I'm not sure if that's saying that property is paramount to democracy, but I'd have to disagree if that was the case. Cheers for that, a pint sounds goood. I'm academically inclined in that I look into politics, but I'd rather be seen as a realist, as I'm more for going to parliament to pass laws to make working class people's lives easier rather than debate philosophically about the pros and cons of monarchy etc
Of coure, but within government this is either conflict of interests or outright corruption, both punishable. Outside government its perfectly legal and legitimate. And prices can be hiked of course, but would make the government that did it alot less electable (ergo a more democratic system than a private company running it as only their shareholders have a say, and they always vote for more personal profit).
well when it comes to road taxes i understand it'd be much fairer if funds went back into infrastructure, but there are more vital areas (healthcare) where i wouldnt mind a bit of road revenue going. thing is we can't really see the govt's books for this...
"It is only the state that can secure a monopoly"...not intending to start a huge discussion, but bluntly put, no. Either through aggresive market policy or simply through the idea that size counts (larger companies can buy in bulk or whatever to provide cheaper services/goods), monoploies can easily form within the "free" market. Government can prevent this with equality measures in effect making the "free" market less free in the eyes of some and more free in the eyes of others
To be honest the best way to keep fares low is to nationalise public transport, removing the greed factor (no massive inefficiency with CEOs creaming off profits into their pay packages, all profit is reinvested) and increasing efficiency due to having one big system rather than lots of little independent ones.
Cheap populism is unsustainable tax cuts for the wealthy, ethical populism is giving the people what they need (cheap reliable basic transport)
They can raise prices if they already have a monopoly (not exactly a local alternative to buses, unless rickshaws count). I implied that "market forces" are an excuse for abuses of th system, which they frequently are.
I'd rather focus on public transport before city centre cars...not got oodles of sympathy for people driving bmws to the front door of work. But yes to income, high VAT is nooot good.
Or you're suggesting we should have a socialist national government instead as they'd have more power to change the price of fares than the Mayor? To be honest if the Mayor can introduce a new cycle system, then he can subsidise fares and expand infrastructure too...
You do overlook the fact that companies can easily raise prices purely for profit, yet claim its due to "market forces", or that subsidising public transport to help poorer people move about more easily isn't beneficial to the economy.
There is too much of a social divide imposed by the school and the rest of Britain; of course I'd love to have mad cocaine-fuelled parties and study in a rich atmosphere, but I would lose all appreciation of how the working class live, and therefore be crap at representing them. Bo is exactly that, despite his weird outbursts at least ken focuses on real issues like bus fares and low income families, not ping pong and the empire...
He's from Eton, like the traditional tory "cream", who spend their early days on cocaine and god knows what smashing up the country and getting away with it because of their parents. Not that I don't see it as a good life choice (wink) but its definately a PR politician breeding ground...its just the Boris is stark raving mad and his hurble burble doesn't sound very slick haha
Its true that in the end Boris gets the last laugh. Purely because he wins the prize coveted by all politicians in interview. The uninterrupted monologue shot at the end. Bravo. I have never believed he is stupid but I do believe Boris to be ineffectual, and thats not the sort of thing London needs. He knows the value of stunts, but then I suppose that is about 60% of the workload of a mayor so fair enough. He is good in argument though, really took it home to Paxman.
@HigherPoker That's where you're wrong. He is actually more smart than people give him credit for (as you can see here where he literally makes Paxman speechless). Do not confuse eccentricity for stupidity.
Try as I might, I can't help but love Boris. I'm a lifelong liberal and strong opponent of his politics. Something about him I just can't help but adore.
@2edsajdmsa I don't want to like him because he stands for so many things I can't stand, but he's so funny I can't help but smile whenever I see him (which I guess is dangerous because he can probably get away with more, hiding behind this comical facade)
Paxman is a hypocrite of the highest order. Boris shows himself to be himself, he is true with all his faults. Who would you prefer? A prick or a man true to himself?
@LoneDerangerer Good point...but when a man who is being true to himself shows himself to be someone who borders on incompetency, do you want him running your capital city? Boris Johnson is a bit of an embarrassment in my opinion.
Maybe the reason why other politicians bring no life into politics because maybe politics is not meant to be fun like doing your taxes and performing open heart surgery isn't. 'cause no matter how fun he is to others he's doing quite a serious job which affects many and I can't understand a effing word he's saying. Make him a pub landlord and all those that luv him can flock to it and drink booze together but don't put him in the hotseat to answer questions on serious matters please!!!!!! ;-(
Living in Spain as I do, I have to say it is a blessed relief to see a politician who talks like a human being, not some robopol programmed with fragments of manifesto. Love Boris or loathe him, what you see is what you get, he's a genuine article.
Just for that reason alone I'm inclined to like him.
What an absolute buffoon Johnson is, London is welcome to him. What other countries must think of London is anybody's guess. A cartoon character brought to life is my guess.
@zerker12568901 Erm, he's useless. A fucking redneck twat - I couldn't care less whether or not he's famous, and he certainly isn't 'cool' in any paradigm I've ever understood to exist. Try again.
@xXeternity2008xX Chuck Norris only wins when Bruce Lee is told to lose, and that has nothing to do with the power of Boris Johnson and his power hair cut
