw no evidence of evangelism and apparently neither has the Rabbi since he continues to promote the clinic.
ok, but i dont think it should be going to faith based charities in the first place. ill fight this tooth and nail, but ill keep tabs on it, especially if obama is true to his word on this.
I still hold to my previous statements on this though.

How does Jim Wallis know Jesus wouldn’t be for tax cuts?

"Progressive Christian" is an oxymoron.

State based secular social services are failing.
It's time to try something new.
FTR I want to see Obama's entire plan before I give it my stamp of approval.

That's going to be the big challenge isn't it?

There is in fact a constitutional way to do this though (apparently).
I mean, what did religious groups do before faith based initiatives?
I think this new thing obamas doing is perpetuating an unconstitutional executive order which perpetuates an unconstitutional policy.
Its just like the FISA law that the dems and obama support, what was wrong with the policies before these new ones were implemented?

I think I know what Obama's doing.
He's going to establish a faith based initiative which will give $500 yearly to select faith based charities.

Oh never mind.
I think this program is going to do good you don't.
We both plan to keep an eye on it.
