  • Fun fact: For those who played Silent Hill 4, the superintendent of the apartment is James' dad. According to Henry (protagonist of SH4), the superintendent mentioned James and said when he visited Silent Hill, he never came back.

One can be lead to believe this means the In Water ending is canon. If it is not, though, it wouldn't be the first thing SH4 messed up on, story-wise. So take that tidbit in SH4 with a grain of salt.

  • @GhenryPerez Or maybe the canon ending was "rebirth" and Maria can exist only in the borders of Silent Hill? That would explain why he didn't want to leave her alone in that town.... and why he didn't came back...

  • @44magnum3333 Oh shit thanks man, this was the ending I got in my first playthrough I had no idea he killed himself

  • So james dies in this ending??

  • @Detox216 yeah, he drives his car into a lake. not my favorite.

  • this was a one-take

  • am crying so fucking hard right now am happy and sad at the same time god this ending heartbreaking

  • Dont Die James... DONT DIE!!!!

  • *sniff* i'm not crying...it's dusty here *cries*

  • i had cried, cried, this games will always be the most beautiful thing in the world of the video games....

  • Konami said this is the true canon ending to SH2

  • @PurpleZebraKILLS konami said its upto the player to decide hence why james is never seen of or heard of during and after the game so ppl talk about it over and over i think that was his real reason to go to silent hill but dependin' on how well and what u do its really upto u what ending u get

  • @PurpleZebraKILLS Actually the novel follows that ending... it doesn't means is cannon

  • in my first time this was my ending

  • unlike the other games in the series, silent hill 2 had no bad ending, and no good ending. the maria ending had beloved friend still alive but james did not realize his sins, the leave ending had James realize his sins but maria is dead, and the in water has james die but he gets to be with mary again.

  • You didn't understand it. There was no guarantee mary was going to be where james was going. The writing was on the wall remember. James knew that. He was killing himself as punishment just like silent hill wanted. Silent hill tricked him yet also made him understand his human weakness. That is the sick humor and tragedy of silent hill. A real man lives on with the burden and guilt just like the letter wanted james to do. But SH through angela and eddie tricked James.

  • why wont this bitch shut up

  • I love how at certain points you can hear the voice actor trying not to cry. At some points you can hear her heart break.

  • @PandaChanIzAMunster And can you believe they're getting someone else to re-record it for the HD collection?! So lame.

  • @PandaChanIzAMunster Eh... i think thats why they call it 'acting'.

  • Silent Hill 2 has the most emotional ending of the entire series. And it is pretty scary but scare factor wise i would have to say Silent hill 3 tops it. * Spoiler ahead if you haven't played SH3. *

What do you think is more tragic , the ending to Silent hill 2 or When harry dies in SH3? I was like NOOOOOOO they killed off the main character to SH1!

  • how do i get this ending ? i got the rebirth and the leave and i think the dog

  • @rtti88 this is the "in water" ending, which means you basically do everything reckless. examine angela's knife often, try to not heal often, don't protect maria, don't listen to mary's speech at the final cutscenes.....i'm not 100% sure, but I DO know i examined the knife a ton.

  • @rtti88 its a couple different ways, main way is to keep low health through out the whole game. and when you hear the voice in the hall way towards the end of the game, listen to it the whole way through, before leaving the hall way. Also there is tape recording in one of the hotel rooms, listen to that

  • Raise your hans grown lads and ladys...Who else cried like a baby at this ending.

  • I finished this game for the first time last night and I was awe-struck. Next to XenoGears and Shenmue, this is the most intense experience a video-game can offer.

  • Still, while this one is sad and tragic, I still prefer the "Leave" ending. It that one, James goes through this whole psychological ordeal to finally realize his true thoughts and intentions during those 3 years. And despite all he did, Mary understood and forgave him, telling him to go live his life. He leaves a redeemed man with a new outlook on his life.

Yet again, I just like my endings more semi-sweet.

  • You know, this is not really a bad ending. Sure, James kills himself, but at least he does it with a clear conscience, because he's acknowledged that he killed Mary for good as well as bad reasons. In the Maria ending, he is doomed to repeat his ordeal in Silent Hill over and over again, until he learns to come to terms with what he did, which is a much worse fate than this.

  • @seyallica killing yourself is always the worst fate.period.

  • @88Hyo You're missing the point. This ending isn't good or bad, its bittersweet; that's what makes Silent Hill 2 so great - it leaves room for ambiguity. You could say that's its bad cause he kills himself, but at least he kills himself only cause he wants to be with Mary, not because he feels guilty for killing her. Consider the controversial issues dealt with in Silent Hill 2: euthanasia, murder as a response to domestic abuse.. This ending beautifully captures the ambiguity of Silent Hill 2.