Does paxman pretend to be stupid, or is he is just naturally at the lowest level of questioning? ... I know he is entertaining, but he style is actually very basic and so often his interviewees are surprised by his lame questioning.
Pax is always like this. He's a bully of an interviewer and he gets away with it alot of the time. But lmao Borris is just immune (simple?) to his tactics and even reversed them on him XD
Paxman is being a wanker because it's his job. I seriously cannot agree with the comment that BBC political shows are terrible. This is not T4 where the people being interviewed can get away with fluffy answers. Politicians need to be held accountable and need to be interviewed in the style of Paxman to get to the bottom of what they really believe. After all, that's what matters in politics, what they believe in, not what they look like or act like.
@matchbox555 You cannot deny that Labour have practically destroyed this country. By voting Labour, you are pretty much admitting you know nothing about politics.
I concur with PNETriffid. Also for the point that Paxman didn't really get "owned". I think he realises that Johnson is simply too gregarious and disarming to really pin down like your average stuffy politician, so he actually (very unlike Paxo) levels with him. A very interesting interview with two shrewd operators.
Jesus Christ, if any of you lot actually did any DETAILED reading-up on Boris Johnson, you would quickly realise that he is a total arse of a politician.
But this is what you get when most people admit they know very little about politics, but still feel they should give their hastily-formed opinion. That's the only way a tosser like this can become a people's politician: by playing the bumbling fool to cover up glaring holes in his knowledge and suitability for the job.
This has to go down as one of the best Newsnight interviews of all time ...Could Boris seriously ever become PM? Of course the very idea has always been bounded about tongues-firmly-in-cheek - cf. Schwarzenegger for president - but it's 4 years or so until the election after next ... maybe I'm in need of a reality check, but I'm honestly starting to think he could pull it off -push the 'yeah, I do the whole 1930s schoolboy act, but actually deep down I'm an extremely competent leader' line, etc.
@wA7racer As you will no doubt be aware the Turks are not an homogeneous race and possess a deal of European blood.Boris himself claims his great-grandfather was a Circassian-which apart from being aliens on Star Trek-were reknowned for their fair colouring (his is German) and beauty. Boris-consummate politician- found it expedient whilst appealing to London's very mixed electorate to highlight this rather tenuous claim.Had there been enfranchised aliens living in Whitechapel...!
Bizarre. We are, it seems, about to vote in a load of Old Etonians, who will rule us (note the word "rule") with the same degree of sympathy and understanding which they used to give their fags at school.
The main difference, of course, is that being a fag at Eton only lasted a year.
trust, you don't. Just cos he's funny, doesn't give him the right to political authority. He only got elected as Mayor due to his comical apperances on one of Britains most watched political comedy Quiz shows.
Having tv personalities in positions of power is not a good thing!
Boris at his best dealing with a very tough interviewer. Please note, the people slating the BBC and Paxman, this is exactly their job to be tough and difficult with people they interview.
The BBC is one of the finest global institutions. it has created some of the worlds greatest cultural art and has one of if not the finest journalist wings on earth. It is respected and known in every nation. As an asset to Britain and it's wider interests it is second to none.
People like you, who have not though about it and only care about saving a couple hundred quid every year will be the first to moan when it is gone and Britain is not so Great any more.
It is funded by a tax, and it is a tax I fully support.
Just like I fully support the tax I pay for police to keep us safe.
Let's just be honest, whether we think the BBC is good (which is clearly is) or not, let's just be honest and admit that we pay a tv tax for it to run, not a licence fee, and although independent from government operationally, it is funded by the government.
Do you really think it should be a role of gov't to fund a television network? Particularly when schools, hospitals, military etc should be clear priorities?
The Governmnet doesn't fund it. Those of us with a Tv License do... and I am proud to pay it. The BBC is truely an incredible institution, renound the world over. It is certainly one of Britains greatest cultural/political assets, there is no other media corporation like it in the world.
What? You mean we get to choose whether we pay for that license? Of course not, the gov't forces us to pay that if we want a t.v. That's like saying that the income tax is not a product of gov't, it's just something that we workers choose to pay...get real.
Gov't should be concentrating on reducing waiting lists, making sure that people in state schools can actually read and write etc, not making sure that Chris Moyles and Jonathan Ross get their millions.
You are twisting my words... and I'm not sure why. It is your choice whether you want a TV or not? but that's not what I'm talking about. Only responding to a comment which said that the government funded the BBC. The BBC is funded by the people, and is independent of the government. Sorry that you don't like the Tv license.... i happen to love it. The BBC is our greatest national asset.
Paxman proves conclusively what a silly ninny he is - Mr. Soundbite. An over-paid, over-hyped media arse-hole. Boris is upper-class and eccentric, but likeable and with a big heart. Rather have Boris than the trendy and oh-so PC New (pseudo) Labour chattering dinner party set who hi-jacked the working man's party and turned our country into a panty-assed nanny state. Brown's almost as thick as Blair and it's high time to boot the buggers (in every sense) out of office.
wow Borris and Cameron both CANNOT answer the question on Lisbon. They CANNOT answer. So easy to do when your in opposition. Referendum or not if it is ratified. Yes or No? Yes or No!? Borris is spouting bull but Jeremy really shouldnt have asked about the oxford years.
ps Borris I do give a monkies! We don't all do what you did at university!
Boris. The kind of guy you'd like to have an argument with. Paxman wasn't so good there, too much insinuated inverse snobbery, not enough objectivity. There's no need to ask Bori

