  • whats with the thumb sucking .

  • :'-(

    God save Elizabeth I.

  • the finger in the mouth was her way of coping with the pain caused by tooth decay. She died from complications of tooth decay. She had a huge sweet tooth and let's not forget dental hygiene was almost unheard of back then.

  • @PieceBeStill Really? That's interesting. I thought she died of blood cancer (leukemia) which was triggered by her make-up which was poisonous.

  • @gduavitjr - it could be a number of things, no one really knows. But her tooth decay problems were recorded and makes the most sense. It was most likely the cause of her death.

  • So, I'm thinking her finger was in her mouth so she'd keep creating saliva and wouldn't get dry mouth. I could be wrong, but definately a possibility.

  • Gotta love that white lead make up >.>

  • why does she put her finger in the mouth???

  • There needs to be an intervention to take away her makeup kit!

  • We really do not know, but, particularly the king's kids or Queen's are all well planned for history? She is so strong in spirit, standing 14 hours before she died, and she want nobody. :) No doctors. :) While Qin Shi Huang fear death and actively looking for forever life pill. But passed away in 50s. How fun is this. :) She passed by her friends around and bury well, while he passed in mess and even if tomb been built but for his own kids and himself, after he died, his kingdom too. What a joke.

  • y is her finger in her mouth

  • @mz801083 apparently it was to give them a sign that she had died... because the finger would have fallen out of her mouth if she had remained standing

  • Ew. I heard she was beautiful as a young woman.

  • I think henry viii didn't trust elizabeth because he had so much desire to have a son but i understand cos u need a son to pass ur kingdom to.But just look at what a great job her magesty elizabeth the 1 did! anne and henry should be proud of what a lovely daughter they had and of all the good things she did for england.

  • i would like to think that Anne Boleyn would be very proud her daughter had done for England back then.

  • Usually I love the background music, but somehow I now like the falling silence in the end. Seems fitting.

  • Did me lady really do all that?

  • gods, even her hands are powdered.... =Z

  • won't elizabeth's pores get really big because of her face powder 24 hours a day?

  • The finger thing is disgraceful.

  • What's with the finger? I very much doubt the real queen sucked her finger. This is such an undignified portrayal of her.

  • @ladythalia she was very old and like more older people (and I can know that, my grandmother is much worse than this...) she is getting a little, disgraceful because her body and mind are not in the same state as they used to be. My grandmother has no selfasteem nor hygiene left, it are signs that she will not get better...

  • @ladythalia this is very close to what happened if you look it up

  • @ladylake2004 Yes, the writers/producer of this series stuck pretty close to the historical record.

The only detail that this final scene altered was that Elizabeth died in the wee hours of the morning. But since the lighting would have been slight and the number of attendees likely few, for the dramatic touch they opted for a daytime death scene. Checkout the sunlight flooding through the windows in the closing few seconds. Otherwise fairly accurate.

  • God save the queens: Anne & Elizabeth.

  • The finger? done the cycle. Back to BABY

  • Glenda Jackson - brillliant!

  • Why does she keep putting her finger in her mouth?

  • Ann Boleyn must be very proud of her daughter.

  • @ULlNGniBALUGA As Pig as her Father

  • @Amlethusful what made you say she's a pig? Because she made Protestantism in England stable? If she's a pig, how do you call the Pope's of Vatican? Bitter!

  • @Amlethusful As pig as her father but not as pig as the Popes of Rome lol!

  • @Amlethusful At least she reached more than you will ever will. And if she's a pig, look at all these popes of Vatican.

  • @AnoukSiep No call to attack the Catholic Church. We're friends now you know. Elizabeth was a great monarch-anyone with any kind of sense knows it.

  • @faeryquene What is all those calls to defend the rep of a woman/monarch as she was, by default comparison with Vatican, Popes, Rabbis, dalai Lamas? WTF! Were those her only declared enemies? Do that makes her the alternative white Popess? Not even fellow monarchs, females or relatives in the island she respected, or anything else for that matter, as ego maniac as dad. The pity all originated from self-hate and inferiority complex. I do not understand the CULT this woman or her father inspires

  • @Amlethusful How dare you calling her a pig. Elizabeth played a very crucial role in shaping the modern world that we are enjoying right now. I not because of her, history would have been very different. Yes, she was not perfect. She had her flaws and weakness (human as she was) but please take a look of her achievements. Have respect.

