@MysteriousPainter - I thought of you as I watched this most famous of American painters describe his approach to his art and his ups and downs in life -Yes - I thought of you so here for you and even some art in this vid so I liked this one for you - I hope you enjoy and you are not so familiar with this great song from so long ago the great ones hold up. Composed by the Gershwin brothers so long ago and yet so modern to the ear – May kind providence shine on you my friend
I have never heard a song in my life with so much feeling and soul. This woman along with Sarah Vaughn wrote the book on how to sing from deep down within the heart and soul. Everyone else either has either tried hard but they just don't get it.
wow. things like this make me thankful of my life. for 4 minutes and 10 seconds I appreciate all the years I been alive. thankful like everything I've experienced in my short life have somehow led for me to be in this precise moment at this precise place listening to this song. man. I can't even express how this tune moves me I get chills from this song I feel so deprived. I wish I knew more about Jazz but I was only born in 88. if there's any other songs I should know please tell me of them . .
Thank God the disc jockeys at the time played this at the full 4 minute plus length. At the time (1959) records over 3 minutes were rarely played on the radio due to time rules. Marty Robbins' "El Paso" also broke through that rule later in the year. But if they had tried to edit THIS great record of Nina's to fit it down for 45 airplay, it should have been a crime.
This version of the song is what convinced me that Nina Simone was an extraordinary artist. There are passages that are so powerful and beautiful that they defy comprehension.
But then these photographs too! Where did they come from? Some of them are as beautiful and haunting as the music. There is, for example, a photograph at 2:42 - 2:54 of two people kissing in a subway car, seen through a window from the next car... I want to know about these photographs, they are so beautiful!
By far the definitive version of I Loves You Porgy by the last of the Jazz Divas, Nina Simone. One of her few billboard hits, its become the version other artists source for inspiration.
The arrangement is sublime, check out the piano solo. Nina lives and breathes this tradegy.
so beautiful. nina simone is amazing..and christina aguilera for doing the best version anyone can do besides nina. both nina and christina are legends.
This is Gershwin at his best. The songs he wrote for this "opera" are still played today. They made a movie version with Sidney Poitier as Porgy and DorothyDandridge as Bess. Anyhow...Ninas rendering, tho not in the movie is the best I've ever heard !
yes i agree, when those new young divas make tributes to old artists they kind of resurect them again cos we always go back to their great musical achievement, like beyonce with etta and christina......
This song touches my soul.... It is both heart warming and saddening for me.... but none the less something beautiful that I feel all should listen to... 5/5
I couldn't have been more than four or five the first time i ever heard this song. My mother was playing it over and over again - probably exorcising some man out of her head or heart. It found its way into my consciousness and has dwelled there ever since. Words cannot adequately describe what the tone and notes and phrasing...the plaintive quality of Nina's voice...what they do to me. Stunning...transcendent.
To the person that put this video together... it's beautiful... Job Well Done! It made me cry...The pics in it are gorgeous... almost as gorgeous as Ms. Nina herself.... love you always Nina... RIP....
Is porgy a name or a tearm of endearment?

Fantastic!
My dear Mother took me to see this film.
Considered racist when it was first released apparently because it implies that there are poor black people in the southern U.S.
NAACP freaked out and as a result a masterpiece is ostrasized.
Sammy Davis Jr. is fantastic as "Sportin' Life".
Seek it out.
