I was six years old when I saw this (Incidentally it was also first movie I saw in the cinema), and of course I thought it was great. Watching this today I must say... that its still as great as eighteen years ago... Maybe even better than then, looking on nowadays cartoons. CGI, 3-D, badly drawn manga/anime inspired art, and all that crap, but its lacks something old ones had... Damm, I feel so old, and yet I'm not even thirty...

I think that was meant to complement the mood of the story. As the story took place in the desert, they tried to make everything look a little more like desert sand. Not sure, but it seems fairly likely. I remember they did simliar things in other cartoons (like Sleeping Beauty).