Boris Johnson - the only man alive who can put Paxam in his place.

@JohnAdamCulligan very English but his roots are Turkish...
wA7racer 1 year ago
@wA7racer As you will no doubt be aware the Turks are not an homogeneous race and possess a deal of European blood.Boris himself claims his great-grandfather was a Circassian-which apart from being aliens on Star Trek-were reknowned for their fair colouring (his is German) and beauty. Boris-consummate politician- found it expedient whilst appealing to London's very mixed electorate to highlight this rather tenuous claim.Had there been enfranchised aliens living in Whitechapel...!

Yaaaas ... a first rate chap.

Please note, the people slating the BBC and Paxman, this is exactly their job to be tough and difficult with people they interview.
ecg1992 2 years ago
just typical of the bbc. Cutting the interview as paxmans wage is under scrutiny. So biased

The BBC (and therefore Paxman) IS funded by the taxpayer.
The "licence fee" is not a licence fee.
It is a TAX, by definition.
richardcadbury 2 years ago 3
The BBC is one of the finest global institutions. it has created some of the worlds greatest cultural art and has one of if not the finest journalist wings on earth. It is respected and known in every nation. As an asset to Britain and it's wider interests it is second to none.
People like you, who have not though about it and only care about saving a couple hundred quid every year will be the first to moan when it is gone and Britain is not so Great any more.
bringmemybow 2 years ago
I was unclear before.
I completely agree with everything you say.
It is funded by a tax, and it is a tax I fully support.
Just like I fully support the tax I pay for police to keep us safe.
Let's just be honest, whether we think the BBC is good (which is clearly is) or not, let's just be honest and admit that we pay a tv tax for it to run, not a licence fee, and although independent from government operationally, it is funded by the government.
richardcadbury 2 years ago
Do you really think it should be a role of gov't to fund a television network? Particularly when schools, hospitals, military etc should be clear priorities?
beelz3333 2 years ago
The Governmnet doesn't fund it. Those of us with a Tv License do... and I am proud to pay it. The BBC is truely an incredible institution, renound the world over. It is certainly one of Britains greatest cultural/political assets, there is no other media corporation like it in the world.
bringmemybow 2 years ago
What? You mean we get to choose whether we pay for that license? Of course not, the gov't forces us to pay that if we want a t.v. That's like saying that the income tax is not a product of gov't, it's just something that we workers choose to pay...get real.
Gov't should be concentrating on reducing waiting lists, making sure that people in state schools can actually read and write etc, not making sure that Chris Moyles and Jonathan Ross get their millions.
beelz3333 2 years ago

Boris. The kind of guy you'd like to have an argument with. Paxman wasn't so good there, too much insinuated inverse snobbery, not enough objectivity. There's no need to ask Bori
