Hey yesterday I was playing alot of bass and I got a huge blister on my
Middle finger and a blood blister on my first finger witch apparently won't ever go is there anyway to play with my fingers and not get blisters after long amounts of playing ??? (btw this is on my right hand that I pluck with)
your actually not supposed to put your thumb down its supposed to float over the strings and sometimes mute the lower strings but thats more of resulting feature. the reason you float your thumb is to 1) keep your wrist straight when playing higher strings 2) it allows you to change strings faster when moving from lower to higher strings and 3) you will actually get more power from your plucking fingers when your thumb not planted.
@bassplayer247 not only that it allows you to have more versatility in tone if you dont have to rely on your bass having the spots to put your thumb like a pick up b/c over the pick ups and the edge of the neck aren't the only 2-3 places.
@iDaZeGB i cant really say unless i was to see how you play. maybe you could get your teacher or a friend or just some one you know of that has been playing for longer to asses your technique and point out what you could be doing better :) peace josh
great video, but what if i don´t use my thumb? i place my wrist in the top of the body of the bas guitar, and my thumb is in the air all the time... is it ok?
Err... Myself, I just ''hold'' my thumb on the pickguard (or body in some cases) and move my thumb to the E string whenever I need to strum the ones below it. You're making it unnessecary hard if you move your thumb to the A or G string =\
@ichaichaparadice hence why I said ''and body in some cases'' I do own a Vintage 525b bass without a pickguard and to be honest, I don't even feel a difference between playing with or without a pickguard =\ no need for this face -.-
1) if you can use your third finger, going like 1,2,3,1,2,3 is kindof hard with the timing. Going like 1,2,3,2,1,2,3,2 is actually better!
2) My method is like this. 2,1,1. The second time you use the 1 (index) two times after each other, is because I normal strum, then strum again with my nail (backwards)
Oh, and I don't think a pinky is strong enough for strumming, but in the end strumming with two fingers is the most comfortable
I'd spend no more than $300 for a first bass for a non-bass player. I'd recommend an off-brand copy of a Fender Jazz or Precision. This guy's playing a Fender Precision, but most prefer the 2 sets of pickups on the Jazz. I actually play a P-Bass copy in a rock band, I like it but they can be noisy. J-Basses can kill the polarity that causes hum, making you have more power I think.
Cheers. Watch some videos and they tell you the only place you should rest your thumb is on the strings. Well, dammit, I rest it on the pick-up too and I am proud of it. YEAH! ;o)
Actually, I do not rest my thumb normally. That way it's right there to be used when needed. I use a lot of 10ths which require thumb and pinky, but the other three fingers do most of my playing. But from playing piano and other instruments I have unusually strong fingers, so your mileage may vary.
Pretty good video. Although the way I play bass is not mentioned. I rest my hand on the bridge of the bass and use a pick. It's more comfortable for me. I have a Jazz bass (can't stand Precision basses) and resting on the pickup or the neck or the string is just not comfortable and I don't want to drill a hole in it for a thumbrest so I play it like a guitar with my hand on the bridge and use a downward pick to pluck the strings. I find this works the best for me... Good video otherwise!
Tina Weymouth from the Talking Heads has an interesting technique. She rests her thumb on the E string and plucks the other strings with her fingers, but when she plays the E she plucks it with her thumb.
Lol, I dont actually drill on a wood thingy on my bass, but I too had that problem when I start playing. So, when im plaing the E string fast, I land on the thumb which is anchored on the pickup instead, just like u would when u play on the D or A string
IMHO, bass players have a different take on things, and it is not that easy a cross over to bass from the guitar, unless the player has a sense of a "melody" instrument already. For me, the similarity is that both are stringed instruments and happen to have the a similar lay out. Please don't hate, it is just what I know. FYI, if someone wants me to play a guitar part (notes), I need it written in bass clef because if I have a guitar in my hands I learned to read in bass clef. 2 animals-peace
i don't like the idea of anchoring your thumb to a point, as it makes your hand curve up an unneccessary amount when hitting the highest strings. if u ask me the best bet is resting your thumb on the lower string
The purpose of putting the thumb on the strings above, if i am not wrong, is to remove feedback or string buzz. Don't know why, but I've heard it from somewhere.
Yeah, thumb on the lower (in pitch) strings definitely helps with string vibration. The more strings you have on your bass, the more this theory proves itself. The "floating thumb" technique spawned from this theory.
To put it out there for other bassists, this is not the deffinitive technique you have to use for thumb placement. There are other techniques (e.g. floating thumb), that you should also give a look :-)
Thanks Theanarchist, this helps me. Now I see why it's easier for guitar players to play the bass. It's similar stringing. Now I'm considering it too. Thanks again.
I'm a guitarist but when I pick up my buddies bass and fiddle around I always rested my thumb on the string but only on the E and A string I'd reach for the G string rather than rest it on the D to get to it, but I'm not a bassist I just think you gotta figure your comfort zone so good lesson I never thought about using the neck or the pick-up as a resting point, I want to see how my friend does it now when he plays... peace

and the Rockbass was perfect. It always ends up in personal taste though.
