  • Uhh..... Persephone is the goddess of flowers, not agriculture. Demeter is!

  • @ChirpLily276

Where do you see anyone claiming otherwise?

  • wow Hades is a nice person! 0_o

  • "Do I look all right?" Awww! I love Hades in this! He's so shy and unassuming.

  • dayum Apollo is HOTTT!!!!

  • @tinx16

Indeed. He actually looks much better in the final episode: "Hercules & the Titans: the Last Battle."

    Check it out.

  • I remember this show! I wish it was on DVD!

  • @1:10 'The Bounty of the Earth is not here for your amusement'. I wish some of the multibillion dollar broken corrupted soul destroying eco breaking companies could meet up with Demetrius!

  • @thewabbiteer

    ...Demeter. ;)

Good point though, and I definitely agree!

  • Comment removed

  • @thewabbiteer I personally agree with you! Some people treated the Earth like empty black souls!

  • so inaccurate, but still I can't help watching this. lolz.

  • this narrator is crazy

  • that Hades is hot! I wouldnt mind Persephone's fate!

  • @tqvivaperu

    LOL!

  • Hey stop hating on Hades. as the greek myths go he wasnt a bad guy. he was the one to call on in a jam. he was just distant from others and a loner. death doesnt take a vacation. how would u like it if u are the eldest and ur 2 younger bros tricked u into guarding the dead for eternity? at least u get the Helm of Darkness and are filthy rich (think all precious minerals and ores are in the earth where he lives) only perks of the job.

  • Dude Persephone looks like a dude. And Hades needs to be hotter and not have blue hair.....but I love this story its my favorite. Except Persephone actually gets raped by Hades according to Greek Mythology. ANd she was taken to the underworld against her will.

  • @Spitfyrus

All of which would be extreeeeemly appropriate for a children's show. :-/

  • @ImmortalSynn LMAO I know I know but I can dream cant I :P

  • @Spitfyrus

    Weird.

  • @Spitfyrus Depends on which version you hear. The roman verson she is definately raped but it depends where you hear it from.

  • @Spitfyrus persephone does not get raped by hades. The so-called "rape" of Persephone is a fabrication. The original version--in the Orphics-- uses a word that means "taken," rather than "raped." It is a term used in ancient Greek marriage ceremonies, whereby the groom rides by chariot to his bride's childhood home and carries her from there to his own home. Hades was not kidnapping Persephone, but marrying her. In the original version of the mythology, she is not an unwilling participant

  • @eu1me1moi

Sorry, but you have no blessed idea what you're talking about, lol.

    1) the ACTUAL original telling of the story was in the Theogony, which predates the earliest known reference to/by the Orphic cults, by more than a century.

    2) Hesiod is expressly clear in describing Persephone as an unwilling participant.

    3) In later traditions, the constitution of the goddess Macaria is said to be a direct result of her being born out of Persephone's shame/sorrow at being raped.

  • @ImmortalSynn It is also a matter of interpretation. There is a mystery surrounding the story of Persephone is whether she was just swept away by Hades or actually raped.A clue can be found by examining the texts translated from Greek to Latin. There is no mention of rape in any of the early Greek texts but we start to see its introd. with the coming of the Romans near the turn of the century. All Greek sources describing Hades' action use the vb harpazein, meaning "to seize, snatch, carry off".

  • @eu1me1moi

Ummmm, you had no idea what the origin of the story even WAS, yet you're going to sit here and definitively state what was or was not written (or intended in the diction) therein?

    That's certainly..... "interesting."

  • @ImmortalSynn In later Latin translations of the texts the word raptu is used instead, which does imply "abduction, seizure, rape".Indeed the first mention is in the Theogony, but Hesiod describes the abduction of Persephone by Aidoneus in-what?-3 lines? The first full trascription is the Hymn to Demeter by Homer. He too speaks of the “rape” but is matter of interpretation like i said. In my opinion it’s very important the translation and the meaning of the word “rape” adapted in those times.

  • Wasn't Hades the bastard that kidnapped Persephone in the first place? .__.

Still, pretty awesome series from my childhood :)

  • Hades kidnapped Persephone. she didnt go voluntarily.

  • I want a Hades!

  • Who's the Salamander-guy?

