  • just started playing bass after playing electric guitar for a while... i suck

  • I tuned your moms G-string...

  • Кора

  • This bass buzzes like a motherfucker.

  • hold 1 for three seconds then let go

  • what if I don't have a thumb?

  • @xchocodonutsx use your dick

  • I don't get what the pun was :(

  • Hey yesterday I was playing alot of bass and I got a huge blister on my

Middle finger and a blood blister on my first finger witch apparently won't ever go is there anyway to play with my fingers and not get blisters after long amounts of playing ??? (btw this is on my right hand that I pluck with)

  • @xNoPiTyFoRaCoWaRDx1 cut your fingers then use you toes

  • 4:53 Wtf...

  • man u scare me when u turn O_O

  • your actually not supposed to put your thumb down its supposed to float over the strings and sometimes mute the lower strings but thats more of resulting feature. the reason you float your thumb is to 1) keep your wrist straight when playing higher strings 2) it allows you to change strings faster when moving from lower to higher strings and 3) you will actually get more power from your plucking fingers when your thumb not planted.

  • @bassplayer247 not only that it allows you to have more versatility in tone if you dont have to rely on your bass having the spots to put your thumb like a pick up b/c over the pick ups and the edge of the neck aren't the only 2-3 places.

  • you have girl hands

  • @13thfbass that's a good thing as slender long fingers are perfect for either bass or guitar. short, stubby fat fingers are the worse.

  • hi world

  • from 0:28 to 0:32 he looks lost.

  • thanks im getting a bass for christmas and was looking for different ways to play thank dude :)

  • @boomdadrf me too!!!!!

  • @IzzyCautious what kind did you get i have an ibanez

  • @boomdadrf im not sure! i got it by surprise??? um, it says silvertone on it

  • I put my thumb on the bridge because I get cleaner tone with a significant reduction in buzzing.

  • Thanks i'm learning bass guitar sone and i just wanted to know some stuff

  • Comment removed

  • it's obvious he's into drugs :P

  • sounds Bad guitar ! you can hear buzz fret in the beginning of this video

  • I think this guy should be better for someone whos supposed to be teaching bass

  • Describing sound is funny, "Oh yea? well I like my punch warm bitch!"

  • BASS-ic

oh i get it. elle oh elle

  • When i put my thumb on the pickup and im playing it always tends to slide off and isnt very stable. Does anyone know how i can fix that?

  • @iDaZeGB i cant really say unless i was to see how you play. maybe you could get your teacher or a friend or just some one you know of that has been playing for longer to asses your technique and point out what you could be doing better :) peace josh

  • do you reccomend one of those thumb rests that screw on

  • is he good?

  • i ont put my thumb on the face of the bass but on the side, ive tried other thumb position but im to use to thht way

  • Cool! I was thinking of picking up bass so I just checked out some vids n this one's good! :D

  • whats w the spin's??? =))))

  • great video, but what if i don´t use my thumb? i place my wrist in the top of the body of the bas guitar, and my thumb is in the air all the time... is it ok?

  • 0:30 rapist eyes

  • Dude this guy looks f**king insane.

  • i was gonna buy a bass like that one

  • 3:00 Geddy Lee does that

  • So it's not actual "thumb position" like Steve Bailey?

  • he looks like a squirrel when he spins in the chair! LOL

  • 3:20

Err... Myself, I just ''hold'' my thumb on the pickguard (or body in some cases) and move my thumb to the E string whenever I need to strum the ones below it. You're making it unnessecary hard if you move your thumb to the A or G string =\

  • @GetoutofMyYard1 Not everybody has a pickguard on their bass -.-

  • @ichaichaparadice hence why I said ''and body in some cases'' I do own a Vintage 525b bass without a pickguard and to be honest, I don't even feel a difference between playing with or without a pickguard =\ no need for this face -.-

    ...

  • 0:29 need i say more

  • Nice sweaty back :P

Which fingers do you use 1st, 2nd and 3rd? and do you use your pinky sometimes?

What about when you play 16th notes? do you just go 1,2,1,2,1,2 or 1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3,1................

  • @cedkills

if you mean strumming, I could share how I do it.

    1) if you can use your third finger, going like 1,2,3,1,2,3 is kindof hard with the timing. Going like 1,2,3,2,1,2,3,2 is actually better!

