Tom Chambers shouldv'e retired a Sun. They shouldn't have traded for Barkley. Because the pre-Barkley Suns team only needed a defensive center and a few more defensive stoppers off the bench. To become a championship team. Had they never traded for Barkley, I think Phoenix would've won a championship!!!
You think McHale would? It'd depend on his coach and teammates. McHale reminds me of a tougher, less skilled Pau Gasol. I don't think most of the all-time great players would struggle unless maybe Mark Jackson. He relied on the handcheck to add many years to his career(he couldn't have guarded anyone playing these days.)
All I'm sayin is Dwight Howard is 6'11'' just like chambers, and they're almost the same weight and I've never seen Howard take baseline from that far out and do a reverse slam....still take Dwight slightly overall, BUT chambers is one of the most underrated players ever.
nice. in todays nba he would have taunted the competition for like a full 10 seconds after the dunk. todays nba has been taken over by gangsters and fools. back then the focus was winning.
Isn't it funny listening to these stupid YouTube kids talkin' about there existed no big, strong & athletic big men that could do things like this, B4 the year 2000? LOL!!
They're actually STUPID enough to say shit like that, while TOTALLY ignoring the highlight footage that's READILY available to them on this site..
@blackadam06 well said. Who stops Jordan if he played with today's contact rules? Who could stop Kevin McHale without getting fouled out with today's rules?
Cubfan in my opinion Tom Chambers at 6-11 235 was a athletic version of Larry Bird and you just saw it for yourself and both played the same position.
I'll never understand why a fucking stupid movie like "White Men Can't Jump" was made. When Tom Chambers was IN-YO FACING many of the brothers back then. Fuck You, Hollywood!!!!
It was a privledge watching this guy play in real life. Not many guys his side could do what he did. Yeah Tom never got a ring, but he deserves to be in the hall.
I always love listening to Hubie Brown describe dunks: "a two-handed back dunk in which he downwardly propelled the leather orb into the cylinder with great thrust."
This has to be one of the most slept-on dunks of all time. I hate to say, I think his whiteness has something to do with it. How often do you see a simultaneous facial on four guys, three of them greats?
Perhaps the best measure: even the home crowd knows they just saw something utterly sick
If you were a white boy in the 80's and early 90's you were a Tom Chambers fan even if you didnt like Seattle or Pheonix. Not that you were racist, but white boys didnt throw down like this in the NBA (No Bitches Allowed), and most still dont. He sooo fun to watch because you knew he was good for one of these on a regular basis.
Chambers has Howard's height and explosiveness, maybe even more lift. He obviously had less raw muscle but hadmuch more mobility & of course could damage the other teams with his long range shot. TC was A really deadly player against a shifting defense & murderous when he sensed a mismatch.
angleddcup: Bird is scrawny? Not muscular looking maybe, but certainly not scrawny. And Tom beat 4 Celtics on that play, including (the large) Kevin McHale, and the giant Robert Parish. But did you happen to see the scoreboard? Don't get me wrong, I dig Chambers' game, but the Celtics were still up by 8 in the fourth, and playing at home. They most likely got the last laugh and won this game!
Check out my new video clip of Chambers' monster facial on the Houston Rockets in Gm.6of the 1987 playoffs. Another new clip highlights Chambers' 60-point game in 1990.
Crimmyboy: I'm confused! If you follow basketball and you've never heard of Tom Chambers you must be young, yet you referred to him as a kid. Just kidding man (no pun intended)! But seriously, if haven't watched anymore (youtube) vids on Tom yet, at least watch Loaded Chambers.
A fascinating play. Chambers (TC) had an outside-in game ie. his outside shot, sets up his drive. TC was right handed without a pull up shot.
Boston know this. Bird chases him off shot and then backs off two steps. Bird has help in McHale to stop TC's baseline drive.
TC's options, give ball up, turn the corner against Bird and beat Mchale, or gamble he can get to a spot on opposite side of rim. TC gambles! Bird turns TC over to McHale but Parrish and lewis do not wall off baseline.
Tom Chambers as well as so many underrated players of the 80s should make Hall of Fame. Some examples: Rolando Blackman, Alex English, Adrian Dantley, Chris Mullin
detlef hitler shrempf, price, moncrief..hell oh pete. they all sucked...none ever even made it to the finals..gee whiz, are you drunk or is it dope???
All those players would KICK ASS in today's NBA of soft defense, and they weren't even considered "superstars" back in their own era, so strong was the NBA back then.
Fun Fact: Alex English scored more points than ANY OTHER PLAYER during the entire '80's decade, even MORE than Michael Jordan in fact!
So please, take your ignorant typing fingers and shove them up your well lubed butthole 1kyredneck!
This video illustrates the Celtics of the 80's. Great dunk from the opposing team and then they flash the score. Beantown was never about looking good, just being good.
Chambers was one of the most mobile (big) white men I have ever seen, but he was either hot or cold. When he was hot he was very good; when he was cold he was terrible.
He didn't mind touting himself either. He won the MVP of an All-Star game and in his TV interview pronounced himself the best player in the world that day. I watched the game - he just happened to touch the ball the most, and shot it if he was less than half the court away from the bucket.
agreed. chambers was perhaps the most athletic 6'10" forward of his era. chambers was a scorer - that was his role on the team. he got a bum rap for that. everyone wanted him to be more like bird with hops. compare chambers' point/assist ratio to dominique wilkins and wilkins will by all accounts is more "selfish". his comment at the post-game MVP interview in '87 was simply repeating what Pat O'Brien of CBS announced as he presented chambers with the MVP trophy, but that got spun in the press.
It is possible that I missed O'Brien's comment, but I did watch the game and the MVP interview and I don't remember that part.
Even so, there is no doubt that he was very athletic and outside of The Dr. I can't recall many players that ran the court as well as he did for his size.
My uncle said he would make impossible plays at the rim look easy, but could make an easy layup or post up move look awkward as hell. He said he had to be the first option and he'd get 35 to 50 with ease... but the only point guard that killed himself to make him the superstar was KJ. He also called him soft unless attacking the rim, and said he'd get less rebounds than Nate McMillan and KJ at times.
That's ridiculous. The support was just begging to be dragged behind Chambers. That dunk was self-defense; he was still rising as he was moving away from the basket.
That was a great dunk. I am a Celtics fan and hate to admit that WAS awesome. HE had 3-4 Celtics on him at one point and still gets the dunk! Kudo's to Chambers...
hahaha....Bird is my fav,but that was nice.Bird used to do that dunk once in awhile,too,though...the reverse.Kobe likes that one nowadays...keeps you from getting blocked.
This Chambers dunk is so crazy, after seeing this, I accidentally pressed the PAUSE button instead of the LIKE button.
