All had to be destroyed so they could not be sold to poor people for $500.

Government insists upon taxing the bank for owning it. The bank, to save itself from financial ruin at the hands of government, demolishes the assets.
It's just another case of Government forcing destruction of value in our society through taxation and regulation.

Furthermore, when the tax rate was very high after WW2, we had a recession, but then we had great job growth. The world was our oyster. When Bush gave employers tax breaks, they hired. Unemployment dropped to 4.6% and Federal tax revenues reached the highest levels ever recorded. It worked.