    2) My method is like this. 2,1,1. The second time you use the 1 (index) two times after each other, is because I normal strum, then strum again with my nail (backwards)

Oh, and I don't think a pinky is strong enough for strumming, but in the end strumming with two fingers is the most comfortable

  • @GetoutofMyYard1

    Thanks alot!

  • i like him to be my bass teacher xD, he seems funny person ^_^

  • what about playing with a pick?

  • Anyone know if crecent bass guitars are any good?

  • 553 creappy !

  • the best starters bass. Is A warwick Rockbass Streamer....BUT THE 2010 series.

they don't have this awful logo nowadays! and they changed the bridge i think.

    this is not a advert.

I have tested all the epiphones-ibanezes-squiers(why people still buy these?)-corts

and some others in this price range..

and the Rockbass was perfect. It always ends up in personal taste though.

    hope i helped.

  • nice playing. bad shirt...

  • nasty sweat shirt

  • pause it a 4:22!!!

    creapyyyy...XD

  • You look like your bro alot, both of you guys have big doggy style eyes

  • thanks...it helps alot.

  • what were you playing at the start of this vid?

  • Go to a mom and pop music shop which sells stuff on consignment. Look in the phone book for one. You can often find a good deal.

  • haha this dude is good.

hey anybody who knows about basses very much,

can you please tell me a good prize for a bass that is for begginners? THANKS ALOT MAN

  • I'd spend no more than $300 for a first bass for a non-bass player. I'd recommend an off-brand copy of a Fender Jazz or Precision. This guy's playing a Fender Precision, but most prefer the 2 sets of pickups on the Jazz. I actually play a P-Bass copy in a rock band, I like it but they can be noisy. J-Basses can kill the polarity that causes hum, making you have more power I think.

  • for beginner id say 550euroes, but depends..

i had one for about 450 euroes, but now i got one of 800 euroes.

  • 0:29 haha a nasty sweaty t-shirt :-D

  • Cheers. Watch some videos and they tell you the only place you should rest your thumb is on the strings. Well, dammit, I rest it on the pick-up too and I am proud of it. YEAH! ;o)

  • Actually, I do not rest my thumb normally. That way it's right there to be used when needed. I use a lot of 10ths which require thumb and pinky, but the other three fingers do most of my playing. But from playing piano and other instruments I have unusually strong fingers, so your mileage may vary.

  • A thumb on E string, definitely gives a "feel" good sound! I play that way!

  • god..they're all Caucasians... any Asian teachers?

  • Pretty good video. Although the way I play bass is not mentioned. I rest my hand on the bridge of the bass and use a pick. It's more comfortable for me. I have a Jazz bass (can't stand Precision basses) and resting on the pickup or the neck or the string is just not comfortable and I don't want to drill a hole in it for a thumbrest so I play it like a guitar with my hand on the bridge and use a downward pick to pluck the strings. I find this works the best for me... Good video otherwise!

  • I bought an Ibenez DSR200 several years ago for $200 USD. It is a great beginner bass that has a good sound.

  • ive bought my bass guitar for 50 €

    a very great bass guitar

  • I bet

  • youre talking about bass here, not about a can of coke or something,, youve got cheap basses and youve got expensive ones;)

  • i dont put my thumb anywhere and i play just fine

  • Tina Weymouth from the Talking Heads has an interesting technique. She rests her thumb on the E string and plucks the other strings with her fingers, but when she plays the E she plucks it with her thumb.

  • Lol, I dont actually drill on a wood thingy on my bass, but I too had that problem when I start playing. So, when im plaing the E string fast, I land on the thumb which is anchored on the pickup instead, just like u would when u play on the D or A string

  • IMHO, bass players have a different take on things, and it is not that easy a cross over to bass from the guitar, unless the player has a sense of a "melody" instrument already. For me, the similarity is that both are stringed instruments and happen to have the a similar lay out. Please don't hate, it is just what I know. FYI, if someone wants me to play a guitar part (notes), I need it written in bass clef because if I have a guitar in my hands I learned to read in bass clef. 2 animals-peace

  • Bass is a rhythm instrument...

  • Fender's not supplying the thumb rest on their basses anymore?

