Get some 18oz sparring gloves(kind of expensive) and backyard boxing becomes a lot more fun because the proper gloves widen the impact and it won't feel so damaging. a well thrown straight jab can be a very powerful hit, easily enough to knock someone out. Boxing is not all about haymakers and big punches, sometimes a straight shot in an opening does the trick.

But what you do see often is a jab to the temple causing a knockout, or the punch is thrown at a perfect time where the jaw is angled towards the punch causing the trauma of the hit to be dramatically increased. Pro boxers are all punching hard enough to knock anyone out, it's just a matter of timing.