  • @ShadowDJ94

I'm completely confounded on that one... I think he's just a random creation by the series, but don't quote me on that. I don't know of any similar character from the classics.

  • @ImmortalSynn Actually, according to the classic myths, this DID happen. A boy offended Demeter and she turned him into a lizard. He was proptly eaten by an eagle. Hades changed him back into a human and gave his soul to Persephone to help tend her gardens in the Underworld.

  • @Gunganfan

I'm not doubting, I'm just also at a loss as to where that comes from. What compilation and by what author(s)?

  • @ShadowDJ94 In one of the mythic versions of this, he was an annoying little boy she took care of. After awhile of her being tired of him, she turns him into a salamander and feeds him to a hawk. nice eh? lol apparently he was a total pain in the ass, but was originally to be turned into a god.

At least thats the short version I can remember. There isnt a whole lot on that part of the story, he came along after Persephone left though, not before.

  • hm, i always imagined Ceberus being bigger, like the Disney Hercules version. oh, well, i still love the series. :)

  • @EdoubleM

I do as well. That, and I hate how they pronounce it here.

  • Hades rules! Blue lizard kid is evil I'm glad he got stuck in a whoe! Haha! :)

  • Hades kicks ass! I like this interpretation of the story better than the whole rape and abduction thing! That depiction makes Hades sound evil! He wasn't actually evil and I don't know why all of these modernized versions of Hades make him evil (ex. new clash of the titans, and disney's hercules). Its not his fault he got stuck with the underworld!

  • So Persephone is a adrenaline junkie? Cool interpretation!

Wow, Hades is kinda cute for once. I always thought he should be portrayed on tv as neither bad nor good but always neutral. Other than kidnapping Persephone, he is way nicer than zeus overall.

    3:28 I wish I had rainbow powers!

4:43 Awww. that's so adorable. The actor playing him was always good at trying to sound cool but in a painfully shy way. That's awsome.

  • @ryuuzaki13215

It's annoying, but I don't mind people expressing their point of view... so will of course leave the comments open.

    Glad you're enjoying them.

  • Hades is my favourite of the Greek gods.

  • @Andragorans I know, in terms of morality, he's rather good compared to Zeus and Posiedon.

  • Where can I buy the series?

  • @hakariri

Nelvana has show zilch interest in selling/marketing it...

  • oh wow! somehow this reminds me of the first serse of x-men

  • @TeaStrawberry

    ...gee, I wonder why.

    (Pssst, read the info box)

  • @ImmortalSynn oh... that's why....

  • it just sucks because in the mythology hades would pursue nymphs.. those bitches! but in the end they will still end up with each other.. =P

  • she didnt run away! she wasnt adventurous her mom kept her right by her side she would not let here alone she was always on her mums lap! hades kidnapped her because zeus gave him consent! so wtf -___- get the myth straight

  • demeter is so salfish she is willing to kill thousands and in a way her child by keeping her lock up and casuing winter

  • This is actually a really cool video! I had to do a assingment for school about Persephone

    Hope there is part two

  • @april304m3i

You do realize that this episode is a 3-part video right? Just making sure.

That, and I hope you don't base your assignment completely on this, as it's HIGHLY modified due to being on a children's show. The classic telling of this myth has quite a few differences.

  • @ImmortalSynn i was a little surprise this was made even thpugh moditfied this myth had to do with incest kiddnapping and the lot

  • @DarkMasterRaven02

I wasn't... this series went out of its way to avoid mentioning familial relations between Olympians, this is IINM the only episode that does.

I was MUCH more surprised that the series took a gay love story (Damon & Pythias) and aired an episode of that one! And they pulled it off quite well.

  • this is one of mt favs i also loved reading about Demeter and the others shame they don't have many tales on Gaia the true Earth Mother.

  • cool like the myth

  • i read this story during com arts

  • I love the greek myths. I think Hades was truly lonely

  • I love how people are basing this off "the rape of persephone" yes she was kidnapped but that was all. the story is neutral and never says if she was happy or not... This myth also can be interpreted as an allegory of ancient Greek marriage rituals. The Classical Greeks felt that marriage was a sort of abduction of the bride by the groom from the bride's family, and this myth may have explained the origins of the marriage ritual. The part of the reason of the seasons was added later.

