I never realised in the early days he tried to imitate Ian. And please nobdy try to tell me I am wrong. You can clearly see here he is copyin Ian Curtis.
@MOONST0MP Well Probably you are right. But it is also true that such style was very popular at the time. Bauhaus and Sister of Mercy frontmans acted in a similar way.
I see this video has been up for a long time but it's first I'm seeing it. I wasn't aware NO played at Ukrainian House 1981. I went to see them at Paradise Garage and thought that was their first NYC show. How did I miss this? Thanks for putting this up. NO the band of 80's.
@twentyarms "God save the Queen" by Sex Pistols, "Lust for Life" by, Iggy Pop and "Twenty Four Hours" by Joy Division......Check the history and you find all the connections. ,,,
while drinking 2 packs of beer to get sober and see the light.
Probably the best thing to come out of Manchester. As well as The Smiths of course. No one can ever compare to New Order or be as close they are just brilliant.
I´m blessed by God that he showed the way to discover the Warsaw which in turn became Joy Division and then New Order. I never saw Warsaw live but I did saw Joy Division live in Berlin in winter of 1980 and soon after wards I moved to US to NYC. and God blessed me again to see New Order live in the East Greenwich Village. The Very same gig as You see on this Video.
They changed my live forever. The way i think and do things everyday is the result of the influence which I got from them... Peace
@twentyarms I see that you are a loosie goosie observer, quoting some word from my old comment (the God thing) that has nothing to do with NO nor JD,
I'm spiritual atheist actually. The more I watch Pat Condell the more I enjoy my freedom in life. Old habits die hard, so let me say again, I'm blessed, to be one of very few who saw Ian performing life gig and also this one here by NO up above.
@TheGhostDreams Oh, I see. You're reading way too much into it. I just find it amusing when people invoke divine providence. I didn't intend to insult you.
I won't fawn over you though, as you seem to expect with some pretty shameless and self important attempts to brag about seeing Ian Curtis live, as if he is some sort of deity. And god save the queen? Mayhaps you just have a flair for the divine.
@twentyarms Look I'm beyond the point in my life to be bragging about anything.and especially arguing about music. Back then when you weren't even on a drawing board (you are 29) we were into this music for the sake of music and art (yes the lyrics of Ian are art). We were outsiders. Nobody knew them. They were on the back pages of Melody Maker. Now all of a sudden everybody are fans of JD/NO. What I wrote in my first comment came from my emmontional heart listening to the Procession......Deity?
The farther New Order got a way from Joy Division the worse they got. The early stuff was quite good, the last few c.d.'s strait-up crap. Yea I know, spoken like a true JD fan. I am what I am....
That's crap, New Order were amazing. Granted the last record released in 2005 wasn't great but some of their other later stuff was superb. Technique IMO is one of the best albums of all time, and how you can say classics like Run, Vanishing Point, Regret, Crystal, Here to Stay are 'straight up crap' I don't know.
I don't know what Barney was stoned on there, but he fucked right up lmao.Arsed?I love these guys,Manchester/Salfords finest.Barney,my mam,Val, looked after yours,it would be nice if you stopped by to say hello, she's still in Irlam.
This performance actually sounds great on the original tape, which is now on DVD. As some have called this performance poor, that may be partly due to youtube refining down the specs. But it was a raw and unpretentious performance, which I love. This music was/is mind blowing when you consider the state of popular music in 1981.
the synth intro promises so much, the band begin to spoil it by playing their instuments then sumner, who sings like a man with the worst hangover completely buries it.
if anyone listenrd to that and is true new order fan we have a lot in common,....contact me ...prefrably female/slim/gud sense of humour ....you`ll know what i`me on about ....fukin love neworder but that was crap.....only gud cause of who it is
Sublime concert ! Sublime album ! Sublime Chanson ! Merci à Joy Division et à New Order pour ce bonheur qui a résisté à deux décénies cyniques et qui résistera aux siècles !
@pbh94515 Well if you were in New Order, you could have it both ways. They are quite rich, you know! They downplay it and are modest, but don't forget that Factory was the only label to ever give artists 50% of record sales. (Most labels give in the range of 2 to 5 percent). And they sold a hell of a lot of records on Factory, and tons more after moving to the Warner Bros. family with endless reissues, remix albums and "best of"/"greatest hits" comps. They even went platinum in the USA!
@leamanc Have you read the history of Factory or Hooky's book on the Hacienda? They spent a helluva lot propping up both the label and the Hac. Not that they're paupers by any means.
@sfa2 I haven't ready Hooky's book (dying too though!), but I do know that they basically carried Factory and of course the Hacienda throughout the 1980s. Ironically, they have made more money since leaving Factory and making less New Order product. :-) Warners' relentless re-issuing, re-mixing and re-packaging of their material have done them quite well. They were even well enough off in the Joy Division days to ignore a $1million signing offer from Warners in 1980.
So is that Gillian singing, "Alone, alone, alone, alone?" I cannot think of another point in Substance version of the song with backing vocals? I too noticed her in Doubts Even Here. I cannot, however, think of any other tracks where she does backing vocals. What are the otherS? I agree, Procession is one of the best. I think my fav, odly enough, is The Him. Maybe next is Vanishing Point, but that is hard to say.
Positively one of the best songs ever. I like all New Order music, but songs like these make me wish they never went upbeat. They simply have so much of the Joy Division energy at this point.
"...this band does not perform encores." Quote from a Belgian promoter attempting to avert a riot at a new order gig following the band's abrupt exit.