  • @seyallica he still kills himself.like in sillent hill homecoming: the underwater ending it's alex sacrifycing himself so his brother doesn't need to die, right?then his family can live happy,so he kind off dies happy.but he still dies. death is not freedom,is not redemption.it's death.

  • @88Hyo James kills himself only to be with Mary, not for freedom or redemption. Its an ambiguous fate befitting such a complex character. The whole point of his ordeal in Silent Hill was to come to terms with his role in Mary's murder, and he does; he is free to either leave Silent Hill, or in this case, kill himself, unlike the Maria ending where he's still in Silent Hill. Whether he will meet Mary or not, it doesn't matter; we can't judge him, we haven't gone through what he has.

  • Saddest yet horrifying game ever made, anyway its coming to PSN this November and I am going to get it!

  • I heard that the voice actress of Mary and Maria cried after she finished reading this letter.

  • This was the first ending I got, and I remember hearing the car speed up and James saying "Now we can be together." and I HOWLED. Like "NOOOOOoooooooo!". And my mom was beside me equally shocked and apalled, then she laughed because of all I had went through XD

  • I never really understood this ending. Did he read the letter before killing himself? His wife tell's him to live on and do what's best for him and he goes and kills himself. I'm sorry but that's just retarded. It's really sad and all and the voice acting is great but seriously I don't understand. I never played the game, but I know the general backstory so maybe I missed something?

  • @xaqua93x You need to play the game in order to really understand.

  • @xaqua93x He probably read the letter before he came to Silent Hill, but after killing Mary. But I think by that time his mind was so unhinged that he read the first part only and immediately thought that Mary was waiting for him somewhere in Silent Hill. In the intro scene, he reads the only first part of the letter(up till "waiting for you") and thinks that Mary may be in Silent Hill waiting for him. However, when read in context, the letter is clearly written by Mary before she died.

  • @xaqua93x When James first came to Silent Hill, he thought Mary was somehow waiting for him there, and as evidence, he talks about a letter, which is this one, but he only reads up till "Waiting for you". The ending reveals that when read in context, Mary's letter was actually meant to be given to James after her death, but James, after killing her, probably read it and in his unhinged state of mind thought that Mary was waiting for him in Silent Hill.

  • @xaqua93x In essence, James read only the first part of the letter, up till "waiting for you". Taken out of context, it does sound as if Mary is waiting for him in Silent Hill. If he had read the full letter, he would've understood the whole context, and realized that Mary actually wanted him to go on living. But James was probably half - crazy when he read the letter; he just killed his wife.

  • I think this is the most satisfying ending, especially if you've seen the hotel video with the sound intact. If you haven't, search for silent hill 2 videotape UNCENSORED AND UNRATED.

James came to Silent Hill not to find Mary and make up with her but to face his past, and that's what he does, then he kills himself. He is the worst thing in Silent Hill 2, and that's kind of cool.

  • This was the first ending I got back when I played this game in 2001. Just wretchedly painful to the point where it becomes poetic.

  • i'll kill japanese for making one of the best game having a terrible ending

  • @seemsee112 Dude, its great because it's terrible.

  • @seemsee112 Theres multiple endings so what if a few are not very good watch the other 1s.

  • My first ending and my favorite

    Sad, very sad

  • This sequence will be what makes or breaks the HD collection. Most of the original performances had a cheesy, amiable charm to them but Maria's voice actor put in a genuinly brilliant performance here. I'm not very confident of the HD version equalling it tbh.

  • Hey 9 Dislikers, please do something for me.....go on with your life.

  • My breath smells of wet dog?!

  • I think this is the most likely ending.

I doubt that's really Mary's spirit there; if so why is she still sick and lying on a bed? Its more likely that this whole scene symbolizes how James has finally acknowledged what he did and has come to terms with his guilt. The reason why Mary is sick and vulnerable on the bed is because that is James mental image of her when he murdered her.

  • this was my favourite ending because it's saddest. ;'(

  • It's interesting that there was a pause before the last sentence.

It made me think that James was in the middle of committing suicide in the water almost dead when he read the last sentence and goes "Oh shiglubglubglub"

Sorry just had to say it XD

  • Lol spoiler warning, No S**t.

  • And people say the voice acting in this game is sub-par to downright terrible.. I wonder if they even finished the game. Sure dialogue was a little awkward and delivery wasn't the best, but I think it all balances out with this superb ending monologue. Seriously this is just about the best voice acting I've ever heard. And now I hear they're REPLACING the original voices for the SH HD collection!? SH's future is already in shambles, now they want to screw up the originals? Facepalm...