  • england's gonna have shortage of face powder then...

  • Creepy!!!!!!

  • Elizabether is always potrayed as having red hair and pale skin, she was a very elegant looking woman. I have the same coloring as Queen Elizabeth.

  • @maleficentdiva Con tacones y pantimedias?

  • Эээ...какое-то не понятное видео...да еще Елизавета с пальцем во рту,с перекрашенным белилами лицом... жуть,одним словом....

  • Yeah thruth but the girl that pays Elizabeth at young age wasn't beatiful neither only the one around he 12 is verry pretty

  • How on earth did Queen Elizabeth get so unattractive. I mean her mother was the beauty Anne Boleyn and her dad King Henry V111 was good looking, what happened?

  • @LadyofCleves65 She died at the age of 69... I imagine not too many people are attractive at that age.

  • @LadyofCleves65 Combination of things I think; old age, possibly smallpox, use of ceruse (poisonous, lead-based skin-whitener). Regarding Henry VIII, I don't think we'll ever know how he really looked in his prime. They SAY he was handsome, but who would have dared say he was ugly?!

  • @CecilyHeron She was also eating very, very little. By contemporary accounts, she never ate a great deal to begin with, but a combination of (well-documented) severe depression and illness (she complained of an "ulcerated throat" that made it difficult for her to swallow shortly after she moved to Richmond) meant less food for strength. She also had to have her coronation ring cut from her finger, because it had become embedded. It's possible there was an infection from that, too.

  • @UileagPPRG I didn't know any of that, that's interesting. Regarding the not eating, she did always have a gauntness about her by the look of her portraits, so it makes sense that she wasn't a big eater. She may have had the stomach "of a king", but I guess a rather petite one! Health complaints like the ulcerated throat are probably treatable now. Same can't be said for severe depression, however.

  • @CecilyHeron Sadly, we can't really go by her portraits to know what she really looked like. There's a belief that the portraits of Elizabeth included elements from her mother, Queen Anne - because Elizabeth was aware that she wasn't the most beautiful of women. The "official" portraits we have that are extant from her lifetime are all variations of an original painting she had done earlier - which included elements from Anne. The pose and dress may be different, but the face is the same.

  • @UileagPPRG Again, v. fascinating! So she probably didn't even do any sittings for portraits for most of her life? Looking at the Boleyn portrait, yes you can see a considerable similarity, I'd never noticed that or known that Elizabeth's wasn't a true likeness. I wonder if somebody's done a morph between the two!?

  • Ahh she looks so friken scarry

  • little man LOL u tell em girl!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How ironic, the very thing she fought against all her life , a Scot taking the throne of England and in her moment of death she knew it would become inevitable. The rest is history.

  • But didn't Elizabeth died young or was it Mary cause this women looks like she's more than 80 years old

  • @brendalizruiz Elizabeth died at 69 years old. Her half-sister Mary was 44 if I am not mistaken.

  • Their last bow to their queen.Respect.

  • They still bow even after her death.Thats loyalty.

  • as to the painted face..it is most probable she was painted like this. she was vain. she had had small pox but recovered. her face most likely was pitted or at least scared to soem degree, so the white powder was used to disguise all the imperfections. after all...she was vain..she wasjealous of mary queen of scots for beiing more beautiful than herself.

  • i've read many books on elizabeth I and she did do the finger in the mouth thing days prior to her death. the explaination as to pointing to an heir is plausable. but she did do it.

  • did she really say "leave us my little snail" ???

  • I HIGHLY doubt her face was painted when she died.

  • @mrlopez2681 its called makeup she had something wrong with her skin

  • didn't the lead in the face make up they used in those days have an affect on her mental state? oh yeah, maybe her death!

  • The sighing that Glenda Jackson does throughout the death scene is quite accurate. Elizabeth was believed to have grown depressed and melancholy during her last weeks of life, and simply lost the will to go on. This in turn broke down whatever bodily defenses she had left at her advanced age, allowing what historians believe was pneumonia to set in.

