  • Is porgy a name or a tearm of endearment?

  • Now this is a true artist

  • simply fabulous

  • 2:51

  • @MysteriousPainter - I thought of you as I watched this most famous of American painters describe his approach to his art and his ups and downs in life -Yes - I thought of you so here for you and even some art in this vid so I liked this one for you - I hope you enjoy and you are not so familiar with this great song from so long ago the great ones hold up. Composed by the Gershwin brothers so long ago and yet so modern to the ear – May kind providence shine on you my friend

  • Soul from the h eart...........my dear Nina thank you for the years of me listening to this and loving it.

  • Great song, so powerful and beautiful that defies comprehension. Then the video is as beautiful and haunting as the music. Love it :)

  • This is DEFINITELY one great song.

  • george and ira Gershwin performed by nina simone

i dont think it gets any better than this guys.

  • I have never heard a song in my life with so much feeling and soul. This woman along with Sarah Vaughn wrote the book on how to sing from deep down within the heart and soul. Everyone else either has either tried hard but they just don't get it.

  • Great song. Weird slide show.

  • I just LUH this joint....

  • Really make me cry!

  • Perfection!!

  • love it

  • PERFECT

  • Enamorada de Nina!

  • this song sends chills down my spine..I love it.. :-)

  • Fantastic!

My dear Mother took me to see this film.

Considered racist when it was first released apparently because it implies that there are poor black people in the southern U.S.

NAACP freaked out and as a result a masterpiece is ostrasized.

Sammy Davis Jr. is fantastic as "Sportin' Life".

    Seek it out.

  • seek it out

  • Well said, parrot!

Where have I heard this comment before?

  • brak, seek it out

  • This is more than a song. I have loved this song for 50 years!!!!

  • Classic

  • NO ONE sings this song as profoundly as Nina. This is her song.

  • "A Woman is a Sometime Thing"... unless you are Nina - and then you are forever!

  • up to 44,063 but i will be back..

  • wow. things like this make me thankful of my life. for 4 minutes and 10 seconds I appreciate all the years I been alive. thankful like everything I've experienced in my short life have somehow led for me to be in this precise moment at this precise place listening to this song. man. I can't even express how this tune moves me I get chills from this song I feel so deprived. I wish I knew more about Jazz but I was only born in 88. if there's any other songs I should know please tell me of them . .

  • slightly different in style, but similar in mood...check out Julie London's "cry me a river"

  • I remember "Cry Me A RIver" by her (Julie London) from The Girl Can't Help It. Quite a favorite of mine as is Porgy by Nina Simone ONLY

  • only 38000 views? sad....

  • Thank God the disc jockeys at the time played this at the full 4 minute plus length. At the time (1959) records over 3 minutes were rarely played on the radio due to time rules. Marty Robbins' "El Paso" also broke through that rule later in the year. But if they had tried to edit THIS great record of Nina's to fit it down for 45 airplay, it should have been a crime.

  • Saw NINA SAMONE in NYC (live) in 1962. Was one (1) table away from her piano..STUNNING VOICE...

  • que voz mas hermosa!!!

  • i love u porgey dont let em take me dont let em handel me

  • This version of the song is what convinced me that Nina Simone was an extraordinary artist. There are passages that are so powerful and beautiful that they defy comprehension.

But then these photographs too! Where did they come from? Some of them are as beautiful and haunting as the music. There is, for example, a photograph at 2:42 - 2:54 of two people kissing in a subway car, seen through a window from the next car... I want to know about these photographs, they are so beautiful!

  • The grestest ever

  • By far the definitive version of I Loves You Porgy by the last of the Jazz Divas, Nina Simone. One of her few billboard hits, its become the version other artists source for inspiration.

The arrangement is sublime, check out the piano solo. Nina lives and breathes this tradegy.

  • please dont compare christina aguilera to nina simone, there is no comparision nina simone is a was and is a legend!!!

  • so beautiful. nina simone is amazing..and christina aguilera for doing the best version anyone can do besides nina. both nina and christina are legends.

  • What or Who is Porgy?

  • Porgy and Bess

  • This video was great! This is my favorite version of this song.

    Peace. Love and (en)Light

    theRaine

  • good song

please watch this video rate it an give a coment(pls nice one)

  • AWSOME!!! Thanks Nina simone and thanks Christina to make us remember or look back!

  • Why is this I "loves" you ? sorry,its such a silly question,but i'm hungarian,so ...

  • It's a black dialect from a certain place and time in American culture--adding an s to the end of some verbs.

  • The best version no doubt. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

  • This is Gershwin at his best. The songs he wrote for this "opera" are still played today. They made a movie version with Sidney Poitier as Porgy and DorothyDandridge as Bess. Anyhow...Ninas rendering, tho not in the movie is the best I've ever heard !

  • One of my favorites divas.

  • Nina.. Without a doubt the best version.. Even her live version is haunting...

  • whats a porgy? ...

  • It's a name!

  • beautiful...

  • Nina Simone*

  • christina aguilera's tribute was amazing. Nina Simon is great

  • absolutely !

  • Christina tribute was awesome :)

  • yes i agree, when those new young divas make tributes to old artists they kind of resurect them again cos we always go back to their great musical achievement, like beyonce with etta and christina......

  • christina sang a great tribute to nina at grammy nominations concert ;)

  • What album is this version from?? if you know, please reply to me.

  • little girl blue

  • It was her first album (label Bethleem) and her first success.

  • it took forever for me to find this for my grandmother man i burned it and all i could hear is this lol thanks for the post

  • SUM VOICE

  • 1957 Good Grief! I was only 9 years old and was just getting my interest in music going.

  • The only singer that gives me the chills whenever I hear her voice. I am glad that I got to see her in person once, at Carnegie Hall.

  • I completely agree with you!!

    Battar

  • Does anyone know the year that this version was recorded??? I think it is my favorite.

    Chris

  • her timing is incredible, the words expand in every direction, I have heard few words so simple sung with so much meaning

  • stay with you forever.

  • This is by far Nina's best definitive version of Porgy & Bess.

  • I love you, Nina. Rest in peace.

  • This famous Jazz ballad is given its most moving interpretation by Dr Nina Simone in 1957.

As Lauryn Hill said: "Nina Simone is the Truth!"

  • Une de ses plus belles chansons...que dire, merci beaucoup, ça fait longtemps que je cherchais cette version...un pur bonheur!!!

  • Maravillosa voz!!!!!

    Precioso video!

    Felicidades!

  • Beautiful!

  • i totally adore this version

  • This song touches my soul.... It is both heart warming and saddening for me.... but none the less something beautiful that I feel all should listen to... 5/5

  • The best version that I have ever heard. Brava! TY.

  • I couldn't have been more than four or five the first time i ever heard this song. My mother was playing it over and over again - probably exorcising some man out of her head or heart. It found its way into my consciousness and has dwelled there ever since. Words cannot adequately describe what the tone and notes and phrasing...the plaintive quality of Nina's voice...what they do to me. Stunning...transcendent.

  • wow deep!!!

  • it's "I 'loves' you Porgy" not 'love'.

    never-the-less, beautiful.

  • To the person that put this video together... it's beautiful... Job Well Done! It made me cry...The pics in it are gorgeous... almost as gorgeous as Ms. Nina herself.... love you always Nina... RIP....

  • this recording is haunting

  • I truly love this song. I can listen to it all day. Brilliant.

  • hope she can say this lyric to me and i will take care of her wit all my heart..promise....

  • good man

  • luv u always my sweet ann sorry for my stupid things.. this song is our memory song

  • wondefull as always the great nina simone
