Nuclear is very powerful as we have seen: A Nimitz Class Carrier support 5000 people along with repair and resupply bases for aircraft hospitals and desalination while traveling at 30 knots for 13 years with a lump of uranium the size of a fist. And it's not about the volume of reserves, it is about the rate of production. In the US, the rate of production peaked in 1970 and has trended downwards since. Think of all the technological advances since 1970 (directional drilling, SAGD, etc.). They haven't been able to raise production.
We should have started to use green energy a long time ago, but there is still time to reduce the risk of a complete energy crises. Even if peak oil is about now we still have some time before the descent.

Alternate sources for transportation fuels may be battery based (electric)? Huge solar panel and wind turbine fields are not impossible. Plenty of room in the sea... I'm a optimist!

Hubberts peak was indeed likely hit in 2005, meaning world production will only reduce from here. Maybe if people buy USO or DBO ETFs and cash out in a few years time with healthy profits they can donate to research into the alternatives.

Although you make a very good point about oil you are wrong about some alternatives. Nuclear is very powerful as we have seen: A Nimitz Class Carrier support 5000 people along with repair and resupply bases for aircraft hospitals and desalination while traveling at 30 knots for 13 years with a lump of uranium the size of a fist. Fission along with other sources will be the future.

Decentralization works. Food shouldn't come from 1500 miles, it should come from 1500 feet. The same goes for energy, we need to look at proven methods of site-generated power; using bio-mass to treat wastewater, then converting that to fuel... just one simple answer to a complex issue, there are so many more if we are willing to open our eyes.

Oil is back down to $34 a barell, and falling fast. Anyone that buys the peak oil myth needs to go back to econ 101, or didn't live through the 1970's. Facts are, oil is abundent and the supplies are growing, that is why oil prices are falling like a rock. When we run out of oil, we then have almost unlimited supplies of coal and other carbon based supplies of energy. Don't buy the hype, oil is going down in price and will stay there. The bank lend it and another person buys things or makes business from that money...
In that way it even makes things worse.

let us assume that is correct. even if there is some massive reserve of oil. 0.039% is the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. we can only survive less than 1% CO2 concentration in the air we breath. burning that much oil would bump the average CO2 concentration of our atmosphere to 5%. so lets put it this way: you burn the oil and everyone dies.

US oil and natural gas reserves protected from development are minimal. Drill them or not, it just doesn't matter.
And it's not about the volume of reserves, it is about the rate of production. In the US, the rate of production peaked in 1970 and has trended downwards since. Think of all the technological advances since 1970 (directional drilling, SAGD, etc.). They haven't been able to raise production.

Check out Lindsey Williams... Peak Oil is a Lie to control the masses and depopulate the planet. The creation of oil is a natural geologic process, and deep oil wells are being pulled beyond 18000'. Water is the ultimate fuel, as will be the extraction from zero-point, but this is not common knowledge yet.

Unless ignorance is an energy source, we're going to go through a long tough time finding a cheap, renewable and clean energy source that takes far less energy to produce than the the final product can contribute. It has been clear for some time. The first decade of the 21st century would mark the end of the oil era.
We are at, or have just passed, peak.
All some of us can do at this point is form self-protective networks and work to create refugia that _may_ persist past the crisis and breakdown.
The main problem is this: The people who are paying attention _and_ doing something about it now are scattered widely (i.e. NOT JHK). Thinly scattered. Dilution in this instance is not a solution.