  • wow why was she so pale? scary

  • @mevc500 Haha, it was a sign of wealth back in the days. Only poor people who needed to work outside got a taint. The Queen here used make-up to artificially enhance her white skin - obviously! ;)

  • Why does she keep putting her finger in her mouth?

  • @SamhainTheDark A person who was there wrote that she first stood and then would only sit on a pile of cushions, neither eating nor sleeping, with the tip of her forefinger in her mouth. She was very anxious. They only managed to get her into bed when she collapsed and it took days. I doubt she was anywhere near as chatty as they show her here. I have been at many deaths (I do hospice) and the account seems believable even if this drama doesn't.

  • @nokomarie1963 Okay. ... But why does she do it?

  • @SamhainTheDark Well, the actress does it to satisfy the part. Elizabeth might have done it for a couple of reasons. First of all, your forefinger is one of the most nerve-intensive points on the body and she may have done it to keep herself awake. That and she had bad teeth, did the pressure relieve her gums? I go with the former, she wanted to stay awake and could not give up. Think about how long and how hard she fought for power. And all to give it to that twit James.

  • @nokomarie1963 Well, I wouldn't say "twit," per se. I mean, he shaped Christianity into what it is today and he may or may not have been the most hypocritical bastard in Christian history. What with the rumors that he was gay and commissioned a bible that condemns homosexuality.

  • @SamhainTheDark King James I of the Bible fame? I say "twit" for two reasons. First of all, because he attempted to enforce a view of Religion which he could not support by any political means. He was a Catholic and there were some stupid Catholic plots and so he became the epicenter of Protestantism.

Also, unlike Elizabeth I he let on to his sexuality. Always a bad move. Never let them see you sweat.

He may have been earnest and well-educated but a twit nonetheless.

  • @nokomarie1963 Hun, I was being sarcastic.

  • @SamhainTheDark

James was indeed gay, but as a Greek Orthodox Christian, I do not agree that he or Protestantism in general would come to shape Christianity. Orthodox and Catholic Christians have clung more steadfastly to their traditions while Protestantism has disintegrated into either left wing, politically correct sects with vastly declining members OR crazy evangelical cults. By the way, James was never Catholic, but was raised Protestant after his mother Mary Stuart fled Scotland.

  • @spartacus3ful No, James believed that since God made him king he could pretty much do as he pleased without fear of repercussion.

  • @SamhainTheDark

Right, the so called Divine Right Of Kings, a Protestant concoction to justify any actions on the part of monarchs, even the most cardinal of sins.

  • @spartacus3ful Yes, that one.

  • wats with sucking of the fingers beth! hehe lol taste good?? hehe

  • yes, she realy look like clown.

  • she wore layers of heavy pancake cosmetics which were made using lead to cover the unsightly scars on her face from when she had smallpox.

  • she looks like a clown

  • Last Boleyn? Last of Henry's grandchildren?

    Many theories; many mysteries.

    My ancestors?

Mary 'Rose' Tudor; Sir Charles Brandon; Henry VIII Tudor; Anne Boleyn; Mary Boleyn; Mary Berkeley

Sir John Perrot; Sybil Johnes; Mary Katherine Carey; Queen Elizabeth I; Sir Robert Dudley

Sir Robert Devereux; Bishop Stephan Gardiner; Sir Thomas Howard; Sir Edward DeVere; Mary Sidney Herbert; Sir Philip Sidney; Lettyce Knollys

Queen Elizabeth--Sir Robert Dudley: do you believe they had children together?

  • I viewed this Masterpiece Theatre production as a kid with my mother as history teacher and it was one of the best times of my young education. Glenda Jackson is Superb!

  • The last Boleyn :(

  • @ThexXECAXx not true marry had i think 3 children and one by the king

  • @blah8790 oh rite, cool:)

  • why does she keep putting her finger in her mouth then dies don't make sense?

  • @army7989 she used to do that many times..!

  • @QueenAnneBoleyn1536 oh ok lol i was watching the clip and i just could not understand it it was like when she did that it was fatal lol

  • omg that was so emotional i actually have a tear rolling down my cheek

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!she looks scary...seduced by her stepfather????lead killed her??

  • seduced by her stepfather????lead killed her??

  • seduced by her stepfather????lead killed her??she had less hair on the top...

  • seduced by her stepfather????lead killed her??

