its not a race thing...educate yourself on the sociopolitical atmosphere...immigrants set up a life in south florida, the closest place to live but it happens to be developed by rich, expensive developers...see, a mexican can cross the border into texas of california or wherever, but the geographical position of florida makes it a freaking journey to get out of south florida for better living...south florida, miami, its expensive and corrupt.
I live in Colorado and during the 90's and early 00's people were displaced in large numbers when the affordable housing was bought out and turned into condos, lofts and townhomes for the upwardly mobile, only to have the places sitting vacant less than 10 years later due to the failing economy.
Many of the people who lost their homes where white and had to try to find new apts in a place where rents and deposits had gone up 100 - 200%. It's not about race, it's poor people who suffer.
I suppose evolution had nothing to do with ignorance...had it been such, you wouldn't exist to speak with so much hatred. Continue to seek comfort in the internet! I can't feel a tremendous amount of sympathy for these people because they live in a country where they can both go to school as well as borrow books at a library to educate themselves, for free, which will give them a better life than living in plywood shacks, speaking Ebonics and waiting for the government to give you hands out. Broken system? Have you seen how the rest of the world lives? Almost half the worlds population lives off less than 2 American dollars a day. We're so spoiled here that we think the government has to give us a life: they don't. Louisiana lost most of their jobs in the mid 1980 that is when I graduated from high school. Moved to Houston TX with a friend that claimed I was welcome to stay with them,get to Houston and He was found to be a liar his Dad said no way. I had a job but no place to live. Slept under a phone booth until I found a place indoors. Had to live with coke dealers and drunks until I lived in TX 6 months the time someone allotted suitable for one to be able to rent a place. Had job&$ was out doors.

i really respect what you guys are doing. the minimum wage is way below the living wage, and i know that housing prices have skyrocketed all across the country even within the past two or three years.
If a person winds up sleeping in a box today there is something really wrong with them. Such as drug addiction, mental Illness or both. Most won't go into a shelter because they can't/won't follow rules. If you can't follow the rules of society this is where and most likely how you will always live. There are plenty of government programs to help with housing, education, food, and job placement already established. Use them!

The point is that there are no "cheap" apartments, bozo! I live in Miami and a 1/1 will not rent for less than $900 a month. To put this into context, over half of the labor force in Miami earns less than $8 dollars an hour. This is not about a lack of will to work, the issue is a little more complex than that.
The only post in here that makes sense. housing costs in Miami are overpriced for even some middle income families let alone lower income. jobs are also very hard to find in dade county so residents usu. go to broward to work. not all, but a considerable amount do.

Great intentions, but this doesn't solve the problem in the long run. When the land is sold it is going to create a very unstable situation for the county and the squatters. People don't get out of poverty with freebe handouts, in the long run that only creates more poverty. However, I do find it positive that they are attempting to improve their situation without government intervention.
The people in Umoja village aren't asking for free housing. They're asking their government to do the kinds of things governments are supposed to do: put together the kinds of incentives that encourage, for example, companies to come in and provide jobs, or developers to build affordable housing. And their government, probably full of politicians elected with the help of developers' money, has been refusing to do so for years.
Why didn't "we" finish school and get the low paying job, pay "our" dues, like everyone else, and then rent the cheap apartment until we had enough money, and a better job to afford better housing? That takes too long and it is a drag.

I agree that it is not ALWAYS their fault, but majority of the time it is. I had a friend, who had 2 kids with major medical issues, no insurance, went bankrupt, lost everything he had, lived out of his van w/ his kids and wife, with no support from his family (they didn't care). But he never blamed it on anybody. He worked his butt off, did any job he had to, now 5 years later, he was able to buy his first house and his wife is in nursing school, about to graduate next year.
I think its great that these people came together to make a community supporting eachother. I don't think they should blame the gov't. It isn't the gov't job to make affordable housing for people.

I can't feel a tremendous amount of sympathy for these people because they live in a country where they can both go to school as well as borrow books at a library to educate themselves, for free, which will give them a better life than living in plywood shacks, speaking Ebonics and waiting for the government to give you hands out. We're so spoiled here that we think the government has to give us a life: they don't. We have so many opportunities but we have to make an effort to achieve them, and I just don't see it in these people who refuse to pick-up a book or go back to school to better themselves.

Louisiana lost most of their jobs in the mid 1980 that is when I graduated from high school. Moved to Houston TX with a friend that claimed I was welcome to stay with them,get to Houston and He was found to be a liar his Dad said no way. I had a job but no place to live. Slept under a phone booth until I found a place indoors. Had to live with coke dealers and drunks until I lived in TX 6 months the time someone allotted suitable for one to be able to rent a place. Had job&$ was out doors.

If a person winds up sleeping in a box today there is something really wrong with them. Such as drug addiction, mental Illness or both. Most won't go into a shelter because they can't/won't follow rules. If you can't follow the rules of society this is where and most likely how you will always live. There are plenty of government programs to help with housing, education, food, and job placement already established. Use them!

I believe in charity but I also believe that it's not a one-way system, with the exception of the disabled. Charity is to help people get off their feet when they have no other options, but these people do have options. They can give-up their hip-hop culture and go back to school instead of leeching off the system. You want a house? Work for it like everyone else does. Even Habitat for Humanity makes sure you're not a lazy leech before building you a home.

Great intentions, but this doesn't solve the problem in the long run. When the land is sold it is going to create a very unstable situation for the county and the squatters. People don't get out of poverty with freebe handouts, in the long run that only creates more poverty. However, I do find it positive that they are attempting to improve their situation without government intervention.

The people in Umoja village aren't asking for free housing. They're asking their government to do the kinds of things governments are supposed to do: put together the kinds of incentives that encourage, for example, companies to come in and provide jobs, or developers to build affordable housing. And their government, probably full of politicians elected with the help of developers' money, has been refusing to do so for years.

Ask yourself a question: Would you go to work everyday if you NEVER got paid for it? NO!!! We our ancestors did for years and if they were paid maybe they could have passed down some of that money as their legacy...like the white man did. You can't relate when your mama and daddy has it all to all of you people who says it's their fault. There are a lot more benefits for the Mexican than it is for the black man who's been here for over 400 years.

oh that is b.s. My parents came to this country with $300 dollars in their pockets. We have been here for 18 years, my parents worked their butts of, working 2 jobs if they had to. They made sure that we had education, and taught us that you and only you decide what happens in your life. Now they are successful and probably above the middle class. The only thing excuses give you is a reason to fail.

I agree that it is not ALWAYS their fault, but majority of the time it is. I had a friend, who had 2 kids with major medical issues, no insurance, went bankrupt, lost everything he had, lived out of his van w/ his kids and wife, with no support from his family (they didn't care). But he never blamed it on anybody. He worked his butt off, did any job he had to, now 5 years later, he was able to buy his first house and his wife is in nursing school, about to graduate next year.

Guess why suburbs exist: to take water and energy to very distant places no one would dream of live in if you would not justify this (get away from violence is a good excuse...). But then you can sell the LAND which is in the middle, between the actual cities AND the suburbs. And one day the city reaches the suburbs and your beautiful house in what was once a far away suburb goes undervalued.