  • always waters my eyes :'(

  • This is the Best Ending ! Who agrees? Thumbs up :)

  • @GothicFan1985 the endings where people die is always best, cause their death is so sad when u learned to love them so much throughout the games course..

  • i always get this ending... i didnt even no there was other endings... can someone explain how to get other endings?

  • @ThatSongReplay I suggest you to read on uhshints.com

    they write great hints...

  • @Yushellia okay... thank you =)

  • After the whole letter was read out, after a looong pause then the last part "James, you made me happy." showed up. It worked SO well. I cried like a mama's boy.

    Ahh shit. Sob.

  • OMG If only my future wife would say that to me! LOL that means I wish for her to die! *wink wink* LOLOL.

  • did he kill maruy by suffocating her with a pillow? Why did he kill her, if he loved her? please someone explain to me what happened?

  • @darkpink44 because she was in pain, and he couldn't stand to see her suffer anymore. I know, it's sad. I cried when I got this ending once, but he did it for her, I guess...

  • He reasoned that he should die for the way he treated Mary, it would be a fair trade in his head. It also makes sense that he would die in the lake, if I remember correctly in the game it described it as a place for 'tormented souls'.

Alternatively, the other endings involve either 1) Maria returning with James but with an illness OR 2) James adopting Laura and fulfilling Mary's dream of raising her. Those are also decent trades considering the justice involved.

  • I dont understand, if james cant live without mary wheres is he taking her to? oes he commite suicide??

  • @Albertoctro1

he took mary into his car because he couldnt live without her so he drove into the sea and killed himself so they could be together.

  • @alexander5860 awsome!

  • Every time I get this ending I just break down in tears. This is the only game that's got me to cry, and it'll probably be the only one. Best game ever!

  • in this ending ,mary dies before she could tell james to live... she just dies telling "james.." unlike the leave ending

  • this seems to be the most appropriate ending for this game... i got this ending.

  • I loved this game....Jimi Hendix's song "The wind Cries Mary" would fit this game perfectly....

  • beautiful ending, sad by the way... this game was just perfect, how wish we could see a silent hill again just like this !

  • can someone summarise that for me? I have a short attention span.

  • this must be the best convincing voice that i heard in a game

  • Simply beautiful ending... so sad...

I've got this ending when I played the game...

  • The true ending : \

  • umm so what if after james dies mary said..."no james we cant be together, im in heaven an your going to hell for killing me and your self, thats 2sins, u horny-never took me back to silent hill-basterd!!!" lol im just sayin

  • i need to take a pee now!!!

  • i really want download the audio.. but i can't find it in anywhere! Anyone knows where i can download this letter?

  • @tediosim if u want to download the audio of this video, u can do it by going to wwwDOTlistentoyoutubeDOTcom(:

  • Between Sh2 and Shsm, I got an ending where I was abused by my wife, and committed suicide :\

    Great XD

  • @1ApertureRealist how did you do in SHSM?

  • @ddrstandard2008 The one where she is able to let you go,

and the part where HArry gets beaten to shit by his wife D:

  • @1ApertureRealist I said "how did you do?" In SHSM the game grades you on how well you did playing the game

  • @ddrstandard2008 Oh, Iunno. It's been a while. Pretty decent though :3

  • @1ApertureRealist did you try your best?

  • And anotherone who make a suicide. F(

  • this ending is so canon....for me anyways

  • I had the game and i finished twice, and i get the "in water ending" and "leave" ending and both of them almost make me cry, they were so sad,i consider that SH2 is the best of the series...Thumbs up if you think the same

  • @godofwar2fan09 It's Silent Hill, you were expecting a happy ending?

  • @FacelessScribe,well,not really,i just said that i consider that SH2 is the saddest of all,and about the "happy" endings, well, some SH has some "happy" endings

  • Sry if I am being too dense, but, just to confirm, did he actually killed himfelf??.... O.o A Couple-in-love ending, though. But I prefer the Leave ending. He's already been through so much, give him a rest :)

  • @AkamiLuMi yes eternal rest :( mixed feelings

  • @AkamiLuMi There's the rebirth ending.

  • I like the leave ending the best personally

  • @setharoth114 I think leave was the ideal ending.