  • seduced by her stepfather????

  • I believe early in her reign she said words to the effect of "God may have given me the body of a woman, but he gave me the heart and stomache of a man". I think even her enemies had to grudgingly repect her. A real Queen.

  • What was the cause of her death?

  • @MarinaMaxwellYuy Supposedly lead poisoning. The make up that the pple wore of that time was called ceruse. It would make the skin whiter. Unfortunately, it contained lead. Very poisonous.

  • @DuttyGyal718 Thank you for answering me. Poor Elizabeth, such an horrible death!

  • @MarinaMaxwellYuy horrible indeed but at least she was surrounded by the people that love her the most :)

  • @MitchieTorres93 That's good to hear. She hasn't been Queen in my country ( France) but I must admit she was a strong woman, worthy of respect.

  • @DuttyGyal718 she actually died of blood poisoning because she had an abscess in her throat and it burst and all the puss went into her blood stream :S plus old age :/

  • @MarinaMaxwellYuy I'm pretty sure it was just natural causes.

  • @daniellover201 It could be also that, she was old.

  • @MarinaMaxwellYuy Thats what natural causes is. Old Age, Diseases, etc. etc. (:

  • I have to wonder how much pain she was probably in. And all the time she's fighting that peace that death can bring for fear of what will become of her kingdom. The stress from the fighting and fear would worsen the pain...

  • she looks so scary!! Like gary oldman in dracula xDD

  • she looks like someone tried to bake a cake on her.

  • @jennifersheelah. That's what she did in her last moments was stand for hours and put her finger in her mouth. I think I would have to guess is that she was afraid of dying and leaving her country not knowing what would become of it after her death.

  • what was the point of putting her finger in her mouth? just wondering.

  • @jennifersheelah

Probably fantasizing about going down on Leicester or Essex.

  • @jennifersheelah

    She was losing it, yo!

  • @jennifersheelah she used to do that many times..

  • parece trasvesty o dragqueen jajajajajajaja

  • bitch

  • didnt she get her head cut off

  • @shannonfunny no that was mary queen of scots but at first i thought she got her head chopped of as well

  • I admire Elizabeth for her courage and no fear of death in her final hours but damn her bastard father

  • She led England forward marching with the troops. She is married to England so to satisfy England. A proud English queen, arrogant and greedy that none will stand before her desires towards England. She is the reason for the language we speak ENGLISH.

  • @georgebiju6

A country that would have been nowhere, along with the rest of Europe and all of Western civilization were it not for Greece, particularly the 300 Spartans who prevented Eastern culture from its campaign of obliteration. Give us back the Elgin Marbles, you pirates.

  • She led England forward marching with the troops. She is married to England so to satisfy England. A proud English queen, arrogant and greedy that none will stand before her desires towards England.

  • I heard that Elizabeth used to plaster her face with white make-up in order to look like a statue. Does anyone know if this is true? What other earthly purpose would one have for doing this? It wasn't the style of the time to paint oneself white, or was it?

  • @Rayarena she would use a paste like mixture that had lead in it. it was white. white was the colour of virginity. it was also fashionable in the elizabethan times for women to have ginger or red hair and pale faces. Elizabeth probably died of lead poisoning

  • @xxdinzzixx Imagine that! Vanity killed Queen Elizabeth! That said, she really over did it a bit, didn't she? I mean, she really caked on that make-up, more so than anyone else I have seen in any of these historical productions [if we are to take these historical productions as accurate which I believe that they are]. In any case, thank you for the fascinating information!

  • @Rayarena she would use it to cover up the small pox'z scares that she had on her face. She was such an amazing woman and she fascinates me greatly. And no problem.

  • @xxdinzzixx

Personally, she would have looked far less ridiculous had she not worn the cake makeup, the rouge and the big red wig that collectively made her look like Bozo the Clown. There were ways of looking regal in one's natural elderly state, even at that time.

  • @ligreekguy Back then, it was virtually impossible (to look regal when you were in your 70s, E was around 78 at that time)unless you never used makeup, which had lead in it, or if you were a freak of nature.

  • Comment removed

  • That make up was very dangerous for the skin

  • "leave us my little snare" :) ohhh I love Elizabeth!

