@trigsim There are a few videos on Youtube about how to make your own for cheap, or visit the website in the description to get one just like mine. Steve can supply chaga for you as well
I left my fire piston in the yard and a damn squirrel grabbed it with its mouth and ran up a tree. Now, I am afraid this squirrel will light my house on fire for hunting most of its family.
Ok, seriously, not trying to be a smart ass, but if you are going to carry this thing in yor pocket why not just bring a lighter? I don't get the logic.
@morgan1492 It's good to have multiple ways to make fire. Lighters run out of fuel. The flint wears down. They aren't wind/rain proof. In my fire kit I have: 2 bic lighters, a torch lighter, storm matches, a fire steel, a Fresnel lens, and some tinder. I may have to look into a fire piston.
If I could only have one way to make fire, a lighter wouldn't be it. I would probably go for a fire steel.
@tekknorat Theres a 2 parter video on youtube done by this dude with a southern accent showing you how to make a homemade one with materials you can buy at Lowes/home depot for under 13 bucks
You know nothing about fire if you were going to do anything with that and make it big everything would of set on fire, you really need to sort out the place for the fire and then you wood in order of size to feed it with.
Deputy Bob replies "Fire Piston?! Looks like we just caught up with the lingo boys, put out the bulletin, Fire piston is a hot word" .
Five weeks later - News Headline - FBI busts ring of survivalist gun owners in operation to build more "Fire Piston" Paraphernalia. FBI spokesperson says that these devices pose a threat to national security.
Thanks for the reply back about the red light I actualy looked to see if your shirt was red or something around so your clarifcation is appreciated , I officialy stand corrected , it really is a cool device .
looks like you cheated a bit , at minute 1:21 you can see an ember before you do your compression cycle looks like you might have done a couple of compressions before the actaul demo and had an ember before you thouhg you did , I do think it is very cool and have seen other vids like yours and it is really cool seeing the action thru the plexi .
Nice Eye! Unfortunately for you, what you're seeing is actually the reflection from the red record light from the camera. It is visible again at the very end of the video. Sorry no tricks here.
@Hardtailxxx an interesting thing , The story I read was that a USMC serving in the philipines came across a native who lit a smoke with it (not sure what he was smoking or what it was wraped with) but it was supposed to be like a cigerette the Marine traded a Zippo for it and the fire piston still works , I bet the native was a bit disappointed when his lighter fluid ran out .
No, the Plexiglas would not melt, as it is only in contact with the fuel for a split second. But the plastic plunger will char a bit, but never melt under normal use.
Cool video, the fire piston works awesome. I am a owner of one as well as my friend CrazyTailez (look him up on youtube for more fire piston videos) and we use the fire piston to light fires on camping or back packing trips.
I never take a lighter nor matches with him to the wilderness. I use a fire steel or a fire piston. These tools are more reliable than a Bic lighter and when your life is dependent upon your gear you take what you can rely and trust upon.
I have done the Bow drill, many times. In Fact it's why I wear shin high boot's whenever I go camping. Talking from experience, it may be easier than rubbing sticks together but it's still a major pain in the ass.
The gas in a Bic will actually freeze if it is cold enough, and not be useful, except as a fire-steel (flint), which you could have taken in the first place.
And at 11pm when you're freezing your ass off and its a long time till the sun comes up, you can at least use your magnifying lens to get a closeup as the frostbite begins.
Honestly, I haven't made fire successfully any other way than with a lighter. Bowdrills, and rubbing two sticks together take a very long time and are labor intensive. Not good for survival situation where energy must be conserved. Lighters are not crush proof, and matches can get wet. This piston is crushproof, and waterproof, so I can store fuel in the chamber. I saw Les Stroud us it on Survivorman. Although A 9-volt battery and steel wool work even faster.
les stroud uses the bow drill more than eny other method! ya it is labor intensive but you need a fire to survive! you need several ways of making fires to survive!
Any material that will ignite (and stay lit) from a brief moment of 500 degrees will work. Chaga fungus works, char cloth, cattail fluf are among things I have used and that work. Just experiment
My comment was a response to someone saying he should just use a lighter(not his fire piston), and I was trying to tell him why lighters shouldn't be relied on.
Good job! Thanks for the demonstration. I really might get one of those. I have some skill with iron and flint, but it takes me a lot longer to get a fire going with that (mostly because I have to rely on some luck to get a spark onto my fungus or charcloth). The piston looks easier to handle and more reliable.
It works because of the chemical equation (P1V1)/T1=(P2V2)/T2. where P is pressure, V is volume and T is temperature, 1 means the variable before you you push the tube in and 2 is after. When you decrease the volume of the tube very quickly, the pressure cannot go up fast enough to compensate. Therefore temperature also goes up very quickly to make up for this. I'm sorry if this is unclear, but I don't have much space to work with.
thanks brother..ive yet to try fire pistons but yer video, along with others has pretty much convinced me to give it a whirl..thanks for the circulation of knowledge!!

cop: What do you have here a crack pipe some black sheet of paper and a plunger.
dude: I can explain. It's a fire piston I use it to light ciggarettes.
cop: What the hell happend to your lighter?
dude: It ran out of lighter fluid.
cop: Can I get one of those?
Ensensu2 1 year ago
Nice video, You just got smoke in Your face cause You should hold the tinder bundle up, so the smoke goes up and not in Your face.
Is there some magic manufacturing tricks or can the fire piston be made at home?
Do you have to use specific tinder in the piston like tinder fungus, or any dry material will work?
Thank You.