  • Silent Hill 2 ending possibilities:

Leave - 80% (maybe he disappeared because he went into hiding with Laura)

In Water - 90% (maybe he disappeared because he really died)

Rebirth - 77% (maybe he disappeared while going to Rebirth Island)

Maria - 60% (maybe he disappeared because he went into hiding with Maria)

UFO - 72% (maybe he disappeared because he's abducted by aliens)

Dog - 1% (I don't think he disappeared because of the dog. LOL XD)

Thumbs up if you agree with this. :D

  • amazing voice acting on mary. such a sad ending. i can't stand thinking this is the true ending. i think i'll just pretend that after silent hill he rode off into the sunset to go live somewhere else and that's why his dad never saw him again ):

  • The music is so insanely beautiful.

  • 「true ending」

    info by wikipedia

  • This actually has the power to make me cry...

  • I'm sorry, but James is a FUCKED up and shady person! How the heck do u kill ur dying wife? If he REALLY loved her he would have stayed by her side no matter what. Bitter or happy. His final act as a husband is to make sure her last remaining life on earth is happy and comfortable. But nooo, The way I see it he wanted to be selfish and wanted her to hurry up and die so he can screw new women. Correct me if I'm wrong, but thats what I've gathered from the game....

  • @Spiceycocoa I think he killed her because his wife told him to. She was in so much pain that she asked him to kill her.

  • @Spiceycocoa yeah, that's a good thinking..but he's also a really nice guy, from start to the end. He also killed himself at the end,for her,so you can't really be that harsh ;)

  • @Spiceycocoa I can understand where you are coming from with your interpretation, and in this game there is no "correct ending" . But, if he reallly only wanted to "screw new women" than he would have gone and did Maria. In fact, he killed himself because she was not Mary, and he said before the fight. "without Mary I just can't go on". Well that's how I look at it, but again since this game is mostly left for interpretation it depends on person.

  • @sandwich989 LOL. Yeah, I see your point. I think he never got the chance with Maria that's why. haha But one thing I will say about Silent Hill is that they do "hint" at the "correct Ending" in their games because ( I forgot which Silent Hill game it was, I think it was SH 4: The room) where James's father(Frank Sunderland) makes an appearance in the game and he hints that James never came back from Silent Hill so I'm thinking the "real ending" is where he killed himself.

  • @Spiceycocoa 1 Month late but, at least that means he stayed true to Mary :D

  • @Spiceycocoa sorry i can't say you've played the game correctly/perhaps you have some bias against men that makes you think this way. Mary was suffering, James as well. James wasn't really being selfish. In those three years he was unable to get his life back together after his wife died. So this Silent Hill is a manifestation of James's mind. Somewhere in that period of time he must've had a split-personality since he couldn't remember what happened to Mary. This journey helps him find the truth

  • Please, if someone, anyone, knows how or where to find the audio track of this ending, I would be eternally grateful. I have searched through all the soundtracks and I can't find this song. If anyone knows how to find it (other than just downloading the damn video as an MP3) as I said, I would be eternally grateful.

  • seriously awesome voice acting.

  • This is such a sad video, but 7:14 onwards KILLS me. The way she says "Im so sorry" made me burst into tears. Truly amazing voice-work. To put it into perspective, I've never even played this game. But this seriously is one of the most emotional things I've ever heard or read.

  • The part where I hear the car speed up gives me chills.

  • so he kills himself?

  • @JapaneseAnimationMan Yep. This is also the true ending that goes along with the rest of the story.

  • James.. why dont you kill yourself at the beggining ?

  • The Silent Hill series proves that videogames can be art, especially SH2.

  • @trafficjam10

True. The first two Silent Hill were art, and the third was a good scare with a somewhat cliched story.

Starting from SH4 (which wasn't even developed as a SH game to begin with and it shows) it veered into more action and cheap scares.

Sadly it seems most that play these games think it's all about clubbing monsters and running around.

  • @McLarenMercedes agreed

  • @McLarenMercedes Everyone knows this.

  • D; this is very sad.....alll i could ever get is the leave ending

  • @LunaHokuto the in watter ending can be achieved by getting the knife from the crazy girl... (cant remember her name... to lazy to look it up) and examining it frequently and spending most of the game at low health. basicly be emo through the whole game.

  • @LunaHokuto It's easy to get ... examine Angela's knife frequently, read the diary on the hospital roof, read the Neely's Bar messages, and listen to the entire hallway conversation (after the dual PH fight). Also, go through a lot of the game on low health. An easy way to do this is after PH knocks James off the hospital roof. Don't heal up until after watching the videotape in Room 312. You can be at full health before & after those spots and still meet the low health requirement.

  • This one was worse than the "Wicked and weak ending" of Sh Shattered memories.

I never thought I'd say it. Why do I always get suicidal and Abused endings?

  • "And the holocaust was complete."

  • I just completed this game for the first time on my Xbox... and damn. I've never been so moved by playing a video game.