  • "Little man, must is a word not used for princes"- Queen Elizabeth I

  • What a terrible make up.

    JK.

  • Why was she keeping her finger in her mouth???????? please if anybody knows the answer to this message me!

  • @Justinsupermagic I think it was to signify when she was dead. When you die, you go limp. Her finger would fall from her mouth, so they could tell that she was dead.

  • @Justinsupermagic I think it's to show when she has died. It'll fall from her mouth sort of thing. I don't really know, it's kind of gross.

  • @Justinsupermagic This actually happened in real life. I don't know why. Maybe it's because she lost her speech. Who knows.

  • @Justinsupermagic Your answer to the question (one year ago) ..."Why her finger in her mouth...?

Probably because a finger was used to point at her future heir. Her counselors were pressuring her to give the name of her future heir and she refused to designate him and she therefore remained pointing at herself in a state of semi- conscious small talk. This is one of these kind of scenes that makes this film unique. I am not sure wether this actually happened though.

  • "not so fast my lord!"

  • wow i think they used a lil to much makeup on the actor

  • @leramay That is how they wore makeup in that time period.

The white make up actually had lead in it.

  • The ending is so haunting...it's as if we're watching the setting of the sun.

  • bloody Elizabeth, she was smart to not marry.

  • It's been suspected that she puts her finger in her mouth due to pains caused by tooth decay. She had a huge sweet tooth and dental hygiene was almost nonexistent back then!

  • Powerful scene of life and death of a well lived and loved woman, the feeling of loss was maginificently achieved.

    EXCELLENT.

  • I love her wit!!!!

  • what a powerful Queen . i agree that she gave the England greatest monarch i

  • @melvinmasters92 I agree

  • Rest in Heaven Elizabeth!

  • What is all that background noise? It´s like a wild microphone was loose, footsteps, figiting, what the hell was going on?

What kind of death scene was that?

  • Why does she put her finger in her mouth ?

  • I believe it was because she was too tired to speak. So she kept her finger in her mouth so they would know when she had died. :)

  • she used to sleep with her finger in her mouth.

  • Brilliant series about England's greatest and most fascinating monarch- thanks!

  • I agree. Poor thing. But she held her head high and took care of the country she inherited the best she could. She did it most royaly. I hope that in death she found some small bit of peace in her choatic life...

God Rest your Soul Your Majesty!!

  • why is it she is very white?

  • Earlier in her reign Elizabeth was attacked by small pox, which leaves permanet scars where the pox were. Elizabeth had many on her face and scalp (and went partly bald because of it) and that plus age, she covered her face in a paste of vinegar, lemon juice, and white lead...this concotion was poisonous (and turned the skin a gray color). Though I don't think it was a direct cause of her death.

  • tnx . . but did she really died while thumb sucking?

  • search for 'Elizabeth I THC Part 21' on YouTube it has a very informative briefing of her death and last hours. (But to quickly answer your question, no she didn't die like that.)

  • by the way she is related on her mother's side anne boleyn so she is not related to

    king henry 8th.

  • my great great great great great great great great great great great grandmother

louise de burgh was 6th cousin of elizabeth 1st, and her uncle james crawford was burnt at the stake by queen mary.

  • "No doctors, I wish to die in peace."

Despite the seriousness of the scene, I had to laugh at that. Even in her last moments, her sense of humor shone through.

  • "No doctors I wish to die in peace" hOw is that humorous? she made a plain statement; she wishes to die in peace

  • To me it was.

  • LOL...I see what you mean. It's good that she made that little jibe at herself. She hasn't had very much peace in her life since her mother died, let alone when she was conceived and born.I think she was sure that even in death, she'd have one last bit of chaos to deal with.

  • Let's see:

    being called a bastard child,

    seduced by her stepfather

cast aside when her brother was born

thrown into the tower and threatened with execution, because your own half sister believes you to be plotting against her

ascend the throne, only to inherit a country that's nearly bankrupt (I think)

having to deal with Catholic enemies who would love to see you dead

having to deal with a cousin who wants to take your throne, thus leading you to execute her

    spanish armada

  • all that and probabaly tons more, no wonder she wants to die in peace. In her life time, it was probabaly anything but peaceful.

  • LOL...Exactly! Poor Woman...Bless her Royal Heart!