  • By several accounts, the goddess Macaria was born out of Persephone's shame of being raped...

...perhaps a little more research before you criticize?

  • Macaria

A character in Greek mythology, Macaria, daughter of Heracles, appears in Heracleidae, a play by Euripides. After Heracles's death, King Eurystheus, Heracles's lifelong enemy, sought to capture his children in order to put them to death.

yah.... im not the one who didnt do my research??? I love greek mythology nice try

  • "Try"? LOL, try to do what, cross wits with the likes of you? That certainly wouldn't be very fair of me, now would it.

Had you done more than a 10second Wikipedia search and tried to pass it off as innate knowledge, you'd quickly realize that the Macaria in question was the goddess, not the mortal of the same name. Born of Persephone's sorrow over her rape at the hand of Hades, but encompassing the bliss of Elysium.

Heck, scrolling down on the same wiki page would've shown you that! FAIL.

  • @ImmortalSynn To be fair, there are numerous accounts of the Myths, they're not well known for consistency. I've come across recountings that mention nothing of the rape at all.

  • Helios is the sun god not Apollo. This is a nice cartoon, but the facts are skewed. Persephone was minding her own business and Hades burst out of the ground dragging her back down with him. But then again it is a child's cartoon.

  • You're both right and wrong at the same time.

Helios was the Hellenic sun god, whereas Apollo was seen as a god of light, music, and healing. As the Hellenistic era progressed however, Helios more or less became folded into the aspects of "Phoebus" Apollo, to the point where Apollo more or less usurped his roll. It would stay that way until the cults of Helios were revived in Roman culture, in the worship of Sol.

  • Very interesting! Thanks :)

  • No prob. And yes, your original assertion was correct: the stories here are heavily modified, for the sake of the children's audience (ages 6-12) that they were aimed toward.

  • Also, you can see Helios in the episode "Phaeton & the Chariot of Fire"

  • I'll have to check it out :)

  • Enjoy.

That, and I just realized I wrote "roll" instead of "role"... lol

  • I absolutely love this myth! It's so symbolic, and it's fun to see how people interpret and re-tell it. I'd like to think that Hades didn't actually harm Persephone, and that they found true happiness together :)

  • I'm with ya :)

  • This is actually a very cute take on the myth.

Hades had as much right to be happy as anyone else, right? While it's a much more toned down version of the real myth, it does have the same point to it.

  • thank goodnes! I needed something to help me pass my test!!! U rock i got an A+!!!

  • Well, congrats.

Though be careful... this series heavily modifies some of the myths, in order to make them appropriate for children. So you got lucky here.

  • very true

  • Thanks a lot for sharing. Great job. I do appreciate ur hard work.

  • No prob. Thanks for watching :)

  • Favorite couple from Greek Myth. They DO fall in love....well...after a while...

  • One thing I will give Hades is that despite his methods of getting kore/persephone at least he loved only he unlike the "honorable" Zeus who had affairs with countless women.

  • @chriscohrs actually i dont mean to the "that guy" but hades was pretty permiscuis himself when he was ever in the mood he would hunt down nymphs

  • @chriscohrs actually Hades also had affairs... two of them I believe with Nymphs. Though to be fair the one was started before Persephone with a Nymphe named Minthe who was turned into a mint plant. The other was with a Nymphe that was later turned into a Poplar tree...though I don't know the exact details

Still...he was a lot better than Zeus (who, btw seduced Perse while he was in the form of Hades once. to which i say poor perse, and ew because she was his daughter)

but this is my fav myth:)

  • @TheLeafMaster both nymphs were transformed into plants by persephone out of jelousy

  • Thanks for this episode dude!!!!! Is my fav episode, my fav myth and my fav couple from greek mythology =)

  • Welcome.

You can see a cameo appearance of them in the episode "Psyche & Eros" part 3, as well :)

  • Thanks. I´ll see it^_^

  • The irony of this is, Zeus and Posidon were far more ruthless then Hades, who was just greedy and moody.

  • this is inaccurate

  • hades wasn't a villain or evil, just very sad and twisted. i love this myth, it's my favorite. i like to think of persephone as a symbol of quiet strength in the face of adversity.

  • i know i think zeus is meaner then hadus! he is just....well.... gloomy

  • I like how Hades is Persephone's uncle but is totally macking it to her... Oh, classical mythology!