  • Best ending ever

  • Did james at 2:55 when he got mary inside the car drived and crashed the car and got himself killed!? cause thats what i understand from ''Now we can be together''.

  • Aw the memories, I got this ending :(!

  • BTW, my comment about the UFO ending a joke, in case some people don't leave their sarcasm-dars on lol.

  • I dont understand - why does James recieve only the first part of the letter? Also, what does he means when he says mary "took away his life"?

  • @retsamgod maybe he just ignored the rest of it, maybe laura had the second half.. he spent three years by her side, it wore him down and he seemed hell bent on seeing her again

  • @GerardBlaize Now that you mention it, if you examine mary's letter while in the lakeview hotel it will be blank. Maybe it was always a blank piece of paper, and he didn't receive a letter at all.

  • Mary sure does write alot for someone who's dying...

  • I like this ending because it's the most logical and it's canon to the series. You find that out in SH4 if you're clever; an old man named Sutherland tells you his son never came back from his trip...

  • @MarusGTR He could have just gone into hiding with Laura. He IS a murderer you know. We will never be sure what happend to James.

  • @Otis527 He was a murderer through psychosis...that's why his mind blocked the truth postfact and he ended up killing himself with grief when he regained his memory.

@retsamgod True. We can agree it's the real cannon since he reappears in latter SH UFO endings.

As for the letter, it was in his mind. As the game goes on and his mind unlocks, his memory of the letter gradually fades. He had read it after killing her and left it at her bedside, which he finds again at the end of the game.

  • @MarusGTR he doesnt come back in the ufo ending either lol

  • Um...I hate this ending. I think that if the main character dies at the end of the game, the entire game was completely pointless. Why does everyone like this?

  • @IndalecioCeleste i hate it too -.-*

  • @IndalecioCeleste was hamlet a pointless play? the whole point is the journey, not just the ending you arrive at

  • @GerardBlaize ...I've read hamlet...I thought it was pointless.

  • @IndalecioCeleste its a play, not a book, go see it :P

  • @GerardBlaize I know it's not a book, but one can read screenplays. I'm no stranger to the theatre either. Listen, my own opinion is my own opinion, and I'm sorry you don't like it. I don't like the "In Water" ending. I prefer any of the others because I believe they're far more fulfilling. I don't understand why people can be satisfied when the protagonist dies, but it's okay if they are. Is that enough for you?

  • @IndalecioCeleste Really? u dont think its the best ending in this game? dude he loves her he cant live witohut her and he realised that after the ( you ) finish the game, i love this ending real love but at the same time he hate her but he still he cant consider the life without her he die to stay with her awesome ending with the narrartion :)

    +

  • @IndalecioCeleste thats fair enough- just dont see whats wrong with the protagonist dying if it fits the narrative

  • definitely the best ending for the game. - beautifully tragic.

it's much better than james running off with maria. *shivers*

  • This game is badass

  • "You made me happy", its waaayyyy better than "Make us whole again" from Dead Space LOL

  • @DevinFilms66792

i find the "Make us whole again" too weird to be true...they just make that to make people say WTF...and them in the ending they understand why of that...but even with that they could come with something better lol

  • dog endings better

  • Leave is probably the most satisfactory ending game-wise, but this ending is just tragically beautiful...

  • Comment removed

  • fuck... how can a game be so freakin good like this??? ''I <3 SILENT HILL 2'' ill let write this on a black t-shirt xDD

  • Does anyone know what is officially the best ending for this game?

  • Isn't silent hill based on a drug called White Claudia which was produced by Dr. Kauffmen or whatever, In silent hill 1 the ashes were from the produced from a pharmaceutical plant that blew up and got into the air?

  • he dug her up?!?!?! O_O

  • This is probably the most depressing ending of a videogame ever.

  • @GenoAwesome Not really Marston's death at the end of Red Dead is sadder IMO. Like James said "Without you Mary, I've got nothing," He wanted to die. Marston was a retired gunslinger looking forward to living on his farm with his family.

  • @tonyAJ420 You could have placed something like.. i don't know... SPOILER tags, maybe?

You know, for the people that HAVEN't played Red Dead Redemption... such as me?

  • @tonyAJ420 nice job dickhead spoling the end of that game for me.

  • @GenoAwesome Followed by 21 sacraments of SH4 I guess :/.

I got this ending, I nearly cried :(

  • @GenoAwesome not to mention kinda fucked up too. this whole game is genius, its a damn shame they dont make games like this anymore....

  • Crazy Bitch, ruining James' life.

  • T-T T_T :'( so sad.

  • Considering all that you learn about James by the end of the game, I think this is the best possible ending for him.
