I'm not from this era and I'm a true die hard mariah fan and I love this version however mariah did do this song justice. We have to pay respect to its original owner but mariah definitly blow this song out the water.
@dec224life This is NOT the original. Great as Nilsson was, he almost ruined this. Mariah just went way over the top. Both great, in their own way. But here the original is simple and strong.
@jacobbruinsma I thought this was the original. who sings the original?btw Mariah's version is near identical to this so if she's way over the top(which she's not) then so is this one. The only "significant" difference is that she sang the last chorus a little longer.
@vidlvr99 The original is a simple song by Badfinger. Much as I like Nilsson, I feel he overdid this. Mariah more or less took his version, but with greater vocal reach, the result to me, was even worse. This was supposed to be a simple song, feeling OK. lyrics important. Badfinger would not agree with me. You don't have to, either. A song from the heart should be straightforward, I think.
@MsFanmail You probably know that Pete Ham remarked that THIS is the version they should have made. He and Evans admitted Nilsson's was superior, quite an admission from 2 great songwriters. Imagine the music that could have been had they both lived.
This guy had the most awesome voice and this song I use to sing when I was little never knew it was a love song as such but loved it ever since and it still makes me sing now with a tear in my eye cuz I know what he was singing about...Thank you for posting this.. :)
When i lived in China my Chinese girlfriend was playing Mariah's version so i suggested to her that she might like to hear older versions, so i got up Badfinger's version and then Harry's. She only played Harry's from then on!

@Grisbi6 Artists are just that way. Their elevator just doesn't go to the top floor. Talent isn't free, you know. It takes away from other areas of one's brain. That's why they usually don't live long, unfortunately. In their cases, the best actually do die young. Although there are a few exceptions...
This song was written by Tom Evans & Pete Ham in 1972. They each committed suicide in the following years, Pete Ham in 1975 & Tom Evans in 1983 after financial difficulties due to business manager Stan Polley who died of natural causes in 2009. Harry Nilsson died in early 1994 after a massive heart attack that he had in 1993.
Harry Nilsson has some stunning sons and daughters left behind. Incedible set of people, Saw it in a documentary last week. The message of understanding for life goes on. The daughters have that magical eyes of her mother....
songwriters from Swansea and Liverpool - Pete Ham and Dave Evans, and got shafted by the record industry then, as Harry later, but yes, Harry got shafted by his financial advisor/warden, but still.
Pete hung himself, than Dave did the same a few years later. Record company faceless bastards!
Agreed, and thank god for the internet. But I think it started to change in the early 1980s when musicians got sassy, and record companies then cleaned their act up. Richard Branson of Virgin Records, and that one that had Island Records sorted the old robbing record companies out when no one wanted to join them and all went to Virgin and Island. U2 is a good example - Bono was well clued up on contracts right from the start with Island, after maybe getting stung.
History is the best lesson. These old yank record companies!?! Robbing fucking bastards! And some brit ones were not that much better. Apple was set up as quite altuistic, bur enter the fucking accountants.... c@nts!
@prober45 Nilsson did not write the song, it was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of the British rockgroup Badfinger, but it was made a superhit by Nilsson as he was able to cover three octaves. Later also Mariah Carey did a good job cobvering the song