  • Not to be a dick, but, Dude : Action adjustment....MAJOR fret noise here!!!

  • I think hes using distortion but If not.... what he said ^

  • "just a little BASSic, no pun intended, lesson"

i don't like the idea of anchoring your thumb to a point, as it makes your hand curve up an unneccessary amount when hitting the highest strings. if u ask me the best bet is resting your thumb on the lower string

  • just kidding

  • lol at david's reactions at the end

  • Need more Bass

  • A cow will probably add a sense of atmosphere to the mood too, you think? Moooooo!

  • The purpose of putting the thumb on the strings above, if i am not wrong, is to remove feedback or string buzz. Don't know why, but I've heard it from somewhere.

  • Yeah, thumb on the lower (in pitch) strings definitely helps with string vibration. The more strings you have on your bass, the more this theory proves itself. The "floating thumb" technique spawned from this theory.

  • lamo on the out takes..

  • he has such pointy ears..., its distracting!

  • "my precious....!" hahahaha

  • To put it out there for other bassists, this is not the deffinitive technique you have to use for thumb placement. There are other techniques (e.g. floating thumb), that you should also give a look :-)

  • I didn't know that the bass was strung similar to the guitar. Name all the strings please. Is it G, D, A, E? Or What? I want to know. Thanks

  • E-A-D-G

5 Strings are usually strung B-E-A-D-G

6 strings are usually strung B-E-A-D-G-C

  • Thanks Theanarchist, this helps me. Now I see why it's easier for guitar players to play the bass. It's similar stringing. Now I'm considering it too. Thanks again.

  • u have an ans in ur question

  • Yeah he does, but he asked for conformation and I conformed and elaborated further. If it was you who dug me down, I have no idea why.

  • well, I just gave him shortest and simplest answer...

such answers way too effective than elaborated answers...

I'm glad u did it though...

  • I'm a guitarist but when I pick up my buddies bass and fiddle around I always rested my thumb on the string but only on the E and A string I'd reach for the G string rather than rest it on the D to get to it, but I'm not a bassist I just think you gotta figure your comfort zone so good lesson I never thought about using the neck or the pick-up as a resting point, I want to see how my friend does it now when he plays... peace

  • more bass

  • hahaha you guys rock

    ROCK ON!!!

ok so i've always wondered. some basses (like mine) have a "thumbrest" to the right of the G string. what does this do? i've had my bass for like, six months now and i still haven't even touched that thing.

  • Is there a lesson on how to play like Steve Harris of Iron maiden? He has his index finger infront of the string he's playing.

  • SWEAT

  • omg, thats what I thought!!!

  • Its cool that just by removing the top half of the pickguard, it makes the bass stand out from every other Black P-bass

  • Nice lesson, you should fill those unused wholes on your bass. wsh i could see you and your brother play!!

  • Ending bloopers were great. So was the lesson. Makes me want a P Bass so bad.

  • Nice relic bass.

  • sweet they look alike

  • 0:29 are u nervous? =(

  • slappin da bass slappin da bass.

  • lol

  • you guys look like each other alot.

  • dude has a brother?.lol

  • good job daves brother

  • why do they always stereotype bass playing with fingers?

alot of us play with a pick...that would be nice too if they made some tips for that aswell

  • well its not a "stereotype" because its not a remark of prejudice or of over-simplified thought. Besides, if you play with a pick what other help do you need? just look up scales and whatever, there's really no difficulty in playing with a pick (being the reason they dont come with instruction manuals) its playing with your fingers thats hard, so thats why they make videos specifically for that.

  • while i am pretty versed on my instruments, i am shure there are some tricks i dont yet know with a pick...

  • well im no expert, so maybe there are weird things (like pinch harmonics, can you do those on basses?) but there's not much more to a pick that strumming with it.

  • u could do pinch harmonics

i might actually be easier on a bass idk ive never tried

  • There are a lot of techniques you can do with a pick.

  • My friend can do pinch harmonics on a bass without a pick

    So yes, you can

  • i can do them without using a pick...

  • did he say his last name is Taub? Is he David's brother?

  • They do look alike...

  • Haha nice intro!

  • im likeing these bass videos cus im gonna play bass for my schools pep band this year!! i play 6 string guitar in our marching band too~

    Paul