  • 4:28...is that a caribou? What one of those doing in ancient Greece?

  • No, look at the horns: it's an Irish Elk.

  • hades was actually very sweet to persephone

  • yea i think they are actully a cute couple

  • Hades seems a little...wimpy...doesn't he?

  • In this one... his demeanor changes in other episodes, e.g., "Psyche & Eros" and "Hercules & the Titans: the Last Battle"

  • OMG thakn you so much I loved this show from when I was younger!

  • No prob :)

  • i thought Persephone got caught by Hades by pulling out a bush in the garden.....

  • 4:44 hahahahaha I had no idea Hades was worried about his looks :P

Lol OMG this is so terrible that it's awesome! I'm so gald oyu uploaded this!

  • Is it just me, or does Demeter sound like Peggy Hill XD?

  • 1998 huh? I've never heard of this series before. It came on around the time I discovered toonami and anime.

  • hades and persephone are my favorite couple <333

I kind of wish he didn't really 'rape' her T_T

I read somewhere that Persephone did eventually fall in love with hades

  • In most translations of this myth, Hades never did "rape" Persephone. That was invented by romantic scholars. Yes Persephone did fall in love with Hades and actually did not want to go back until Zeus said that she had to, because of what was happening to the Earth.

  • Pretty much. And thats how the sessions of the Earth took form and Persephone became the goddess of death

  • Persephone never became "the goddess of death", and I believe the word you're looking for is "seasons".

  • Wasnt Demeter the Goddess of season cause how the weather was affected by her emotions. Like how the abesence of her daughter made her sad and that was Autumn and winter...that kind of thing. and since Persehpone is the wife of Hades and he is the God of death/underworld...

  • I would think Persephone was like a goddess of rebirth, or an embodiment of rebirth

  • From the books I read she wanted to go back to her mother. O_o

  • Dude... Hades...that's your niece...

  • ...hell, she was Zeus' niece too, as well as his daughter, lol.

  • yeah..that's really creepy.... buuuut i guess it'd be normal for them.

  • lol Hades look 50 something and Persephone really does look like a teenager.. thx for posting! :D

  • Welcome.

Irony is that in later episodes, they made her look older (e.g., "Psyche & Eros") and slightly changed his wardrobe plus made him look younger ("Hercules & the Titans: the Last Battle).

  • from witch website can i download this series. i'm a huge fan and i want this cartoon for myself. thanks

  • None.

  • like omg i just had a flash back when i was 4 xD tyvm 4 posting this up xD

  • This is sooooo inaccurate its not even funny, its almost retarded how bad this is

  • ...what part of "significantly modified for general audiences" did you fail to grasp?

  • ah ok ^^

  • ma sei italiana, o parli italiano???

  • ...posso parlare appena una piccola quantità di esso ;)

  • bellissima la storia di ade e persefone ^^

  • Sì, uno dei miei racconti favoriti dai Greci ;)

  • Wow lol The little boy that turned into a lizard was actually supposed to be laughing at Demeter e.e They really child-proofed this, huh? But yeah, it's cool to see the myths put into animated format.

  • ...not quite sure what you're trying to say in the opening-statement, but yes, this is probably the most heavily modified/censored episode in the series. Still a fave though :)

  • I realy love this episode since Was a kid.

  • This is probably the most heavily modified re-tellings of the tale (apparently, abduction and rape weren't seen as children's story material, lol) and it's also from the 1st season of the show, where the animation just doesn't compare to the 2nd... but I've decided to include it as there's major "goddage" included (Persephone, Hades, Demeter, Zeus, and cameos by Boreas, and the sexiest of the gods-- Apollo!), I've gotten tons of requests for it, and also-- it's just such a cute little story!

  • That, and Hades is sort of Persephone's uncle too. Oh celestial incest..

  • ...not "sort of", he ~IS~ her Uncle.

That's why this episode is so rare: this series took great care to generally avoid establishing any relationship between the gods, with the exception of mother & child. This episode however depicts Zeus as Demeter's brother, but of course doesn't mention that he's also Persephone's father.

  • zeus had many children and hera didn't

  • LOL thanks so much for posting this episode!!

    I really missed this!

  • ...welcome :)
